Schumann's
horn sonatas were
composed in 1936/37.
Considering the slim
repertoire offered horn
players from this period,
it is more than
surprising that these two
masterpieces could have
slumbered for so long.
Both sonatas are similar
in structure, with op.
118 being one Schumann's
few three-movement
sonatas. The first
movements of the pieces
sparkle with
melancholically lyrical
melodies, whereas
passages strongly marked
rhythmically, variously
shape the two outer
movements. Virtuoso
moments can be found,
respectively, in the
final movements, bringing
the works to a brilliant
close. The horn parts
predominantly range
within the full, sonorous
middle register, where
occasional outbursts up
to the notated a flat''
are also not lacking. The
clever handling of the
balance of sounds, the
possibilities on the
early valve horn as well
as the inner interweaving
of themes differentiating
horn and piano make the
sonatas an exceedingly
vivid testimony to
Schumann's mature
compositional
art.
Schumann's

each horn player's

When Ludwig
van Beethoven wrote the
present two works around
1800, the Romance as a
genre designation for a
soulful, melodious
instrumental piece was
anything but established,
despite the occasional
piece bearing this title.
Beethoven himself named
the pieces Romance in the
autographs, but offered
them to Breitkopf &
Hartel for publication as
Solo. His brother Karl
even spoke of 2 Adagios
to the publisher.

Choosing an
edition of this
celebrated violoncello
concerto has always posed
a dilemma: they were
based either on the first
edition, which was not
given a final
authorization by Dvorak,
or solely on the
autograph, which does not
represent the final
version in many
instances. This was the
case with the Dvorak
Complete Edition of 1955,
for example. Klaus Doge
has critically
re-examined all the
surviving sources. His
research has yielded a
new, text-critical
edition that meticulously
evaluates the many, often
contradictory readings
that create discrepancies
between the autograph and
the first edition. In the
conclusions he draws for
performance practice,
Doge generally gives
priority to the first
edition. However, he does
not smooth out Dvorak's
special notation, such as
Dvorak's publisher
Simrock did in his day.
Doge's edition also shows
that the musical text is
not as authenticated as
has been suggested by
previous editions.
Variants have
occasionally been notated
on a second staff at
several passages,
particularly in the solo
part. The piano
reduction, which was
prepared by the composer
himself, has been edited
according to
text-critical criteria
for the first time as
well. Doge was able to
rely on a renowned
performer for this part
of his work: Heinrich
Schiff, who arranged the
solo part and provides
valuable interpretative
tips in his commentaries
on performance
practice.

world of African American
folk songs. 30 gospels

There are
people who are capable of
planning well. They live
their lives in a
well-structured manner
and know exactly what
they have to do. On the
other hand, there are
also people who are the
exact opposite: they want
to do too many things at
once and are often
somewhat absent-minded,
which occasionally
results in frantic
situations. The outcome
of one such situation is
‘They are
coming’. John
Emerson Blackstone had
been working on a new
composition for some time
when he received a
telephone call from his
editor, who told him that
the deadline was
approaching rapidly, even
worse, that it would
expire at the end of that
same day and that he
would drop by in person
to fetch thecomposition!
Blackstone set to
work in a frenzy and
completed the last
details. When his editor
arrived, the piece was
finished ..... and got
its definitive title:
‘They are coming’.

Despite a
strong vocation for the
cello, which he studied
and began to play with a
distinctive character,
Pau Casals, like most
ambitious, creative
musicians, wrote at the
piano and for the piano,
as it is the ultimate
teaching instrument,
summarising the full
vision of the creative
process. Any creative
musician habitually
worked at the piano,
whether for this
instrument alone or for
piano accompanied by
other solo instruments.
To date, it has not been
possible to document
whether Casals had
systematic training on
this instrument, although
at that time it was more
common than it is today
because, considering its
qualities of timbre and
combination, it was
particularly attractive
for creating test pieces
and different kinds of
compositions.
Th
e piano works contained
in this second volume
include part of the salon
repertoire, a
continuation of the first
volume, and four sardanas
for piano of diverse
origin: some are
reductions of more
complex forms and others
sketches for instrumental
groups. In the first
group, some works
intended for children are
published, a
demonstration of the
tenderness the
‘cellist felt for
the children of his
closest friends. In the
second case, the sardanas
are works from his first
exile in Prada and show
the nostalgia of the
composer, away from his
country against his
will.
In
general, the works are
not especially complex;
their purpose and nature
are diverse. They come in
the context of salon
music, with the
appearance of creative
entertainments
characterised by a
basically tonal,
transparent language with
a widespread tendency to
modulate to nearby keys
more as a momentary
expressive resource than
as a structural
evolutionary procedure.
They show a lack of
systematic work on the
instrument as well as the
commonplaces of piano
composition of their
time. In some of these
works, the piano thread
breaks, the works do not
have the thrust of
finished products; the
occasional appearance of
chords that are difficult
or impossible to finger
leads us to think of
intentions closer to test
pieces than to products
intended for normal
performance. But not all
these piano works are
circumstantial. There is
also a prelude and a
minuet of a certain piano
writing complexity.
