Vaughan
Williams's romance for
solo violin and orchestra
is given new life in this
beautiful arrangement.
Perfect as a rehearsal
tool in preparation for a
larger-scale orchestral
concert, the arrangement
is also ideal for
performance in a chamber
recital.

Berkeley's
second string quartet
uses a free, random
presentation of thematic
material. There is a
sharp contrast between
the tight and rhythmic
central section and the
final passage which
dispenses with barlines
altogether, providing a
fascinating journey
through interrelated and
continuous sections.

This
four-movement work
represents the composer's
desire 'to write a piece
of real chamber music,
intimate and
conversational in tone,
drawing the listener into
its worlds'. The result,
he writes, 'is a rather
inward-looking,
reflective work, not
without a capricious
aspect, but only
occasionally raising its
voice.'.

Mathias'
third and final quartet
was commissioned by the
1986 Harrogate
International Festival
and premiered there in
August that year by the
Medici Quartet. It has
three movements: the
first takes the form of a
sonata, the second starts
off as mysterious and
lyrical and moves into a
fiery climax, and the
third uses exciting fugal
passages and 'scherzando'
sections, which make for
a thrilling
conclusion.
