Capriccioso begint
met een fanfareachtige
introductie, waarna een
korte ‘solo
rubato’ volgt. Dan
begint het echte
‘concertato’
. De begeleiding
antwoordt en
becommentarieert met
tussenpozen. De
introductie duikt weerop,
waarna dezelfde opzet nog
eens volgt. Deel twee
presenteert een tweede
thema, als een dialoog
uitgewerkt. Het
beginthema keert terug,
maar met een anders
opgezette begeleiding.
Het derde deel is een
brede dialoog tussen
solisten begeleiding. De
opnieuw fanfareachtige
inleiding komt steeds als
een refrein terug tussen
de tarantella-achtige
solopassages. Het spel
tussen de solist en de

slightly mysterious intro
leads to an orchestral
climax with ascending
melodies and the entrance
of the soloist. This
occurs at first with
fragmentary musical
ideas, and then with
longer melodic lines. The
orchestra delivers the
dialogue withthe soloist,
and creates a fitting
musical frame with a
delicate and colourful
instrumentation. Towards
the end of the music, the
atmosphere from the
beginning is restored,
and the soloist finishes
on the same note that he
started the piece on.
The concerto is also
available as a piano
reduction.

Bohemian violinist and
composer Frantisek Drdla
(1868-1944) composed the
delightfully charming
piece entitled Souvenir.
This piece for violin and
piano is one of the most
popular compositions by
Drdla. Wil van der Beek
has produced this
arrangement for Flute and
Concert Band which
remains faithful to the
original version. The
texture of the work
allows the soloist to
show off both their
technical and musical
talents and its charm
makes it an ideal encore
item at any
concert.

Rhapsody differs in
several respects from
most other concert works
by Jan Van der Roost,
with its impressive
twists and turns and
musical allusions to the
work of John Adams. A
first, minimalist
movement, is followed by
a lyrical andexpressive
second movement for
various soloists in
different ranges. The
third movement sees a
stark change of mood with
a rigid metrical figure
before a powerful and
energetic
close.

kiest componist Jan Van
der Roost voor het

eerste, bijna
