In this revolutionary
period, the devoted
republican Patriots were
in conflict with the
Orangists. A civil war
followed, in which the
Patriots were beaten and
driven away by a Prussian
army. This composition is
an abstract piece
inspired by the Patriots.
The thematic material is
based on the Dutch war
song ‘Merck toch
hoe sterck’. Its
powerful minor melody,
which has its origins in
the Eighty Years’
War, isrecognizable
throughout the work,
presented in variations
of constantly shifting
character.

Structured around the
Latin liturgy of the mass
for the dead, the work
has a duration of more
than an hour and also
incorporates poems in
Finnish, Swedish and
English, reflecting both
the specific reason for
the commission and the
universality of human
suffering caused by war.
In the non-liturgical
texts chosen by Freeman,
birds are a recurring
image, as is that of a
mother and child. The
work ends with lines by
Walt Whitman from a poem
written in the aftermath
of the American Civil
War; lines described by
the composer as
‘some of the most
comforting poetry in the
English language.’
Also included on the disc
is A Wilderness of Sea,
another recent choral
piece which draws on
works by Shakespeare, and
the poet’s images

Empuries is the result of
the interest Ruera showed
throughout his life for
the culture and music of
ancient Greece. As he
himself writes in the
introduction to the
composition: The motives
behind this work were
inspired by contemplating
and analysing the melos
of ancient Greece. The
few melodies that have
been discovered from
those far-off times
inspired the composer of
Empuries to create this
work, conceived with the
Greek modal system in
mind, and adapted to
modern instruments and
tastes. The tetrachord
and pentachords of these
forms are the very bases
of this work. The
descending drift of the
cadence, the harmonic
priority of the upper and
lower notes of the
tetrachords and the
displacement of these
chords to different
acoustic levels, make it
impossible to specify the
classic concept of a set
tonality which, within
the improvised musical
working of the piece,
leads to a naturally
intertonal or atonal
piece of music. Empuries
came to light in 1971,
when it won group A of
the Ciutat de Barcelona
prize. But one must, in
fact, go back to the
1930s to find its true
origins. Ruera made his
first foray into the
theme of ancient Greece
with the sardana,
Empuries, la grega, with
which he won first prize
in the Jocs Florals in
Girona, in 1931. Shortly
afterwards, he wrote a
piece of organ music
entitled Bucolics, in the
Greek modal style, which
was destroyed during the
Spanish civil war. Ruera
continued to work on the
theme and in 1936 he
presented his work Tres
moviments simfonics, for
a big band, inspired by
the ancient Greek modes,
at the XIV International
Festival of the ISCM held
in Barcelona. The work
was chosen to debut in
the festival's opening
concert on 19 April 1936
at Palacio de Bellas
Artes in Barcelona. In
1959, Ruera won the Pau
Casals Prize at the Jocs
Florals de la Llengua
Catalana, held at the
Sorbonne in Paris, for
his work, Empuries: poema
per a cobla i orquestra,
which would later become
the fourth movement of
Empuries. Nine years
later, in 1968, Barcelona
City Orchestra, conducted
by Antoni Ros Marba, gave
the first ever
performance of the
symphonic poem Pastoral,
written to be the first
movement of Empuries, in
Granollers. The final
step was when he finally
completed the work, won
the Ciutat de Barcelona
prize, opened in
Granollers on 2 May 1976
and recorded it for the
Columbia de Barcelona

daughter are waiting for
their return and have
prepared food for them .
Alas, they will never
return .It is a
melancholy, sentimental
melody with a cheerful
up-tempo section
representing the mother's
and daughter’s
memories of the happy
times together .

the American Guitar is
the first book to
describe the early
history of American
guitar design in detail.
It tells the story of how
a European instrument was
transformed into one with
all of the design and
construction features
that define the iconic
American flat-top guitar.
This transformation
happened within a mere 20
years, a remarkably brief
period. The person who
dominates this history is
C. F. Martin Sr.,
America's first major
guitar maker and the
founder of the Martin
Guitar Company, which
continues to produce
outstanding flat-top
guitars today. After
emigrating from his
native Saxony to New York
in 1833, Martin quickly
established a guitar
making business,
producing instruments
modeled after those of
his mentor, Johann
Stauffer of Vienna. By
the time he moved his
family and business to
rural Pennsylvania in
1839, Martin had absorbed
and integrated the
influence of Spanish
guitars he had seen and
heard in New York. In
Pennsylvania, he evolved
further, inventing a
uniquely American guitar
that was fully developed
before the outbreak of
the Civil War. Inventing
the American Guitar
traces Martin's evolution
as a craftsman and
entrepreneur and explores
the influences and
experiments that led to
his creation of the
American guitar that is
recognized and played
around the world today.

The 1937
Spanish Civil War saw the
bombing of the town of
Guernica by combined
German and Italian air
forces, at the behest of
the Spanish government.
This was one of the first
air raids on a
defenseless civilian
population, and the
resulting devastation was
so horrible that artists
of all stripes sought to
express their outrage
through their crafts.
Chief among these was the
painting Guernica by
Pablo Picasso, which, in
turn, inspired the
ten-part poem of the same
name by author Carlos de
Oliveira. Sharaf now
brings this text to a new
setting for voice and
piano, with either cello
or guitar, dedicated to
the Ensemble for These
Times. The music reflects
the utter despair of the
event, yet even then,
humanity will find
glimpses of hope for a
return to better times.

conflict weer even de kop
opsteekt, volgt een
tamelijk
lichtvoetiggedeelte,
waarmee de hoop op vrede
tot uitdrukking wordt
gebracht. Dat deze hoop
voorbarig is, blijkt uit
het feit dat de heersers
(uitgebeeld door de
altsaxofoon en de fluit)
anders beslissen. De
strijdkrachten rukken
vervolgensop en laten een
spoor van dood en verderf
achter. Het noodlot slaat
bikkelhard toe:
onschuldige mensen worden
verkracht en vermoord en
er vinden op grote schaal
etnische zuiveringen
plaats. De bevolking
lijdt.
Aggression,

Hoffnung - all das kann
man in Banja Luka
horen. In diesem Werk
verarbeitet Jan de Haan
seine Uberlegungen uber
das ehemalige
Yugoslawien, uber das ein
grausamer Burgerkrieg
