collection of 10 Polish
Folk Songs on Soldier
Themes by Witold
Lutoslawski, originally
intended for male choir a
cappella, was written in
1951. The score was
published that same year
by the Ministry of
Defence Publishers in the
series Biblioteka

Polskiego no. 31. Some of
the songs (numbers 4, 5,
6) were also published by
PWM Edition in Krakow
(1945) in the collection
Pod jaworem (Under the

selection of Polish folk

Polish Folk Songs...
together with the 1951
cycle of four songs
(Wyszlabym ja, Sluzba
Polsce, Zelazny marsz and
Naprzod idziemy) and the
nine-bar Lord Tennyson
Song written many years
later (as an occasional
gift for Robin Boyle) are
the only songs written
for a cappella choir by
Witold Lutoslawski.

cappella motet Alleluja
(2018) is a song of
longing which resonates
existential need as well
as the hope of a profound
connection to God. In the
beginning, which is
delicate and motivically
very concentrated but
metrically deliberately
uncoordinated, more and
more voices gather to
sing together, until
suddenly, starting from
the bass, a violent and
rhythmically exalted
incantation breaks out.
The following fortissimo
unison in a high register
is the climax of the
entire work piece. In the
Abgesang, the beginning
is taken up, but now in a
polyphonic and
harmonically intensified
setting. The end in A
major seems like a
salvation. The work has
been released on the CD

internationally
best-known and most
frequently performed work
by Gabriel Faure . The
composer's first version
was limited to just five
movements and small-scale
forces with low strings,
harp and organ. The work
was then expanded several
times culminating in the
version for large
orchestra of 1900. This
orchestral version forms
the basis of this
edition.
Despite
its comparatively long
period of gestation, the
Requiem forms a stylistic
unity. Unlike other
requiem settings, the
composer foregoes any
theatrical gestures in
this work. A restrained
dynamic range together
with graceful melodic
writing for both soloists
and choir give the work a
gentle and optimistic
character.
The
choral score just as the
vocal score are based on

his chamber and
orchestral works, also
composed much for the
organ, having himself
been appointed organist
at both Saint Merri
(1853-1857) and Madeleine
(1857-1877), the latter
post he held for 20
years. He is one of the
19th century's most
important composers and
performers for the organ,
counted together with
other greats such as
Gigout, Guilmant, and
Widor. Saint-Saëns wrote
the FANTAISIE No. 3 in C,
Op. 157 for organ in
1919.
