César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye.After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. / Alto Et Piano

Satz der Sonate op. 11 Die zweibändige Ausgabe unter dem Titel ?Miriam's Song' (Das Lied der Mirjam) ist jüdischen Komponistinnen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts gewidmet. Sie beinhaltet Viola-Bearbeitungen der Werke von Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, Vally Weigl, Lena Stein-Schneider und Ruth Schonthal (Band 1). Das von Schonthal aufgenommene Allegro moderato ist eine Originalkomposition für Viola und Klavier. Im 2. Band begegnen wir den Komponistinnen Helene Liebmann und Sarah Feigin. Der Titel der Ausgabe bezieht sich auf die Rolle der Prophetin Mirjam, der älteren Schwester von Mose und Aaron. Beim Auszug des israelischen Volkes aus Ägypten führte sie nach der Durchquerung des Schilfmeeres den Freudentanz und Gesang der Frauen an (2. Buch Mose 15,20-21). Bezeichnenderweise hat der Berliner Maler Wilhelm Hensel im 19. Jahrhundert seine Frau, die Komponistin Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, als Mirjam porträtiert.Das Repertoire romantischer Konzertliteratur für Viola ist recht begrenzt. Par LUKASZEWSKI PAWEL. In 2012, at the initiative of Pawel Wojciechowski, Pawel Lukaszewski composed Aria for cello and piano. The work was soon published, and a few years later further versions appeared for other solo instruments: soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, viola and violin. The composer wrote the original version for cello with his son Wojtek in mind, who had just completed his fourth year at a primary school of music, but the emotional charge contained in this composition will satisfy the interpretative demands of mature musicians as well, particularly since the composer left performers considerable scope for individual expression. With its harmonies, venturing beyond tonality towards jazz-influenced chords, its simple accompaniment, built from repeated motifs that spill between the plans of the two hands, and its consistent narrative, Aria displays a character that is on one hand somewhat nostalgic, and on the other filled with anxiety and hidden drama. Born in the village of Brand in the Upper Palatinate, Max Reger (1873 1916) was taught by the renowned music theoretician Hugo Riemann. After finishing his studies and working as a freelance performer and composer in Wiesbaden, he moved to Weiden, beset by personal crises, and eventually to Munich. To make himself better known in the musical scene, he had some of his smaller works inserted in the magazine Neue Musikzeitung. Par WIENIAWSKI / KAMASA. In addition to the numerous violin pieces in H. Wieniawski's compositional output there is only one piee for viola and piano, ''Reverie'', which is without opus number. The ''Dream'' ost probably comes from that period when Wieniawski stayed in London (1858-1859) and, apart from his regular concert activities, took part in chamber concerts, which were very popular at that time. During one of the Beethoven-Quartett-Society concerts a quartet of four outstanding virtuosos (Ernst, Joachim, Wieniawski and Piatti, the cellist) performed together. Wieniawski, who played the viola on that occasion, presumably concluded that there were too few original compositions for thisbeautiful instrument and decided to write a short viola piece himself.
