Ins
tead of an opening chorus
Cantata BWV 42 begins
with a magnificent
Sinfonia in the style of
the Brandenburg
Concertos. It is possible
that Bach took this
movement from a concerto
which he had composed
earlier. The first aria,
for alto with obbligato
oboe and bassoon, could
be derived from the
middle movement of this
concerto. The heroic bass
aria, a statement of the
certainty of faith, forms
a weighty counterpart to
the opening movement.

presents the work in the
two different

through the autograph
scores: the earlier
version with solely brass
instruments, and the
later one with mixed
instruments. Both
versions are printed
consecutively. Of
particular interest for
an authentic performance
are two Litui, which are
called for in both
versions. To this day it
has been impossible to
determine what
instruments are meant
here: high horns in B
flat? Or trumpets? The
work has more unanswered
questions for us for
example, the occasion for
which the first version
was written in ca.
1736/37, and the reason
why the work was newly
orchestrated after
1740.

Text: von Ziegler,
Christiane Mariane. Text
by Christiane Mariane von
Ziegler.
After
breaking off the annual
cantata cycle at the end
of March 1725 Bach set a
series of cantata texts
by the Leipzig poet
Christiana Mariana von
Ziegler, who maintained
one of the first
literary-musical salons.
The large scale chorale
chorus ties this work to
the chorale cantatas. The
central bass aria
Auf,auf, mit hellem
Schall with solo trumpet
is note-worthy since in
place of a middle section
in the aria, here Bach
employs an accompagnato
recitative. Score and
parts available

Com
posed in the late period,
around 1740 A lively
discussion about the
choral movement Nun ist
das Heil und die Kraft
has been carried on, in
which not only all
previous assumptions have
been called into
question-including Bach's
authorship-but also show
how little we know about
the history of this
magnificent movement.
Even though there is
little to refute the 1982
presumption that the work
was handed down in the
form of an arrangement,
the question remains open
concerning the identity
of the arranger, as well
as the alleged form of
the original design.
Therefore it seemed
appropriate to forego any
attempts at
reconstruction. Rather,
for the present new
edition the music has
been critically examined
and commented upon based
on the surviving copy
from Bach's circle. Score
available separately -
see item CA.3105000.
