Grand Nordic Tune. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. 'Storslått' or in English ?Grand Nordic Tune? is one of many original pieces written by composer Øystein Olsen Vadsten. 'Slått' is a general term for music played to traditional Norwegian dances. ?Grand Nordic Tune? was a commissioned work for the Rælingen Musikklag's 70-year anniversary concert in 2022, where the piece was premiered. They wanted something a little pompous, and preferably something in the style of Nordic folk music, which the composer is known for. The title in Norwegian then was obvious, 'Storslått', which in Norwegian has a double meaning, both a big tune and, in a double meaning, pompous or magnificent. As usual, the starting point is a traditional Nordic dance form, and this time the choice fell on the distinctive Swedish 'polska', which is played in ¾. The dance, despite its name, reportedly has no connection to Poland, but is entirely of Scandinavian origin. It has been danced for centuries, and has also been called the devil's dance, because it had a hypnotizing effect on people, so that they could not stop, but danced themselves to death. Hence people thought that it must have been the devil who caused it. Traditionally, there is a lot of repetition in this type of music, which contributes to this hypnotic effect. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie

Elle s?ouvre avec « My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground », un air également connu sous le titre « Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms » (mesures 5-24). Vient ensuite un autre air célèbre, « The Minstrel Boy » (mesures 29-44), lui-même suivi de « The Groves of Blarney », peut être mieux connu sous le titre « The Last Rose of Summer » (mesures 53-68). Old Kentucky Memories (Souvenirs du vieux Kentucky), après une introduction de 14 mesures, toute l?attention se porte sur la chanson « My Old Kentucky Home ». A fil de la pièce, des fragments de souvenirs fugaces émergent, disparaissant aussi vite qu?ils se présentent : cette impression est créée par le biais de courts motifs et thèmes empruntés à d?autres chansons. On les entend brièvement puis ils s?estompent, comme de lointains souvenirs du vieux Kentucky, jusqu?à une reprise de l?introduction pour conclure la pièce. 3. Uppland, est une province suédoise aux riches traditions musicales, tout comme l?ensemble de la Suède, qui compte de nombreuses danses et chansons. Beaucoup sont en tonalité mineure, et cette partie en comprend trois. La première est « Svensk folkvisa » (mesures 1-38), qui est suivie de « ?Värmlandsvisan » (mesures 39-67), et la pièce s?achève avec « Vexelsang » (mesure 68 jusqu?à la fin). 4. Ratatouille, cette dernière partie ne comprend pas d?air provenant d?un seul pays. C?est un méli-mélo, une « ratatouille » de trois chansons folkloriques sans aucun lien. Il y a d?abord une chanson russe, « Le Rossignol » (mesures 1-30), puis « Sakura », originaire du Japon (mesures 31-58) et, enfin, « Waltzing Matilda », venue d?Australie (mesure 59 jusqu?à la fin). Par GYORFFY ISTVAN. Hungarian-style dance music which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries - generally referred to as ungaresca - represents a valuable part of European musical tradition. István Gyorffy's work (2007-2010) is a late successor of this tradition. It was written with the intention of embodying the eastern-central European tradition in order to present an alternative to the current fashions of music for wind instruments. The composer's approach to this style utilizes traditional forms of music. Both the first and third movements effectively optimize a concert band's tonal possibilities by using solos and small chamber groups in a varied manner. The slow and melodic second movement transfers a characteristic playing technique of Hungarian instrumental folk music to the concert band. István Gyorffy composed Ungaresca for young people preparing for careers in music. The work provides an excellent opportunity for students not only to display their instrumental skills, but also to gain orchestral playing experience./ Répertoire / Concert Band

Based on the traditional folk tune used in the 2015 Disney film, Cinderella, this simple arrangement is divided into 3 violin, 3 viola, 3 cello, and 2 double bass parts. It would be ideal for an ensemble of mixed abilities: every instrument can either play the melody, or one of the harmony or bass line parts. Alternatively, students can take turns picking one of the parts and changing lines during rehearsals---or even through the performance, as the 3 parts appear on the page as either A, B, or C. Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON / DOSS THOMAS (Arr.). Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn?t have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Anton Bruckner composed about 40 motets during his lifetime, the earliest a setting of Pange lingua around 1835, and the last, Vexilla regis, in 1892. Thomas Doss has compiled some of these motets in this volume for symphonic wind orchestra. These motets show many characteristics of personal expression, especially Bruckner's colourful harmony in the earlier works, which is in places aligned with Franz Schubert (changes between major and minor; and movements in thirds). Later works are characterised by many components which, in addition to the expanded stature of the movements, include above all a sense of the instrumentation as an outward phenomenon and the harmony as a compositional feature that works more internally. Some aspects of Bruckner's work are the result of his long period of study, which familiarised him not only with the tradition of his craft, but also gave him insights into the 'modernity' of his time in such composers as Wagner, Liszt and Berlioz. A Suite of British and Irish Folk Songs. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Songs from Across the Water est une commande du Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds et de Phil Evans, fondateur et directeur. Phil Evans est originaire du Royaume-Uni où il a joué dans l’orchestre des HM Royal Marines pendant 25 ans. Vivant désormais aux Etats-Unis, il y a fondé le Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds en 2008 et lui a donné le slogan « un orchestre américain à l’accent britannique », aspirant à combiner les meilleures traditions d’harmonies des deux pays. Avec cette idée à l’esprit, le compositeur Philip Sparke a décidé de créer une suite de chansons folkloriques britanniques, orchestrées à l’influence américaine en rapport avec la philosophie du groupe.
