Based
on Wallace Stevens' poem
The Planet on the Table
this string quartet's
world is made of the
music and sounds of
remembered times or of
something heard that the
composer, Martin
Bresnick, liked. The
quartet has five
movements, each headed by
a quotation from one of
Stevens' poems as a point
of departure or pathway
into those remembered
sounds and music. What
matters is that my music,
like his (Stevens')
poetry, should bear some
lineament or character,
some affluence, if only
half perceived in the
poverty of its sounds, of
the planet of which it
was part.. Wallace
Stevens' poem The Planet
on the Table begins -
Ariel was glad he had
written his poems, They
were of a remembered time
Or of something seen that
he liked. In this string
quartet, also entitled
The Planet on the Table,
my planet is made of the
music and sounds of a
remembered time or of
something heard that I
liked. The quartet has
five movements, each
headed by a quotation
from one of Stevens'
poems* as a point of
departure or pathway into
those remembered sounds
and music: I. Mrs.
Anderson's Swedish Baby
II. She Measured the Hour
III. Scene 10 Becomes 11
IV. Someone Has Walked
Across the Snow V. His
Self and the Sun Like
Stevens, my self and the
sun are one, and my
music, like his poetry,
although makings of my
self, is also makings of
the sun. Stevens wrote it
was not important that
his poetry survive, which
is also true of my work.
What matters is that my
music, like his poetry,
should bear some
lineament or character,
some affluence, if only
half perceived in the
poverty of its sounds, of
the planet of which it
was part. *Sources for

126.
Steven
Foster's 1855 tune is
paired by this arranger
with his own paraphrase
of Psalm 126. The
arrangement utilized
various voicings, though
predominantly SATB.
Varied accompaniments
lead to the third stanza
that begins, “Lord,
you flow as a river
through dry and barren
lands,†with a
characteristically
rippling piano part.
Though the assembly can
join in the refrain, this
makes a solid stand-alone
choir
piece.Â

Texts from Aurelius

When
Tim Sharp, Executive
Director of the ACDA,
offered Stucky the Brock
Memorial Commission, it
was decided that the text
would commemorate the
50th anniversary of the
assassination of John F.
Kennedy, since the annual
convention would take
place in Dallas of that
year. To that end, Stucky
chose four different but
pertinent texts to honor
the occasion, although
never referencing JFK by
name. Take Him, Earth was
premiered at the ACDA
convention in March,
2013. Originally scored
for chorus and chamber
ensemble of nine
instruments (available on
a rental basis), Take
Him, Earth is presented
here in piano reduction.
For advanced choirs.
Duration: 13'. When
Tim Sharp, Executive
Director of the American
Choral Directors
Association, very
kindlyoffered me the
Raymond W. Brock Memorial
Commission for 2013, he
suggested that because
thepremiere would take
place at the national
conference in Dallas in
the 50th year since the
assassinationof John F.
Kennedy in that city, the
text might refer in some
way to that grim
anniversary. Hesuggested,
too, that I consider
using a chamber ensemble
or chamber orchestra to
accompany thechorus.I
took these suggestions to
heart, but at the same
time I wanted to write
something universal
enoughto be appropriate
on other occasions, in
other settings. Thus the
score is dedicated to
PresidentKennedy’s
memory, but otherwise he
is never referred to by
name. Instead, I
assembled a group oftexts
that are associated with
him in some way, but that
also stand alone as a
more general eulogy.As a
refrain, there are a few
lines from the early
Christian burial hymn
that begins “Take
him,Earth, for
cherishingâ€
— lines that were
earlier set to music by
Herbert Howells in his
classic motetcommissioned
for Kennedy’s
memorial service in 1963.
The lines of Aeschylus
“Drop, drop
— inour sleep,
upon the heart sorrow
falls†from
Agamemnon were quoted by
Robert F. Kennedy uponthe
death of Martin Luther
King in April 1968. The
celebrated “When he
shall die, cut him out
inlittle starsâ€
from Act III of
Shakespeare’s
Romeo and Juliet was
cited by RFK a few months
after hisbrother’s
murder.

Referring
to the 1975 blockbuster
Jaws, director
Steven Spielberg states
that John Williams' music
“was clearly
responsible for half the
success of the
movie.” This suite
features two of the
signature musical
sequences. In “Out
to Sea,” the trio
of shark hunters led by
police chief Martin Brody
(played by Roy Scheider)
heads into open water to
find the menacing beast.
This is followed by the
“Shark Cage
Fugue,” a
classically inspired and
sophisticated
accompaniment to a tense
underwater scene in which
Hooper (portrayed by
Richard Dreyfuss) comes
face-to-face with the
great white in an
all-too-fragile suspended
cage.
