profession of flutist at
La Scala, where I also
had the opportunity to
perform ballet. The
transcription traces the
salient moments of the
plot, highlighted by the
captions taken from the
original score. Free of
virtuosity, so
appreciated by the
flutists, it is conceived
with the intention of
restoring the
dramaturgical tension of
the Fellini-Rota

The Suite on
Galician songs was
written in 1899 and
debuted on 31 October
that same year, as part
of a series of concerts
organised by the
Philharmonic Society of
Barcelona at the Teatro
Lirico, under the
direction of Joan Lamote
de Grignon.
The
work is made up of four
movements: I. Canto de la
manana (‘Morning
song'), also known as En
la montana (‘In the
mountains'), II. Danza
Scherzo (Galician folk
dance), III. Morrina
(‘Homesickness')
and IV. La Fiesta
(finale). The entire
composition is laced with
Galician folk melodies,
which serve as the
pretext for developing a
piece that is entirely
descriptive and scenic in
nature, by means of a
meticulous and precise
orchestration of great
technical and folkloric
interest. The work
reveals not only
Granados' great technical
expertise as
orchestrator, but also
his imagination and
intelligence when
recreating the most
distinctive sounds of
traditional Galician folk
music. He achieves this
effect through a
masterful use of
instrumentation and
experimentation
throughout the 23 minute
duration of this
magnificent suite.

on May 22, 1813, at the
Teatro San Benedetto in
Venice, L'italiana in
Algeri (The Italian Girl
in Algiers) by Gioachino
Rossini (1792-1868) was a
success, with subsequent
performances in Vicenza,
Milan, and Naples. It was
later performed at His
Majesty's Theatre in
London in 1819, and again
in New York in 1832.
Rossini's mixture of
opera seria and opera
buffa is notable —
L'italiana in Algeri
tells the tale of
Isabella, an Italian girl
who uses her wiles to
trick unwitting Mustafà,
the Bey of Algiers, into
freeing her and her
lover, Lindoro from his
palace. The opera itself
fell somewhat out of
favor in the 19th century
but has been revived
frequently since World
War II with many
successful productions.
The sorrowful cavatina
Cruda sorte! Amor
Tiranno! takes place in
Act I, and serves as the
introductory aria of
Isabella, who finds
herself shipwrecked in
Algiers. The aria is
preceded by the chorus
Quanto Roba!

is based on stock
characters from the
Italian commedia
dellâarte tradition.
Columbina has a choice of
partner â Pierrot,
or Harlequin? Or maybe
she will select neither
of them. In this set of
triple variations,
Pierrot and Harlequin
compete for Columbina's
attention and favour.
Pierrot is deep, quiet,
thoughtful, and loving,
but sometimes
melancholic. Harlequin is
light-hearted, extrovert,
and fun to be with, but
somewhat shallow and
brash. Columbina herself
is coquettish, impulsive,
and unpredictable. How
will the story end
between these imperfect
characters? The performer
gets to select one of
three possible endings as
the piece nears its
conclusion. Pierrot,
or Harlequin? was
commissioned by the
International Guitar
Festival Homenaje 2023.
The premiere was given by
Giacomo Susani at Barco
Teatro, Padova, Italy, on
10th November
2023.

Organ
This
publication gathers
together in these three
pieces the only
compositions by Santucci
devoted to the harp, both
as a solo instrument and
in dialogue with the
organ, his favourite
instrument. The little
Melodia per arpa,
a simple piece having an
apparently didactic
purpose, does not show
the date of composition
but, judging by the
handwriting of the
manuscript, it probably
dates back to the period
between 1980 and 1990. No
other information has
reached us as to why the
piece was
composed. The two
pieces Alleluja Modo
II and Wachet
auf, both dated 20
March 1993, composed for
the unusual duo of harp
and organ, are dedicated
to Anna Maria Restani,
first harp in the
orchestra of the Teatro
Comunale of Bologna from
1965 to 2002, and to her
son Wladimir Matesic,
organist and now teacher
at the Conservatoire in
Trieste. Gregorian chant
is the protagonist of the
first piece, evoking a
Gothic and rarefied
atmosphere. The second is
instead a blatant tribute
to Johann Sebastian Bach
(right from the first
bars the reference to
Prelude no. 1 of the
Well-Tempered
Clavier is clear),
through one of his most
famous chorales
(Wachet auf, ruft uns
die stimme), also
used by Santucci for
numerous other
compositions, including
Il corteo dei Magi
[for trumpet, organ,
orchestra and choir,
1986, ms.], still
performed in the
Christmas concerts in

23rd, 2013 at the Teatro
Municipal de
Niterói (Rio de
Janeiro) by the musicians
of the Omega Quartet:
Maurício Silva,
Deusiel da Cunha de
Souza, Diego Abreu and
Mateus Falkemback (bass
clarinet). Approxima
tely 9 minutes in length,
the title ' Yellow Green
' is a tribute to the two
colours of the Brazilian
flag. The introduction
gives way to a vast Fugue
(marked Vivace) dipped in
the colours of swing. The
central Adagio floats a
dreamy, timeless melody.
The brief finale brings
together the fugue's
thematic material with
one last recommendation
for the performers: 'Feel
jazz'. This invigorating
work was recorded for the
Chant de Linos label by
its dedicatees, the Omega
Quartet
clarinetists.&rdquo.
