The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one,and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion,” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together.” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals.” His vision is rejected,and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury,” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep,” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In thesecond movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world.” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast,which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. 2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country’s history…One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired—and it will take great effort to overcome thepsychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

2011 was een rampzalig jaar voor Japan: op 11 maart teisterde een hevige aardbeving het noordoosten van het land, bracht een enorme tsunami teweeg en veroorzaakte zeer grote schade aan mens en natuur. De daaruit voortvloeiende problemenmet de kernreactor van Fukushima maakten de ellende nog groter: een zwarte pagina in het bestaan van het land ... Dat in dergelijke dramatische omstandigheden ook (en vooral) het culturele bestel een flinke knauw krijgt, ishelaas een haast onvermijdelijke consequentie. Zo ook in Japan: verschillende high school bands in de getroffen regio verloren hun repetitieruimte en/of instrumenten: het zal lang duren voordat de geleden schade is hersteld - enhet zal ook moeite kosten om er mentaal weer bovenop te geraken. Met het oog op dat laatste aspect verzocht Yutaka Nishida (samensteller van het radioprogramma The Bandwagon) een paar componisten om een eenvoudig werkje te schrijvendat speelbaar is door een groot aantal orkesten. Als bij toeval kwam een dergelijk verzoek eveneens van de kant van de OSAKAN Philharmonic Winds, waarmee Jan Van der Roost op 25 september een concert dirigeerde, uitsluitend gewijdaan eigen werken. Daar werd Song of Hope dan ook ten doop gehouden en het werkje sloeg meteen aan bij uitvoerders en publiek: na een tamelijk donkere start in het lage register evolueert het tot een optimistischer en opener slot.Er is inderdaad hoop op betere tijden!

La catastrophe du réacteur nucléaire de Fukushima ajouta encore ces malheurs : une période bien sombre de l’histoire du pays…Des événements aussi dramatiques ont souvent un impact négatif sur les arts culturels. Ce fut le cas au Japon : plusieurs orchestres d’harmonie des collèges des régions affectées perdirent leurs locaux de répétition et/ou leurs instruments. Il faudra beaucoup de temps pour que les choses reviennent la normale - et pour estomperles cicatrices psychologiques. S’intéressant particulièrement celles-ci, Yutada Nishida (directeur du programme radiophonique The Bandwagon) demanda quelques compositeurs d’écrire une œuvre simple pouvant être interprétée par de nombreux orchestres.Il se trouva que l’Harmonie Philharmonique d’Osaka (que Jan Van der Roost avait dirigée lors d’un concert exclusivement composé de ses œuvres, le 25 septembre) avait eu la même idée. Ce concert vit la création mondiale de Song of Hope, qui interpella immédiatement les musiciens et l’auditoire. Cette pièce débute sombrement dans le registre grave avant d’évoluer vers une conclusion plus pétillante, plus optimiste. Il est assurément permis d’espérer des temps meilleurs !

Song of Hope è un brano che ha profondamente commosso esecutori e pubblico.Song of Hope inizia nel registro acuto con suoni oscuri e melanconici, ma si sviluppa in un clima di ottimismo, come a voler simboleggiare un futuro più sereno.

Sbandiamo ! is a joyous—and swinging—work, taking its title from the wind music event held annually in the medieval Italian city of Gubbio, Umbria in which various bands from all over Italy participate. The first performance of this piece was given at the Piazza Grande, Gubbio, under the baton of the composer himself, with a wind band of some 250 musicians. A stately introduction, with festive percussion, is followed by a catchy theme in alternating pop and march rhythms. The opening theme then returns as a marcia cantabile, and the work is brought to a grand and compelling conclusion.

Sba ndiamo! is zowel een vreugdevol als swingend werk. De titel verwijst naar het gelijknamige blaasmuziekevenement in de middeleeuwse stad Gubbio in Umbrië (Italië). Daar klonk op de Piazza Grande de première met een blaasorkest bestaande uit ongeveer 250 musici, onder leiding van de componist. The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Sie haben es erraten? Tirol Terra Fortis ist ein programmatisches Werk rund um die Geschichte Andreas Hofers und den Freiheitskampf Tirols vor 200 Jahren. Der Einsatz des Flügelhorns verleiht diesem künstlerischen und klangvollen Werk ein besonderes Lokalkolorit.

Le compositeur belge Jan Van der Roost a composé cette œuvre la demande de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Wilten-Innsbruck en Autriche pour les cérémonies commémoratives du bicentenaire de l’insurrection tyrolienne de 1809. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Le compositeur belge Jan Van der Roost a composé cette œuvre la demande de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Wilten-Innsbruck en Autriche pour les cérémonies commémoratives du bicentenaire de l’insurrection tyrolienne de 1809. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

La Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) ha invitato il compositore belga Jan Van der Roost a scrivere un'opera per celebrare il bicentenario dell’Insorgenza tirolese, che ebbe luogo nel 1809. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.

A Little Irish Suite is an original work composed specifically for the Compact Band Series. This series offers smaller ensembles the opportunity to perform original, high-quality works. A Little Irish Suite consists of three movements, all based on Irish folk tunes. Clear structure and crisp harmonies complemented by plain, comprehensible melodies, are characteristic of this piece. It offers conductors the opportunity to work on tone, balance, phrasing as well as on technique with their ensemble. As with all works in the Compact Band Series, A Little Irish Suite features optional parts for instruments that are played less frequently. Conductors can pickand choose the parts needed to best fit the music and the musicians available, to determine the best possible instrumentation for their own ensemble. The duration of six minutes and the large variety and contrast of material played in A Little Irish Suite also make it an ideal selection for competitions or festivals.

Harry James s’illustre d’abord auprès de Benny Goodman, mais décide de fonder sa propre formation en 1939 et en fait l’un des Orchestres de Swing les plus réputés de l’époque. Il engage notamment Frank Sinatra et reprend des classiques tels que Sleepy Lagoon d’Eric Coates et Ciribiribin d’Alberto Pestalozza. Naohiro Iwai a rassemblé ces deux succès dans un arrangement pour Trompette Solo et Orchestre d’Harmonie.

Prior to the second world war Harry James was a ‘name’. In 1939 this trumpet player/composer founded his own orchestra with which he undertook a series of successful tours. Naohiro Iwai wrote this solo for trumpet with wind band accompaniment as an ode to Harry James, making use of the golden oldies Sleepy Lagoon and Ciribiribin.

The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its ownmomentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel’s La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.

The Unknown Journey is geschreven in opdracht van de Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, die werd opgericht in 1954 en daarna is uitgegroeid tot een van de beste universiteitsorkesten van Japan. De componist heeft de titel gekozen omdathet werk zijn eigen drijfkracht leek te creëren terwijl het zich ontwikkelde vanuit een langzaam begin en steeds in een wat hoger tempo. Tegen het slot wordt de muziek geleidelijk getransformeerd tot de laatste maten van Ravels La Valse, eencompositie die het concept van een onstuitbare drijfkracht perfect karakteriseert.

The Unknown Journey wurde von der 1954 gegründeten Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, die zu den besten Universitäts-Blasorche stern Japans zählt, in Auftrag gegeben. Der Komponist wählte diesen Titel, da das Stück seinen eigenen Schwungzu entwickeln scheint, indem es langsam beginnt und das Tempo sich kontinuierlich steigert. Zum Ende hin verwandelt es sich allmählich in die Schlusstakte von Ravels La Valse, ein Stück, das die Idee des unaufhaltsamen Schwungs perfektbeschreibt.

The Unknown Journey fut commandé par le Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band, un orchestre d’harmonie établi en 1954 qui est désormais l’un des meilleurs orchestres universitaires du Japon. Le compositeur choisit ce titre puisque, pendantle développement du morceau, il semblait créer son propre élan, commençant lentement et accélérant continuellement. Vers la fin il devient progressivement semblable aux dernières mesures de La Valse de Ravel, un morceau qui caractériseparfaitemen t l’idée d’élan irrépressible.
