The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications. The edition presents numerous new findings about the genesis of both works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Par SPOHR LOUIS. Louis Spohr?s technically, extremely demanding concertos have long been part of clarinetists? standard repertoire. Like the first clarinet concerto, this second concerto was composed for the clarinetist Johann Hermstedt, probably in the spring of 1810. Critics praised the concerto at its premiere, stating that it was ?undeniably one of the most accomplished works of art of its kind.? Emphasized was also the ?great and brilliant treatment of the solo instrument, combined with a very original orchestra accompaniment, where every part, even the timpani, is obbligato.? The concerto was even then a great success with the audience. For publication, Spohr supplemented the solo part with various ossia passages as simplifying alternatives. These can of course be found in the score as well as in the piano reduction presented in Ullrich Scheideler?s new critical Urtext edition in collaboration with G. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. In late 1791 Mozart wrote his famous work the Concerto for “Bassettklarinette” and Orchestra K. 622, known today as his Clarinet Concerto. The challenging virtuoso piece was written for Anton Stadler, and the music follows the three-part structure of Allegro, Adagio and a Rondo finale. This work was first published in 1801 and by no less than three publishers. It is one of the most important works in the Clarinet repertoire, and remains a popular work to the present date. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Le concerto a toujours été le genre où je me suis senti le plus à l'aise. La rhétorique de la virtuosité étant une valeur forte dans mes conduites dramatiques, la relation de conflit entre un soliste volubile et un ensemble est un élément narratif important dans mon langage. Même dans des effectifs 'démocratiques' comme le quatuor à cordes ou la symphonie, j'aime jouer sur l'opposition et le contraste. Dans cette nouvelle oeuvre, la clarinette, mon instrument fétiche, occupe une place ambiguë. En effet, elle est à la fois membre de l'orchestre et soliste récurrent. Le modèle est ici clairement avoué : il s'agit du Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune de Claude Debussy. Comme dans cette pièce de référence, l'instrument principal guide le discours et contamine la texture générale d'un orchestre de vastes dimensions, oscillant sans cesse entre la musique de chambre et le gigantisme sonore. La pièce n'aurait jamais vu le jour sans la sonorité inspiratrice de David Minetti, avec qui j'éprouve un plaisir permanent à travailler depuis quelques années.
