A Melodrama Interspersed With Music. Par BENDA GEORG. Georg Anton Benda's melodrama „Medea' (1775) was one of the most successful German musical theatre works of the late 18th century. With a libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter, the work soon became a great influence within the melodrama genre. For several decades, it was performed all over central Europe, developing an impressive reception history. Between 1775 and about 1790, the melodrama was considered an extremely popular (albeit controversial) part of musical theatre, in particular in German-speaking regions. Consequently, Benda's „Medea' was at the center of many heated debates.
Unlike opera, the melodrama does not present the libretto in sung form, but rather, the text is spoken and combined with orchestral music and scenes. The traditional opera forms (aria, recitative, ensemble, chorus) are dissolved and replaced by a new interplay of music, speech, and scenes. A focus on a single protagonist and the quick, delicate alternation between spoken text and music allows for the development of conflicting and contradictory psychological profiles with a heightened intensity within the melodrama.
Near the end of his life, Benda revised the work significantly, drawing from his experience of real performances and their effectiveness. The changes leading to the new version of his „Medea' music were quite extensive, affecting almost every single measure: numerous details of the part writing (tempi, voice leading, rhythms, accompanying figures etc.) were revised, the instrumentation was changed, middle voices were led in a more lively manner, and the music as a whole was shortened and effectively compressed. The composer regarded the latter, modified „Medea' as the authorized version of the work. The premiere took place in 1784 in Mannheim, however, the altered work received little attention since then and has become tangible again for the first time with the OPERA Edition. All previous editions of the work - and along with them, all previous recordings - are based on the earlier version of 1775.
The third volume of the OPERA series 'Medea” contains a linen-bound book and the edirom on a USB stick in credit card format. The number of users permitted to simultaneously use the digital content of the edition is not limited.

My Dove, my beautiful one'.
Le prélude musical illustre le paysage - tant visuel que sonore - décrit par James Joyce : 'Strings in the earth and air make music sweet', 'There's music along the river', 'The sighs of harps', 'Soft sweet music in the air'.
Elles se transforment au fur et à mesure en une véritable épopée romantique, expression de la relation passionnelle et charnelle des deux amants : 'Hurry over the dark lands and run upon the sea for seas and land shall not divide us my love and me', 'The odorous winds are weaving a music of sighs'.
The voice of the winter is heard at the door', 'My kiss will give peace now and quiet to your heart'.

Soliste, Choeur Et Orchestre

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Clara Wieck's sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that ; it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano… In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara's wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano andOrchestra. Although Schumann 's genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann 's Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score, including the A Minor Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. All demonstrate his remarkably innovative approach to music, diverting substantially from the classic models of the day, and display his immense creativity as well as his warmth and sensitivity. Included in this collection of Schumann 's compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor, Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstuck, Op. 92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro, Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians, music lovers and students, as well as devotees of Schumann. Full Score. Par BERLIOZ HECTOR. Hector Berlioz (1803–1869), considered the father of modern orchestration, possessed an intuitive musical genius all the more remarkable for his limited formal musical education. A brilliant colorist, a master of the unexpected rhythmic break, he brought a new symphonic richness to Romantic music. Both damned and venerated by his contemporaries — Mendelssohn considered him devoid of talent, Paganini declared him the one true heir to the spirit of Beethoven — Berlioz seems to have sought in music a way to soothe and give voice to the turbulent psychological instabilities and contradictions of what has come to be called 'program music' — i. e. , instrumental music with an extramusical significance. He strove to communicate musically the experiences, psychological themes, scenic description, and literary allusions more commonly associated with the confessional writings of Romantic poets. This Dover edition presents two of the greatest of these 'program' pieces: the Symphonie Fantastique (1830) and Harold in Italy (1834). Here are the full scores of both major symphonic works — painstakingly reproduced from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition, available for the first time in one convenient volume — plus Berlioz's 'program' for the Symphonie Fantastique. Musicians and music lovers everywhere will value this high-quality, inexpensive edition — ideal for study and performance. Versuch eines Requiems. Par HARTMANN KARL AMADEUS. Karl Amadeus Hartmann wrote his first symphony in 1935/36. At that time he was still an unknown musician whose works stood no chance of being performed and who could not hope to find encouragement in his native Germany. He had to wait more than ten years for its first performance, which finally took place in Frankfurt in the spring of 1948 under the direction of Winfried Zillig. I was 21 at the time, and the work left an extraordinarily deep impression on me, an impression that marked the beginning of my
admiration for Hartmann's music and its very special kind of intellectuality, which struck me as both important and significant: by this I mean its spontaneous and unrefracted immediacy, its honesty and straightforwardness – qualities that extend beyond this composer's works and affect his whole surroundings, including his fellow human beings. All Hartmann's works, moreover, contain an essential element of the art of compostion, namely, an exact correspondence between the artist's insistent need to express himself and the instrumental resources that he chooses. A superficial listener might perhaps fail to notice at first that the huge orchestral apparatus that Hartmann conjures up exactly matches his powerful expressivity and the colourful nature of his rhetoric. There is also the expansiveness and physically charged vitality of the native of southern Germany, a man capable of combining his own sense of inwardness with the beauty of the moment and a feeling of hymnic grandeur. It is a combination that reflects his own south German countryside and that answers a need to communicate sustained by his own unwavering faith in humanity.

