Broadly speaking, Gabrieli?s contributions to collective anthologies fall into the following categories: 1) celebratory compositions, in several cases conceived as individual contributions to madrigal cycles by various composers in honour of more or less prominent Venetian or other personalities; 2) compositions originating in social and cultural circles close to Gabrieli; products of the composer?s habitual interaction with patrons, poets and musicians in mid sixteenth-century Venice, these compositions are published in anthologies containing similar works by other composers in Gabrieli?s milieu; 3) individual madrigals inserted in generic multi-author anthologies. Vol. 10/I features eight compositions on texts in Latin, Italian and ?stradioto? dialect (a linguistic concoction in which words of Greek origin appear against a background of simulated Venetian dialect). These include Gabrieli?s contribution to a Corona of nine sonnets by various composers on the death of Annibale Caro, the celebrated man-of-letters whose production comprises a highly successful Italian translation of Virgil?s Aeneid. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for. In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. Created in 1851, 'Ride of the Valkyries' is the prelude to the third act of the music drama 'The Valkyrie'. The purely instrumental version soon found its way onto the concert stages and turned out to be a first-rate attraction. Apart from 'Treulich geführt', 'Ride of the Valkyries' probably is Wagner's most popular melody.More intimate insights, however, are given by 'Siegfried-Idyll'. In 1870, Richard Wagner came up with a rather special birthday present for his wife Cosima. This wonderful arrangement of the second movement from Mozart's Symphony #17 is an excellent piece for developing ensembles to learn about the stylistic nuances of Mozart. Arranged by Steven Campbell in G major and set in common time, younger musicians will find the setting very accessible. In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously. Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time. Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Shortly before Norway’s National Day (May 17th), the band in which the composer played the Euphonium, purchased four trombones. At that time, trombones was not very common in Norwegian amateur bands. Among the many new works by Vivaldi discovered in recent years are not merely works completely unknown previously, but also ones that had already been noticed but for a variety of reasons were set aside. This is the case with the violin concerto RV 817, which has come down to us via a copy lacking the name of its composer. A reexamination of it in the light of the system of “musical concordances” - the great schema of Vivaldi’s reuse of thematicmaterial - has permitted its attribution to him without any further doubts and its recognition as one of the virtuosic concertos of his full maturity. Intended for his pupil and advocate Georg Pisendel, the concerto reflects a predilection for doublestopping and the exploration of the ultra-high register common to the works written for him. I had written the Cadman Requiem in 1989 for the Hilliard Ensemble in memory of my friend and sound engineer Bill Cadman, who was killed in the Lockerbie air crash. His death affected me very deeply and, pending a recording of this piece, Manfred Eicher asked if I might like to develop an instrumental work from this, using the same instrumentation for accompaniment and retaining the same opening bars as part of a new ECM album. The piece is 'after' the Requiem therefore in the musical sense of being based on it, in the chronological sense of following on from it, and in the spiritual sense of representing that state which remains after mourning is (technically) over. I wrote the piece in Venice in September 1990 and finished it in Oslo on the day of the recording, where I added the electric guitar of Bill Frisell. This, I felt, blended particularly well with low strings (2 violas and cello). Coincidentally, having used certain distortion effects on the guitar, we found that we were recording on the twentieth anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix. Within the music I use one or two modified extracts from the Cadman Requiem itself, and from its common source Invention of Tradition, for which Bill Cadman had done the sound design.
