Little Suite for Orchestra No. 1: Op 53. Par ARNOLD MALCOLM. Malcolm Arnold is one Britain’s best-loved composers. In 1948 he composed a very short suite for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - entitled simply To Youth. Seven years later he took To Youth and made some fairly major revisions, including a complete new movement, and the Little Suite for Orchestra was born. The Little Suite for Orchestra follows a very similar pattern to the later suites for brass band, starting with a bold, strident Prelude, which strangely ends quietly before a lovely, lilting, Dance composed in 3/8 time. Finally a rollicking and militaristic March brings the suite to a conclusion. Par DE HAAN JACOB. A collection of 5 short works in pop style which can be performed by any kind of compilation. The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear. Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale. Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A'). Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here. San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling. Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. The Magical Witch. Par VANNEBO ELISABETH. “The Magical Witch» is a tango covered with Spider web. After an opening like a horror-movie (first in percussion and then winds), a traditional tango starts. The tango is interrupted by the main theme from “Jaws” and then a short sequence from the shower-scene from “Psycho”. The tango then moves on, only interrupted by short, scary features. The dynamics and articulation are very important to underpin the dramatic character of the composition. This tango can be a part of many kinds of concerts, but will be particulary suitable for a Halloween concert. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. This arrangement was written for Norwegian School Band Madlamark Skolekorps to their participation at the Norwegian Championships 2023. The arrangement will work excellent also for a wind ensemble (one player to each part), but the clarinet parts should always be doubled. Euphonium II is optional, but it’s recommended to use also this when there are two players or more on this instrument. Concerning percussion, timpani is the most important part, but it’s recommended to also cover cymbals and mallet percussion. The articulation and dynamics are kept as close as possible to the original version by Dvorak. However, some changes has been made to make it more suitable for a wind instrumentation. The timpani part is identical to the original version except for some places when the trumpet signals are doubled in the timpani part. Staccato notation should not be played short here, but rather separated. At faster passages, the music should be played endurant or legato if possible. These three short chorales (G major, G minor, G major) are excellent warm-up exercises, but would also be very useful for training ensembles to listen for pure intonation. Vibrato and tone quality could also be focused upon, as well as watching the conductor for pauses and upbeats. Dynamics are suggested to assist with the shaping of phrases. Each chorale can stand alone, as a processional or recessional for special occasions and ceremonies, such as assemblies or parades, or can be performed as one work. Independent reading and accurate counting are essential here. Bowing can also be adjusted if desired. / Orchestre A Cordes

Eward MacDowell (1860-1908) was best known for his compositions for piano including his suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, and New England Idylls. Woodland Sketches includes his most popular short piece, 'To a Wild Rose.? This gentle tune is beautiful in its simplicity, and is scored now for concert band in this very playable setting. Spring March is a short, lively, and exciting concert march for beginner bands. With several thematic and humorous elements, this piece is a fun way to work on lightness of style, functional balance, tempo stability, and is perfect for teaching cut time and the traditional march form and structure. There are clear stylistic contrasts between all the different sections of the piece and the beautiful lyrical trio section offers a great opportunity to work on phrasing and support.
