Par PROKOFIEV SERGEI. Interestingly there are two different versions of Prokofiev’s second piano concerto, the first written between 1912 and 1913, the second written in 1923. However, during the Russian Civil War, the original manuscript of the Concerto was destroyed in a fire in Prokofiev’s apartment in St. Petersburg. In 1923 he recreated the score from memory, effectively composing the second edition of the work, which was very different. Prokofiev wrote to a friend: I have so completely rewritten the second concerto that it might be considered the fourth (his third piano concerto having been written in the meantime). At the time of composition, the concerto's wild temperamentleft some exalted, whereas others were horrified by the jarring and at the time futuristic sound. Today, however, it is generally recognised as a masterpiece and is one of the most virtuosic works in the piano concerto repertoire. Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn are composed in a minor key. Written in the early 1770s, the Symphony Hob.I:52 in C minor bears some similarities to the slightly earlier Symphony in E minor Hob.I:44 (?Mourning?, BA 10988), not only because they both are composed in a minor key but also because they both feature a pair of horns tuned at different pitches. Haydn seems to have experimented with differently tuned horns inspired by an article in Johann Adam Hiller?s journal ?Musikalische Nachrichten und Anmerkungen? of July 1770, which suggested to tune the horns a minor third apart in order to expand the total horn range. While Haydn followed this recommendation just like that in the E-minor symphony, he chose to have the horns tuned a major sixth apart (high C and E-flat) in the outer movements of the C-minor symphony Hob. Note by the composer:'Triple Quartet is for string quartet and two pre-recorded quartets, or three live string quartets with no pre-recording. The piece is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, and is organized harmonically on four dominant chords in minor keys a minor third apart: E minor, G minor, Bb minor, C# minor and then returning to E minor to form a cycle.The first movement goes through this harmonic cycle twice with a section about one minute long on each of the four dominat chords. The result is a kind of variation form. Rhythmically the first movement has the second and third quartet playing interlocking chords while the first quartet plays longer melodies in canon between the first violin and viola against the second violin and cello. The slow movement is more completely contrapuntal with a long slow melody in canon eventually in all 12 voices. It stays in E minor throughout. The third movement resumes the original fast tempo, maintains the harmonic chord cycle but modulates back and forth between keys more rapidly. These three short chorales (G major, G minor, G major) are excellent warm-up exercises, but would also be very useful for training ensembles to listen for pure intonation. Vibrato and tone quality could also be focused upon, as well as watching the conductor for pauses and upbeats. Dynamics are suggested to assist with the shaping of phrases. Each chorale can stand alone, as a processional or recessional for special occasions and ceremonies, such as assemblies or parades, or can be performed as one work.
