Sara
h Baker is Vocal Composer
in Residence at Education
Music Services, an ABRSM
examiner and a well known
composer of songs and
musicals for primary
schools and massed-choral
events.
All this
experience has come
together in the creation
of this first published
album of piano pieces,
inspired by the sounds
heard at night from the
woodland just beyond
Sarah’s childhood
home.
Suitable for
players of around grade
4-5 standard, her
evocative sound pieces
begin at the tranquillity
of dusk and end with the
exuberant dawn
chorus.
The
composer
writes:
'I grew up
with woods behind my
house, and the nocturnal
noises and images that I
remember were the
inspiration for these
eight short sound
pictures on the theme of
night. The music moves
first from the
tranquility of dusk and
evening mists, to the
emerging starlight of
twilight. As night falls
it takes on on a darker
quality with shadows and
dreams disturbing peace
and calm.The night birds
and bats swoop and flit
past as they seek their
prey, but gradually dawn
approaches and peaceful
sleep is restored. The
morning is heralded in
the joyful exuberance of
the dawn chorus.'.

It's like
the welcome rain on a
quiet spring night that
nurtures the budding
seeds, our new society is
pushing us forward to the
new future. This music
reflects the scenes and
the expression according
to the meaning of the
poem when it's being
unfolded line by line.
Although the tempo is set
60-70 quarter notes per
minute throughout (played
vividly, never slow
down), the tension is
being built up from the
quiet background in the
beginning, to the
sustained climax towards
the end. The musical
image in Rehersal A and B
(measures 1 - 41)
represents the first four
lines of the poem. The
woodwind instruments
response to the rustling
of fast moving notes on
muted string triplets,
decorated by occasional
strokes produced by
metallic string sound and
high piano gestures. The
music in Rehersal C and D
(measures 42-87)
represents the next two
lines of the poem. It's
so dark, a little light
in the boat is shimmering
on the lake... The
breathy key slaps on the
flute creates a
mysterious atmosphere, in
a dialogue with other
instruments. The cello
glissandi recite the poem
in the tone of Mandarin,
echoed by the string
harmonics. The music in
Rehersal E, F, G (m 88 -
161) is a toccata,
starting with the piano,
which builds up a big
shape, to reach the
climax in m. 116, and
keeps the vivid scene
towards the coda
(Rehersal H, m. 162 - the
end), which stands on the
energetic peak at the end
of the
piece. Commissioned by
the Music From Copland
House ensemble, supported
by a grant from the
NYSCA’s
Composer’s
Commissions program in
2002, my mixed ensemble
piece Happy Rain on a
Spring Night is written
for all five instruments
in the ensemble: flute,
clarinet, violin, cello
and piano, and premiered
on Oct. 18, 2004, at
Merkin Hall in New York.
 The musical
imagination came from an
ancient Chinese poem with
the same title, written
by Du Fu (712-770) in the
Tang Dynasty. Happy
Rain on a Spring Nightby
Du Fu (712-770 in the

rain comes in time,When
spring is in its
prime.With night breeze
it will fall,And quietly
moisten all.Clouds darken
wild roads,Light
brightens a little
boat.Saturated at
dawn,With flowers
blooming the
town. (English

This
cycle of carols, to the
poetry of Christina
Rossetti, was assembled
piecemeal over a number
of years, gradually
acquiring a larger
dramatic and harmonic
arch shape as new
settings were added. I
was particularly
attracted to Rossetti's
conflation of the dark,
fallow winter landscape
with that of the soul
waiting for salvation.
The cycle traces the long
nights of watchfulness
before Christmas, with
the great event
constantly deferred, only
glimpsed periodically in
different visions before
the music turns inward
again to contemplation.
The opening carol
embodies this spirit,
with passages of diffuse,
roving harmony
interspersed with
meditative, lyrical
pedals, calling out the
night watch and dreaming
of a far-off summer of
the spirit. Earth Grown
Old is a kind of double
carol, setting two
complete poems, their
lines at first presented
separately as a still,
expectant chorale and a
jubilant dance, then
progressively interwoven
toward a fervent climax
before once again
receding into quiet. In
the bleak mid-winter,
which sets a highly
compressed version of
Rossetti's original poem,
presents an enfeebled
landscape frozen in time,
in dire need of
deliverance. A gentle
melody weaves its way
through static drones,
broken by an angels'
chorus announcing the joy
to come. Love Came Down
at Christmas ends the
waiting, with its gently
falling, overlapping
lines building to a final
revelation, the mystery
of Christmas at last made
real.

The Night Will
Shine as Day was
commissioned by the
Bedford Junior High
Treble Choir under the
direction of Hannah Ware
in 2022. Composed with a
spirit of perseverance
and hopefulness, the text
(paraphrased from Psalm
139) shares a message to
have faith even during
the darkest days, and a
reminder that a light
will always shine through
the darkness if we have
the courage to see
it.Featuring a flowing
piano accompaniment and
lyrical (optional) horn
solo, this piece was
written with an equal
relationship between the
major mode and the minor
mode (as demonstrated by
the alternating piano
harmonies, neither chord
revealing a clear
tonality.) This tonal
obscurity represents the
relationship between dark
and light: a somewhat
codependent relationship
through which the melody
struggles to find
stability. As the
understated chorus
reveals and repeats the
core message of the text,
the melody gains
confidence in its role
among struggle between
light and dark. The piece
concludes with a final
triumph of light over
dark, this time with
harmonic clarity and
hopefulness for the
future.  .

Cats’
Night Out follows the
adventures of a cat as it
makes its big escape to
explore the magical
mysteries that await our
feline friend in the
darkness of the great
outdoors. The opening
line foreshadows the
upcoming movements of our
cat as it experiences a
night outside. The first
movement, On the Prowl,
musically represents the
cat as it roams around
the neighborhood looking
for adventure. The second
movement Mouse Hunt,
melodiously depicts a cat
as it hunts down its
favorite prey the mouse.
The surprise ending
represents the mouse
making his great escape.
This is a truly enjoyable
selection for students
and audiences alike. This
programmatic work is an
excellent choice for your
next concert.
