Arnold wrote this compact
sonatina in 1951 and it
has since become one of
his most popular
instrumental works. As
always with Arnold, it is
impeccably crafted: the
first movement, with it's
wide leaps, the
occasional incursion of a
six-eight bar into the
prevailing four-four, and
the lightest of jazzy
touches, lives up to its
marking of Allegro con
brio; while the second
demonstates Arnold's love
at this period of a
gentle cantabile style
where no shadows yet
lurk. The finale is a
wild dance in three-four
time marked Furioso, and
it is a distant cousin of
the Czech Furiant. With
its vigorous rhythms and
cascading semiquavers, it
has something of the
open-air quality of
Dvorak at his most
buccolic - not a frequent
influence on Malcolm
Arnold, but a highly
appropriate one in this
charming (and
challenging) little work.
This version for clarinet
solo with wind band has
been arranged by
saxophone player Alex
Steurs.

Tchaikovsky was initially
euphoric, then severe
self-doubts befell him
after he conducted the
premiere in St.
Petersburg. These doubts
demonstrably led him to
make interpretative
changes for the Hamburg
performance in 1889,
including a cut in the
finale. Only with the
extremely positive
response to this
performance did his
doubts dispel.
Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky
himself never again
conducted the 5th
symphony. It was only
posthumously established
in the repertoire through
Arthur Nikisch's
commitment. The new
edition's textual
criticism takes into
account besides the
autograph and first
edition also the first
edition's orchestral
parts, together with the
piano arrangement
produced from the
autograph by Sergei
Taneyev. In addition to
thoroughly clarifying
dynamics and
articulation, the source
comparison also corrected
many errors and solved
problematical passages,
such as, for instance,
the trombone entry in m.
372 of the finale.
Considered, moreover, for
the first time has been
the composer's doubts
about his work and its
ambiguities, frequently
successfully suppressed
in the history of its
performance and
reception. Tchaikovsky's
conductor's copy is
unfortunately lost, hence
his alterations made for

taking up these studies,
he willdoubtless be
fatigued, especially at
the outset, by those
numbers requiring an
unusual length ofbreath.
However, through careful
study and experience he
will learn to overcome
the difficultiesand will
acquire the resources
which will enable him to
master this particular
phase of playingwith
ease. As a means to this
end, attention is drawn
to cantabile passages in
particular, whichshould
be played with the utmost
expression, yet at the
same time with as much
modified toneas possible.
On the cornet, as with
the voice, clear tones
may be obtained by
widening thelips and
veiled tones by
contracting them. This
happy circumstance allows
the performer
anopportunity to rest
while still continuing to
play, and at the same
time enables him to
introduceeffective
contrasts into the
execution. It should be
noted that by little
artifices of this kind,
andby skillfully
conserving his resources,
the player will reach the
