'Mors et vita' - death and life. This antithesis opens a stanza of the ancient 11th-century Easter sequence 'Victimae paschali laudes', where life and death are locked in mutual struggle. Zsigmond Szathmary's 12-minute composition of 2015, commissioned for the Freiburg Minster, interprets this primal human experience with mighty explosions of sound. Here the organ can show what it's capable of: its grandeur and strength are fully exploited, but not at the expense of soft and gentle contrasts. Typical of Szathmary's compositional style is the alternation of seemingly improvised, recitative-like writing and passages in strict rhythm. Time and again the composer takes up elements from the church hymn 'Christ ist erstanden von der Marter alle' (Christ the Lord is risen again). / Orgue

Our Krebs is known to have been one of the best pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach, consequently we made a play on words: In this great Bach [brook] only one single Krebs [crayfish] has been caught. In his organ compositions Krebs was essentially a follower of Bach, while in his clavier and chamber music the change of musical styles which occurred about 1750 is clearly evident. Characteristic of the pre-classical period is the juxtaposition and blending of old and new stylistic elements. Thus the music of Krebs represents the new courtly and sensitive spirit of that era. French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Study of the Fugue is an excellent introduction to the important technique. The book is in two parts, the secondgiving focus to elements such as the subject, the coda, modulations, the pedal, and structure, amongst other aspects. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes forpiano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory.
