In 1803 Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony and, as is widely known, it was originally in honour of Napoleon Bonaparte. Yet it was published three years later with a dedication to Beethoven's patron Prince Lobkowitz as well as with the addition 'Sinfonia Eroica? in memory of a 'grand Uomo?. This presumably - reflecting the changed political situation - referred to the Prussian Prince Louis Ferdinand who died on the battlefield against Napoleon. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and with a preface by the editor Bathia Churgin, Beethoven's famous heroic symphony is now available as a Henle pocket score. / Orchestre

'His present pieces must convince both connoisseurs and others alike of the unbiased opinion that Beethoven will in time become one of the greatest composers in Europe”, thus wrote Joseph Haydn, when informing the Elector in Bonn on the progress of his pupil in 1793. However, the elector replied that he was already familiar with parts of the Parthia op. 103 that had been sent as evidence of the composer's progress. Beethoven had apparently only reworked an earlier composition. Nevertheless we must agree with Haydn: The Parthia and the Rondo WoO 25 that was originally intended as the final movement provide wonderful evidence of Beethoven's great skill. For every new edition which has appeared during the course of time there have been only two authentic sources to draw upon; the copyist’s manuscript of the score with Beethoven ’s own corrections and the first edition in parts from 1808 which was published in Vienna and which contains a few revisions dated after the aforementioned manuscript. Though no new sources have been available for this new edition, numerous editorial emendations which have prevailed in all previous editions (evenUrtext editions) have now been corrected. Le Rondo en Si bémol majeur de Beethoven ne fut publié que deux ans après sa mort dans un arrangement de Carl Czerny.

On a pu prouver entretemps qu?il s?agissait à l?origine du dernier mouvement du 2e Concerto pour piano op. 19 que Beethoven remplaça vers 1794/95 par le final actuel.

La forte influence de Mozart que l?on décèle dans ce mouvement n?est certainement pas étrangère à cette décision.

Beethoven conserva toutefois sa vie durant le manuscrit autographe du Rondo qu?il estimait particulièrement.

Beethoven?s sacred works include two settings of the Mass. The ?Mass in C major?, completed and premiered in 1807, has been unjustly described as a preliminary step towards the great ?Missa solemnis?. Yet it is a self-contained and, for its time, decidedly modern piece of church music. Drawing on the rich body of sources, Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper suggests practical solutions to the work?s musical and interpretative problems. His deep study of the sources convinced him to include a fully realized organ part in the score, just as Beethoven envisioned it for the first printed edition.