New Edition of the Complete Works V/5. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously.
Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time.
Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Par MAHLER GUSTAV. Over the years, the need for a new edition of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 became apparent for several reasons. First, many new sources for this work have become accessible since 1970, when Erwin Ratz completed the first critical edition of this symphony, the most significant being Mahler's personal reference score in which he recorded changes to be made (his last entries were made in September 1910). The second reason was the significant strengthening of the editorial standards of the critical edition in recent years. The music is now computer-generated. Previously, changes to the score could be made only by retouching the film of old engravings. Computerization also ensures a concurrence between the score and performance materials. Editorially, the new edition benefits from expanded texts that describe and assess the source materials, document and explain the editors' decisions and provide detailed information on the work's origin, the history of the published scores, performance practices, etc. Over the past five years, Renare Stark-Voit and Gilbert Kaplan, editors of the new edition of Symphony No. 2, have identified, evaluated and analyzed every significant source, and as a result of their work a substantial number of errors has been corrected./ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur et Orchestre

Eine kleine Nachtmusik' '... written with ease, but skillfully refined' 'Eine kleine NachtMusick' is how Mozart entered the Serenade in G major in his personal catalogue of works on 10 August 1787. It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing 'Don Giovanni', a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer. The work is one of the jewels of Mozart's output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting. The manuscript was inaccessible to the public for almost half a century, but now Bärenreiter has received exclusive permission to produce a new facsimile of Mozart's original. The edition reproduces the facsimile pages as individual sheets and leaves, reflecting the way the original copy has survived. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This major concert work cosists o five movements. 1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream. 2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, . . . . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways. 3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone, 80 tribes have vanished completely). 4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound. 5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped. / Niveau : 6 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented...(+)
Piano Et Orchestre

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896). Par BRUCKNER ANTON. Anton Bruckner (b. 4.9.1824, Ansfelden, d. 11.10.1896, Vienna) didn’t have it easy. Throughout his life, the Austrian composer was plagued by self-doubt. Anton Bruckner came from a simple, rural background. After the death of his father, he was accepted as a choirboy at the monastery of Sankt Florian in 1837. After several years as a school assistant and his own organ and piano studies, he first worked as organist in St. Florian, then from 1855 as cathedral organist in Linz. Introduced to music theory and instrumentation by Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler, he discovered Richard Wagner as an artistic role model, whom he admired throughout his life and also visited several times in Bayreuth. In 1868 Anton Bruckner became professor of basso continuo, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory; ten years later court organist; and in 1891 finally honorary doctor of the University of Vienna. He was considered an important organ virtuoso of his era, but had to wait a long time for recognition as a composer. It was not until Symphony No.7 in E major, composed between 1881 and 1883, with the famous Adagio written under the effects of Wagner's death, that he achieved the recognition he had hoped for, even if he was reluctant to accept it given his inclination towards scepticism and self-criticism. Anton Bruckner was a loner who did not want to follow a particular school or doctrine. He composed numerous sacred vocal works, such as his three masses, the Missa Solemnis in B flat minor (1854), the Te Deum (1881-84) and numerous motets. As a symphonic composer, he wrote a total of nine symphonies and many symphonic studies from 1863 onwards, tending to revise completed versions several times over. Bruckner's orchestral works were long considered unplayable, but in fact were merely exceptionally bold for the tonal language of their time, uniting traditions from Beethoven through Wagner to folk music, on the threshold between late Romanticism and Modernism. Anton Bruckner composed about 40 motets during his lifetime, the earliest a setting of Pange lingua around 1835, and the last, Vexilla regis, in 1892. Thomas Doss has compiled some of these motets in this volume for symphonic wind orchestra. These motets show many characteristics of personal expression, especially Bruckner's colourful harmony in the earlier works, which is in places aligned with Franz Schubert (changes between major and minor; and movements in thirds). Later works are characterised by many components which, in addition to the expanded stature of the movements, include above all a sense of the instrumentation as an outward phenomenon and the harmony as a compositional feature that works more internally. Some aspects of Bruckner's work are the result of his long period of study, which familiarised him not only with the tradition of his craft, but also gave him insights into the 'modernity' of his time in such composers as Wagner, Liszt and Berlioz. From this developed his personal standpoint, which always pursues the connection between the old and the new. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie

