Tanumshede is situated on
the south western coast
of Sweden.
Archaeologically, it is
renowned for its unique
series of Bronze Age rock
carvings dating from
between c. 1800 to 500
BCE. Incised into over
600 panels, the
petroglyphs were
originally situated along
a 25 mile stretch of
fjord coastline and as
such there are many
depictions of Hjortspring
boats and seafaring
activities. There are
also scenes of hunting,
agricultural and
livestock farming and
warring, with many
armoured figures carrying
swords, axes and shields.
Whilst it is possible
tointerpret most carvings
as images of quotidian
life, the meaning of some
panels is less clear. It
is likely that several
scenes depict ritual acts
overseen by gods, often
surrounded by abstract
symbols - crosses, dots
and ‘cups’,
the significance of which
is now unknown. As well
as being a source of
information about
Scandinavian Bronze Age
weapons, vehicles, tools,
ships, even hairstyles,
the carvings have also
been the subject of
debates about gender. The
society depicted on the
rocks seems
overwhelmingly
patriarchal, making the
rare carvings of probable
female figures
particularly important.
The most famous of these
is known as The Grieving
Woman, apparently weeping
over a dead warrior from
a ship. Her grief,
‘heavy as
rocks’ is heard in
the opening movement of
the piece, echoing
through the remaining
movements and giving the
work its dark, melancholy
character. The Woman
returns in the final
movement as a ghost, her
footsteps coming closer
and closer as her
‘lover’s&rsqu
o; ship is rebuilt over
and over again. Movement
III is gentler in tone, a
song for the Woman and
her lover - depicted as a
couple rolling a giant
sun surrounded by farm
animals. Movement II
represents the enigmatic
Juggler or Calendar Man
who holds 29 spheres in
his hand - perhaps
juggling the fate of The
Grieving Woman.

when I was writing Adieu,
I knew that I wished to
write Angel's Music. The
title existed in an
incomplete form in my
mind and gradually more
and more ideas and a few
outlines became clear.
The actual work on
Angel's Music was started
in Rome, where I spent
the autumn of 1987
staying at The Danish
Academy. Whether this
stay has influenced the
quartet or not is
impossible to say.
however, it is true to
say that, in the Roman
churches I visited, I saw
countless angels playing
in the top of frescoes
and altars. Without these
angels, together with the
many crackled-gold
paintings in this city
and my general
fascination with the
Italian renaissance
painter Fra Angelico, (in
fact there are only a few
paintings by him in Rome,
but even his name..!) I
am not sure my quartet
would have been what it
is. Anyway I do feel that
there is a bit of Italy
in the piece. The angels
apart there are, in the
short rhythmic agitating
part of the quartet,
reminiscences of the
Italian medieval Trotto
dance, and in the most
expressive part of the
piece there are flashes
of Puccini-like music.
From the very beginning
of my work on the
quartet, the distant,
extremely muted sound in
the high register which
opens the piece, was on
my mind. A sound satiated
with a dense heterophonic
and polyphonic texture of
elegiac melody and
vibrating trills. I
imagined that little
songs (maybe angel songs)
could be created in this
density, these songs
constantly echoing
themselves. Gradually as
this sound got a more and
more concrete musical and
instrumental form, I
felt, that not only
should the little songs
be created, played and
die out in an echo, but
also that the general
pattern of the quartet
should give the feeling
of music which, from the
distance, is getting
closer and closer,
culminates and at last
disappears like an echo.
Related to this, the
general pattern of
Angel's Music is divided
into three: a pre-echo,
culmination and echo..
The relationship between
the three part is 5: 6:
4. The reason why I can
say this precisely and
prosaically is that it
was necessary to me to
mark the overall
guidelines before I
started to compose. I had
to do this in order to
enable the relationships
to crawl from the general
pattern almost
fractionally into the
smallest cells of the
music, or more correctly;
crawl from the small
cells into the general
pattern.'.

