At funeral
or memorial services and
ceremonies, the
traditional, slowly
marching funeral music,
the Tombeau, still plays
an important musical role
today. In most cases,
such musics were created
for a specific occasion,
like the death of a
prince or an artist. That
was the case with this
Tombeau for wind
orchestra, too: Bertold
Hummel wrote it after the
death of a fellow
composer and
friend.Hummel was not
afraid of expressing his
feelings in a wistfully
nostalgic funeral music
full of tonal beauty
which is close to the
musical language of the
19th century with regard
to form and harmony.In
addition to the score and
parts, our edition of
this moving piece also
contains the particell
with which Hummel put
down the Tombeau on paper
in 1998.

Between Walls
is a group of songs on
the poems of William
Carlos Williams for
soprano voice, soprano
saxophone and piano.
Within each movement, the
music helps describe the
text or set the mood of
each of the movements.
The first movement,
Between Walls, is solemn,
without joy or humor,
quiet in nature and
thoughtful. In the text,
where nothing will grow,
the last pitch on grow is
much higher than the
previous pitches, as if
it were to grow. The
soprano and the saxophone
are unison on In which
and then move apart a
step and a third on shine
the ending with a
dissonant minor 2nd on
the word broken, playing
upon the text. Young
Woman at a Window is for
soprano and piano alone.
This movement is also
quite dissonant and the
piano sustains that
tonality by using pedal
through out. The soprano
sings in the lower
tessitura while the piano
moves slowly between
major thirds and minor
seconds to minor thirds
and tritones to the end
of the piece, suggesting
the sadness of the women,
with tears on her cheeks.
The listener is left to
wonder what she and the
child are looking at. The
Nightingales is a
contrast to the first two
movements. The tonality
is more consonant,
lyrical in the saxophone
line and arpeggiated
chords sustained with
pedal throughout most of
the piano line, promoting
a poetic and expressive
premise. In The Thing,
the lines move more
independently and do not
come together as one
until the text bitterly
together, which is
unison, to the last line
moving apart to the M3rd.
As the Cat is sprightly
and jaunty, the piano and
saxophone placing the
beats in an unexpected
manner, the soprano a bit
disjunctive at times,
just as how a cat might
work it's way carefully
over obstacles to find
it's way to it's final
destination.

Nørgård
has finished the quartet,
and himself characterizes
his contribution by
saying that the score
existed “in an only
partly completed form,
which could however be
written out with only a
few cases of
doubt”. With only
two movements and a
playing time of
about nine minutes it is
at its existing
length the shortest of
Holmboe's string
quartets. The first
movement takes the form
of one long arch in a
rocking triple time which
constantly shiftsamong
different tempo and pulse
sensations. At the same
time the rhythmic
energy increases
until the movement, in a
faster Con moto
tempo accelerates to
a more flowing 12/8 time,
coloured both
rhythmically by
cross-rhythms in
duple time and timbrally
by harmonics in the
viola. In its middle
section, Con fuoco,
the movement
culminates in both tempo
and expression until it
falls calm in brief
recapitulations in
reverse order of the
first two sections. The
rocking feeling continues
in the second movement,
but now at a more
extroverted level from
the outset, Allegro
and pizzicato. The
energy builds up
further as the mood
intensifies to Con
fuoco, while all
instruments go over to
bowed playing, but like
the first movement, this
movement ends Adagio
here however not as
a gradual attenuation but
through a sudden shift in
tempo to a calm,
imitative passage before
the movement slowly thins
out to the almost
inaudible through a last,
dense, open sounding
chord with a brief violin
solo above it.

quartet is dedicated to
Holmboe's wife MeLa May
Holmboe, and was given
its first performance by
the Kontra Quartet on
22nd March 1997 at the
Carl Nielsen Academy of
Music in Odense,

Three
Little Nocturnes was
composed by Hans
Abrahamsen in 2005.
Commissioned by the
Cikada Ensemble, with
support from NOMUS, and
written for Frode Haltli
and the Cikada String
Quartet. Programme Note:
In the first nocturne a
slow, falling music
emerges on an irregular
pulse, filled with high
harmonics in the strings.
The second nocturne is
fast and unrestful music,
with a lot of passion,
which in a moment runs
into a glimpse of a
tango. In this movement
the accordion is employed
in its traditional
fashion, using the chord
bass, with its
“oom-pah-pahâ€
standard chords. The
third nocturne is again
slow, indeed very slow,
and it has German tempo
and expression markings.
Thepiece ends with a
lullaby in the accordion,
played with an unusual
technique, imitating the
string portato. This is
accompanied by high
harmonics in the strings,
while the first violin
slowly and softly plays a
melody from the second

in ABA form. The
composition presents few
rhythmic challenges,
allowing the ensemble to
concentrate on beauty of
sound, balance, dynamic
nuance, phrasing, and
expressive performance.
The woodwind voices
present the melody at the
opening accompanied by a
flute countermelody. Care
should be taken to
balance the two parts.
The four-measure phrases
call for tapered dynamics
and freedom of the metric
pulse at cadence points.
A change of tempo and
key, with a lean toward
the minor mode, mark the
contrasting B section (m.
9). Heed the dynamic
markings that swell to a
climax (m. 16) and then
subside within this
section. Take liberty to
hold back the tempo at
the percussion link to
the forte restatement of
A (m. 27) and the arrival
of the fortissimo climax
(m. 33). The coda (m. 35)
should be presented
slowly and serenely as
the composition comes to
a quiet close.

This work,
written by Maxwell Davies
in 1983 for chamber
orchestra, was
commissioned to celebrate
the quartercentenary of
Edinburgh University. The
first performance was
given by the Scottish
Chamber Orchestra
conducted by Edward
Harper in October 1983.
Duration c. 29mins. This
work was thought through
in outline following a
visit to the ruined
pre-Reformation church of
Hoy in Orkney, on a fine
Spring afternoon after
Maxwell Davies had played
the harmonium for the
tiny congregation in its
large bleak Victorian
replacement. The old
church was surrounded by
the graves of centuries,
the more recent ones with
familiar names, largely
of people who lived in
houses now ruinous -
crofters, fishermen,
clerics, sea-captains.
Next to it stood the
chief farmhouse, the Bu,
going back to Viking
times. He thought of the
lives and deaths
encompassed there,
expressed through
hundreds of years of
music in the church, and
in the big barn of the
farm. The plainsongs
'Dies Irae' and 'Victimae
Paschali Laudes' are used
throughout the work - the
first concerning the Day
of Judgement, from the
Mass for the Dead, the
second particular to
Easter Sunday and the
Resurrection. These are
subject to constant
transformation - the
intervallic contour
slowly changes from one
into the other, and their
notes are made to dance
through Renaissance
astrological 'magic
square' patterns. The
orchestra consists of
double woodwind, two
horns, two trumpets and
strings.
