We've taken 10 tunes from two popular Advance Music publications (Reading Key Jazz Rhythms and The Ramon Ricker Improvisation Series) and asked our writers to give us creative and musically challenging charts that are also playable by young bands. To the normal big band instrumentation of 5 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and rhythm section we've added optional parts for flute, clarinet, French horn, guitar and auxiliary percussion. In addition, each chart is written to sound full with a reduced instrumentation of only 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone and rhythm section. The brass ranges are reasonable with the lead trumpet never going above a written C and the rhythm section parts are carefully notated and thought out. Longtemps considérée comme anonyme, cette mélodie aurait été composée au milieu des années 1820 par Sir Henry Rowley Bishop. Par MCHUGH JIMMY. 'I'm in the Mood for Love' is today a 'standard' song released in 1935. The music was written by Jimmy McHugh, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. The song was introduced by Frances Langford in the film 'Every Night at Eight' and released that year. It became Langford's signature song. Bob Hope, who often worked with Langford entertaining troops in World War II, later wrote that her performance of the song was often the show-stopper. This is one of the most recorded songs out there, from contemporary Billy Eilish to legends such as Luis Armstrong, Vera Lynn and Charlie Parker. The tune started as film music and has later been used in movies such as 'The Nutty Professor' and in “The Spike Jones Show”. Please try to create a 'ballroom' atmosphere around this song. It is possible to expand the solo part with more soloists (45 – 69) and you can choose whether you want to let everyone in part 3 play what is written, or let each one improvise. If you have piano or guitar, you can also let the bass line go together with them and cut out the wind parts. Use the score as a starting point to create an instrumentation that suits your ensemble! (Should some parts only be played by woodwind or brass?) There are quite a few additional notes in the chords. Therefore, balance is very important. Par SPARKE PHILIP. This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This Suite was brought together from two current compositions (movements II and IV), the other two movements were conceived around 28 years ago - originally for solo clarinet and piano - now re-drafted for flute, clarinet and piano. Flute and Clarinet have equal prominence in all movements.