tells the tale of battle
and reconciliation
between two lands,
deriving themes from the
well-known Scottish song
Ca' the yowes. Horn calls
and pounding drums set
the tone for the battle
scenes while a dreamy
alto saxophone solo
creates an air of
optimism.
This
work was originally
commissioned by Nigel
Boddice for the West
Lothian Schools Brass
Band to play at the
European Youth Brass Band
Championships in 1997
entitled Devolution to
celebrate the setting up
of the new Scottish
Parliament. It appears in
this revised version for
Concert Band with the
title Freedom's Sword.
The opening section
recalls days gone by when
the Scots and English
fought many a battle. The
themes are derived from
the well-known haunting
song Ca' the yowes. The
horn calls and off-stage
percussion sound of a
distant battle and it
gradually comes closer.
The centre section
creates a mood of
reconciliation with a
dreamy Alto Saxophone
solo. The last section
now looks ahead with
optimism and various
bright dance themes
appear based on
traditional Scottish reel
tunes, one of which is a
two-part vocal scat
section The piece then
heads for its conclusion
including a full
statement of the main
theme.

no exception. Here is an
energetic dance set in
the Dorian mode (natural
minor), which gives it

Colonnade
is James
Matheson’s
intriguing response to
the Albany
Symphony’s
commission to create a
work inspired by the NY
State Board of Education
Building, designed by the
renowned architect Rafael
Guastavino. Matheson
explains that “A
colonnade acts as a
metaphor for the tension
between knowledge and
perception. The columns
are the same height and
equidistant from each
other; while the mind
understands this fully,
there exists no place
from which one can
perceive this –
the columns always appear
to be of uneven height
and spacing. If one then
adds motion to
perspective, identical
columns acquire
elasticity, and begin to
change kaleidoscopically
– they shrink,
grow, become closer, and
then further
apart.†This
structural paradox is
given musical life in the
outer sections of
Colonnade, while the
long, arching middle
section is inspired by
the vaulted ceiling of
one of the
building’s largest
rooms, enhancing the
structure’s
spacious openness and
lightness. Colonnade
is inspired by
Albany’s majestic
New York State Board of
Education Building, and
written on a commission
from the Albany Symphony
Orchestra. It was an
intriguing task, in part
because in order to
accept the commission I
had to agree to write a
work “inspired
by†a building I
had not yet seen.
Thisproblem was
compounded by the fact
that, for me, the very
notion of extra-musical
inspiration is a complex
one, particularly with
respect to literary or
visual sources. I
generally find ideas and
abstracted notions more
generative of musical
ideas than specific ones
(a poem, an experience, a
painting). So when I went
to seeand tour the
building, I sought to
identify fundamental
formal aspects of the
building which I could
process into musical
ideas, and would then be
linked to the building
through a sense of formal
relationship. In theend,
two characteristics of
the building stood out as
noteworthy and
undiminished by time
(compared with, for
instance, the
building’s
rotunda, which contains a
series of quaintly
outdated allegorical
paintings): theexterior
colonnade and a beautiful
interior vaulted ceiling,
designed by Rafael
Guastavino.For me, a
colonnade acts as a
metaphor for the tension
between knowledge and
perception. We all know,
for instance, that the
columns are of the same
height and are
equidistant from each
other. Nevertheless,
while the mind
understands this fully,
it is also the case that
there exists no place
– no standpoint or
viewpoint –
anywhere in the universe
– from which one
can perceive this; the
columns always appear to
be of uneven height and
spacing. If one then adds
motion to perspective
– a walk along the
colonnade, for instance
– the fixed, even,
rigidly identical columns
acquire elasticity, and
begin to change
kaleidoscopically
– they shrink,
grow, become closer, and
then further apart.
Further, the detail of
the building’s
façade behind the
colonnadeshifts into and
out of visibility, with
different portions
obscured by the columns
from each vantage point.
These considerations
underlie the outer
sections of Colonnade, in

– suggestive of a
column –
dominates. The iterations
of this elastic,
evolvingfigure are
interspersed with other
music – suggestive
of the building’s
façade. The second
feature of the building
that caught my attention
was the vaulted ceiling,
designed by Guastavino,of
one of the
building’s largest
rooms. The ceiling
enhances the spaciousness
of the room, giving it an
openness and lightness
that is quite
captivating. The middle
section of Colonnade has
this openness at its
core, and is dominated by
long, arching lines that,
to me, suggest the
refined beauty of this
