Par DAVIS OLIVER. 'For many years the violinist Kerenza Peacock and I have been discussing the concept of a piece about trees. One day I received in the post from her a book by Annie Davidson entitled, ‘How to be More Tree’. This brilliant book became the inspiration for the Arboretum Suite. The first tree I decided to write about was Aspen. I read that Aspen trees work together sharing water and nutrients through their root system, so only as a community can they grow in strength. Aspen is followed by Açai Palm, a tree which is native to Brazil and Argentina, hence the Latin American feel of this movement. The score is marked pizzicato, the plucked sound further accentuating the South American rhythms. The Vanishing Mahogany of the Amazon naturally has a very sombre feel, although the major key ending of this movement reflects the hope that we may still manage to save the rain forests. The last movement describes my response to the description of the Mountain Hemlock. The Cantabile in D major for violin and piano (M.S. 109) is one of Paganini's most popular and famous compositions. This brief piece - a short tripartite 'aria variata' - is particularly spontaneous and lighthearted, reminiscent of the lyrical nature of the Italian bel canto tradition. It has an intimate feel to it, bringing us closer to this composer from Genoa.The main aim of this critical edition, based on the autograph source held at the Casanatense Library in Rome and collated with all the key printed editions, is to provide both performers and scholars with a text containing a philologically authoritative original reading. / Violon Et Piano

Although one of Ireland's earliest published works, his Berceuse for violin and piano of 1902 displays the exemplary grace of salon music at its most sophisticated. The finely crafted melody wears lightly the elegance of the genre, as perfectly expressed in Elgar's Chanson de Matin and Salut d'Amour. In the accompaniment, details of harmony suggest the influence of Tchaikovsky and a passionate utterance more typically Russian than English. Liberated by the innovations of Debussy and Ravel, Ireland in his later songs and piano solos would recreate this quality on his own terms - but the essence of his uniquely romantic voice feels already embryonically present in this exquisite Edwardian miniature./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano
