Here, the band will be able to work with latin rhythms, syncopation (which doesn't rush) and with possible solo elements on the melody. Use your imagination and feel free to re-arrange to let your musicians shine. (Example: bar 27 and onwards can be performed as a duet) All three songs can be played separately. They have different degrees of difficulty and if the band lack the ability to perform the last melody, you can easily stop before that. 1. 'We don't talk about Bruno' (1-55) benefits greatly from having a Guiro saying 'go-ap tsh tsh'. This piece can be stopped by playing to the end of bar 54. If you want to play this piece only, you can easily extend it, by repeating from 27, perhaps with other soloists? 2. 'Surface Pressure' (55-116) If the cowbell-part is not played, percussionists have to play these two weak beats in 56. The groove for drum set is also very important from 68. Also, that you get a proper swing feeling on 84- 98 and that the drummer in 99 really goes back to even eighths. If you want to extend this piece, you may repeat from 84. If you want to end after this song, you can insert a ritardando 2 bars before 116 and preferably add a quarter note high G, then a quarter rest, and then a darker G. Another possibility is to repeat from 84 and then stop at the first note in 100. 3. 'The Family Madrigal' can of course also be played alone. This is truly a song that gets people clapping! I have chosen to make the opening rhythm a little easier by adding an eighth note to the one (120) If the ensemble has a very good understanding of rhythm, it can be skipped, but then the only tone in the phrase that is on the pulse beats will be the quarter note in the second measure. You can start the piece straight on bar 120 without the drum intro. If you want to extend this piece, you can repeat 152 – 199. (Or you can go all the way back to 136) If you do so, you can perhaps skip the first house at the end, if the audience is not standing on the chairs dancing Have fun performing this arrangement! Many of the timeless pop songs from the 1960s are very playable for instrumental groups, and here comes another arrangement from this great music period, arranged for flexible instrumentation in the popular series SHOWBLOW. “Dream Lover” was written by singer-songwriter and actor Bobby Darin. Darin´s real name was Walden Robert Cassotto. When he had his debut as a singer in 1956, he changed his name to Bobby Darin, from a neon sign on the Chinese restaurant “Mandarin”, where the first three letters were burned out. “Dream Lover” became a multi-million seller, originally recorded and released in 1959 with Neil Sedaka on piano in addition to Darin on vocal. Some of the many cover versions of the song: Ricky Nelson (1979), Tanya Tucker with Glen Campbell (1980), Manhattan Transfer with James Taylor (1995), Cliff Richard (2012). Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775, which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for violin and orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart, who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop, was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting withall the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773. The series of cartoons have neither dialogue nor text: the music presents the amiable and entertaining adventures of the rabbit with chequered ears and its friends. Balázs has rephrased and developed the well-known melodies and as a result a ''children's story symphony'' of seven movements has been created in which, in contrast with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, there is no narrator but the instruments themselves represent the story-tellers. The composer has again associated the groups of instruments with one another in a colourful and varied manner, skilfully alternating the modes of solo, chamber orchestra and orchestra. Movements I, II, IV and VII represent a ''short suite'' that can be independently performed, thus due to its duration of four minutes and easier level, ensembles with more modest opportunities can also perform it. From aromas of family favorites cooking in the kitchen, to the images of decorated trees, snow scenes, and caroling - all are a part of that wonderful celebration. Rather than just taking the same old Public Domain Christmas carols for one more go ‘round, Timothy Johnson has composed the majority of THREE HOLIDAY SCENES using fresh and original melodies. The first scene opens with fragments of “Oh Tannenbaum” but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An “effets de neige, ” or “Snowfall effect, ” carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of “caroling. ” Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously.This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. In this moderately easy suite, Jan Van der Roost uses four authentic folk tunes from the Swedish-speaking part of Finland. These are from Nagu, Oravais, Lappfjärd and Karlebynejden, and have been joined together without pauses to form a continuous suite. The work begins with noble, almost meditative melodies. Gradually the tempo becomes faster, resulting in a brilliant and cheerful folk dance. The melody regularly goes from one band section to another ensuring that the timbre remains varied and there is no question of monotony. 'The songs are conceived as a whole, as if a wayfarer, with his destiny, is now looking out into the world and is wandering from place to place. … The most painful experiences were bound to come…' (Gustav Mahler, 1885) Mahler's famous set of four songs for voice and orchestra is newly available in the handsome UE Study Scores format. Gustav Mahler's 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' ('Songs of a Wayfarer') occupy a special position in his song oeuvre. Subsequent to the 'Frühe Lieder und Gesänge' ('Songs and Airs') which - with the exception of the 'Serenade' and 'Phantasie' from Don Juan - were composed between 1880 and 1882 as songs for piano and voice, the 'Gesellenlieder' ('Wayfarer Songs') were the first works to be presented in the dual versions (songs for piano and voice / orchestral songs) that were so significant for Mahler's song compositions. The 'Gesellenlieder' were initially written as songs for piano and voice between late 1884 / early 1885 and 1890, and Mahler's orchestration only followed in the years between 1890 and 1893. Another unique feature is that they were explicitly conceived as a song cycle and together with the 'Kindertotenlieder' ('Songs on the Death of Children') and possibly also the 'Lied von der Erde' ('Song of the Earth') - although the latter is far more akin to a symphony - these are the only song cycles in Mahler's song oeuvre. Par HYNNINEN MAIJA. Maija Hynninen's piano quintet Nine-channeled Pearl flows effortlessly. Beginning with rhythmical gamelan-inspired movement it continues through twirling scales that lead to the heart of the piece – a sonorous bell-like harmonic on the piano. From this calm center the music continues floating in a dream-like world ending with a chorale played by the strings. Duration: 10' This product includes the score (=piano part) and the string parts. Composer Maija Hynninen (b. 1977) is working in the areas of concert music, electronic instrument design and multidisciplinary performances. The essence of her music builds on the unique moments where the parameters of this world are slightly altered to allow a glimpse of another reality to be present. In this musical drama, composed in honour of the 150th anniversary of the death of Jacob Grimm in 2013, song and spoken word continually alternate with one another. In compensation I have tried my hand at several instrumental things, for I have composed two quartets for Violins, Viola and Violincello [A minor, D 804; D minor, D 810] and an octet [F major, D 803] and will write yet another quartet [not carried out]. Indeed, in this way I hope to prepare the way to the full-scale symphony. The latest news in Vienna is that Beethoven will give a concert [on 7 May 1824] . . . I too am inclined to give a similar concert next Year, God willing. ” Thus Schubert, writing on 31 March 1824 to his friend Leopold Kupelwieser in Rome, in a lengthy letter whose first section is decidedly low-spirited. In order to prepare the way to the full-scale symphony – by which he doubtless meant the genre as a whole rather than any specific work – he wrote string quartets and a large-scale piece of chamber music for strings and winds, taking Beethoven as his guide.
