Bac

Jesus schlaft, was soll
ich hoffen [Jesus sleeps,
what hope have I] BWV 81
for the fourth Epiphany
Sunday, 1724. The cantata
is structured as a little
drama: In the beginning,
fear prevails. The seas
rage and Jesus is asleep.
The threateningly foaming
waves are vividly
depicted in the soughing
string accompaniment of
the tenor aria. Jesus's
words Ihr Kleinglaubigen,
warum seid ihr so
furchtsam? [You of little
faith, why are you so
fearful?] are set as a
bass arioso at the center
of the cantata; they
provide the turning
point. In the subsequent
bass aria, the towering
seas are silenced. A
recitative - Wohl mir

into the closing chorale
with its certainty Unter

Kyle
Pederson's gift for
songwriting is on full
display in this heartfelt
prayer for peace. Folk
and classical styles
blend seamlessly as the
choir both asks for
shalom, then offers
shalom to the listener,
to friends and family, to
those we don't know, and
even to our enemies:
...heal us all that we
may know the wholeness of
your great shalom..

Maï
by Ryo Noda, a
Japanese composer, is a
unique piece of work for
solo saxophone that is
strongly influenced by
Japanese music. With some
sonority supposed to be
quite close to those of a
koto and of a shakuhachi,
this piece is very
technical and complex to
play.
The story
behind this work is about
the ghost of a Japanese
Samurai. While his wife
asks why he let her
behind and left to fight
in the war, he tries to
justify his choices. Most
of the work depicts the
struggle within the mind
of the Samurai, between
ending his life and
living in the end of his
enemies. The screaming
altissimo at the end is
the climax of his
struggle which then
followed by a 10 second
silence that represents
his death. The technical
abilities required are:
large interval leaps,
rapid trills, alternate
fingerings to achieve
pitch bending,
multiphonics, altissimo,
portamento and cutting
tone.

treble) The dramaturgical
constellation of the
subject forced me to use
multifaceted and
stylistic means. I have
used melodic segments
from the Farinelli arias
that are still extant
today, as well as other
Baroque vocal and formal
elements, models inspired
by the Singspiel and the
musical, and even a rap
piece over a techno
rhythm. The musical
center of the opera
consists of song and the
human voice. Farinelli is
a bel canto opera.
(Siegfried Matthus) Carlo
Broschi, known as
Farinelli, was the
brightest star among the
castrato tenors of the
18th century. Handels
enemies brought him to
London so that he could
outshine Handels singers.
Here, Matthus depicts
Farinelli at the Spanish
court, ruled by the
pathologically melancholy
King Philip V. In a
review of his life, we
relive important stages
in the career of the
singer, who lived outside
of the norm and found his
home in the fascinating
twilight world between
art and
artificiality.

Beginning
in the 1950s, the CIA
became very interested in
psychological research
beingconducted on the
effects of sensory
deprivation on humans.
The research, that
suggestedrapid regression
in those tested, provided
a framework for sections
of what would later
beknown as the KUBARK
manual, the first a
series of US-government
documents thatprovided
techniques for
interrogating detainees.
These methods involved
radicallyaltering a
detainee’s sense
of time and
environment.Among these
techniques, some
developed independently
of the manuals by
interrogators,were the
manipulation of light and
sound. In order to weaken
the resolve of a
detaineeand prolong
“capture
shock,†complete
sensory deprivation
followed by blasts of
light ornoise, or very
loud music, proved
effective. So much so
that variations and
combinationsof these
techniques were widely
used by the United States
as well as both its
allies andenemies in
Vietnam, Latin America,
Northern Ireland, and the
Middle East.Though the
idea of sound as a weapon
is at least as old as the
account of
Joshua’s siegeof
Jericho, it was only
recently deemed
“inhuman and
degrading†for the
purposes ofinterrogation
by the European Court of
Human Rights in the 1978

notes are always to be
played as fast as
possible. Each grace note
in a group should be of
the same duration.
Gracenotes curtail the
