Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. 'The title, No other people., is taken from Raymond Roussel's New Impressions of Africa, a fifty-nine page poem which took him fifteen years to write - a length of time mainly caused by his tortuous compositional methods. In Roussel, sentences are broken down in maze-like ways, often producing others which relate to the sound of the original. I'm not aware of any direct, illustrative connection between the music of No other people. and Roussel's book. But I was very struck by the everydayness of Zo's drawings. There is something poignant in his not knowing what he was illustrating. Like the drawings of a blind person. Their banality takes on a mysteriousness by being placed by Roussel in his book, seeming to illustrate bizarre events unknown to Zo. They are impersonal, the people in them unaware that they lead another life in a poem of which they know nothing. Something of this is in the music.' Gerald Barry, 2009/ Répertoire / Orchestre

This lively piece by Susan Day, written in G minor and D minor, reinforces many skills, such as executing slurs at a fast tempo and playing flats and accidentals in tune, to achieve the characteristic flavor of Russian music. 'Realms of Endless Day' is a fantasy setting of the hymn tune melody, 'Picardy.' This melody, thought to have been named for the region in France where it is believed the melody originated, is also the melody for the hymns 'Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence' and 'Christians, Let Us Love One Another,' as well as the 'Hymn of Saint James.' This enduring and tuneful melody is given three contrasting statements that gradually build to an exciting conclusion. This piece is scored for full orchestra by arranger Michael Kamuf, but will work quite effectively with strings alone. (3:30) / Orchestre