19 Bände im Versand-Schuber. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Awarded with the German Music Edition Prize 'Best Edition' 2008. Johann Sebastian Bach: Sämtliche Kantaten, Motetten, Choräle und Geistliche Lieder. The complete cantatas, chorales and motets in study editions in 19 volumes. This special edition exclusively offers the authoritative text of the New Bach Edition meeting Bärenreiter Urtext standards. It is well presented on high quality paper and has a durable sewn binding. A MUST for everyone who is passionate about Bach´s music! No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach?s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprising considering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work, or at least re-work an existing one, for every Sunday and festival of the church year, as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations, school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately, not all cantatas have survived. However, over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then. Bärenreiter?s unique edition, which encompasses more than 11, 000 pages, includes all cantatas together with the motets, chorales and sacred songs in the Urtext of the ?New Bach Edition? (NBA Series I and III). As a special extra, the recently rediscovered aria ? Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn ? ihn ? is also included. Only available here is an additional volume with an introduction (German/English) by Christoph Wolff and an index. The Barenreiter study scores are a prime example of how Barenreiter takes a musical text and transfers it into a practical format. The Barenreiter Study Scores, format 16. 5 x 22. 5cm, are ideal for musical analysis, rehearsal purposes and even conducting. The Study Scores are distinguished by high quality paper and binding as well as an excellent layout. In this way masterworks of musical history are made available as compact sized scores at extremely affordable prices! Barenreiter presents the Complete Cantatas, Chorales and Motets in a handy, readable and affordable paperbackformat. The special ediion of 19 volumes (including an index) exclusively offers the authoritative musical text of these masterworks. Clara Wieck?s sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that ?it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano?? In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara?s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano and Orchestra. Although Schumann?s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann?s Piano music are evident in these compositions. Included in this collection of Schumann?s compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor, Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstück, Op.92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro, Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians, music lovers and students, as well as devotees of Schumann. Pianists will be especially pleased to have these appealing Schumann works in one convenient edition available at an affordable price.

Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. After Eclair de lune for three principal snare drums, three ensembles and electronics, and after my Concerto for two violas written for Tabea Zimmermann and Antoine Tamestit, I felt compelled to compose a new work for double soloist, and ended up choosing the piano. First of all from a desire to write for Varduhi Yeritsyan and François-Frédéric Guy, but also because the confrontation between that orchestral instrument, itself duplicated, and a symphonic mass offered me infinite sound perspective options. Though the piano writing contains nothing radically innovative, the profusion of repeated notes (using both instruments and in simultaneity) creates a percussive dynamic timbre ranging from a murmur to a violent surge. Often in echo, most of the time in simultaneity, the two soloists quite simply comprise a meta-instrument, counterpoint being rather absent from this score that favours the collision between energies over the superimposition of lines. As this 22 minute voyage progresses, several thematic elements emerge (tolling in the instrument's low register, virtuosic lines with certain notes doubled and 'frozen' by the orchestra), united by an often static harmony, which imparts a sensation of continuity to this veritable rhapsody. / contemporain / Répertoire / 2 Pianos et Orchestre

Par OSBORNE TONY. A taste of the twenties, a sentimental ballad, a jazz waltz and some funk-rock are brought together in a suite which explores the lighter side of string playing.Drawing on a variety of poplular styles, some less familiar rhythms and bowing patterns, and a fresh harmonic framework, it offers plenty of new challenges for the string ensemble of moderate ability without overstretching the players technically.
