Trois poèmes d'Henri Michaux was written for the Zagreb Biennale and first performed there by the orchestra and choir of Radio Zagreb, conducted by the composer and Slavko Zlatic on 9 May 1963. It is composed for 20-part choir and an orchestra similar to that of the Symphony of Psalms, though without the lower strings of the latter.Lutoslaswski has said that the general outline of the work came to him first, and only then did he choose the three poems. These reflect his Francophile taste: Henri Michaux was born in Belgium in 1899 and later became a painter: the trenchant Le Grand Combat, with its onomatopoeic invented words, dates form the 1920s- the other two texts, which are more philosophic than pictorial, form the 1930s. Choir and orchestra need separate conductors even though throughout they alternate more often than they combine.A description of the course of the music itself will be more useful than any discussion of its technical processes or of its notation. A quiet section of orchestral polyphony, which brass sforzandi punctuate with increasing frequency, frames the beginning and end of Pensées. After the choir's first unaccompanied passage, the woodwind have a staccato section over which the female voices, singing downward glissandi, are superimposed ('Ombre de mondes infimes?'). Then the woodwind and both pianos join in a lapping ostinato which illustrates the text of the next forte choir entry 'Pensées à la nage merveilleuse?' The climax of the movement comes as these characteristic woodwind figures alternate with the tintinnabulation of a gamelan-like ensemble of vibraphone, céleste, harp and pianos. / Orchestre

A Melodrama Interspersed With Music. Par BENDA GEORG. Georg Anton Benda's melodrama „Medea' (1775) was one of the most successful German musical theatre works of the late 18th century. With a libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter, the work soon became a great influence within the melodrama genre. For several decades, it was performed all over central Europe, developing an impressive reception history. Between 1775 and about 1790, the melodrama was considered an extremely popular (albeit controversial) part of musical theatre, in particular in German-speaking regions. Consequently, Benda's „Medea' was at the center of many heated debates. Unlike opera, the melodrama does not present the libretto in sung form, but rather, the text is spoken and combined with orchestral music and scenes. The traditional opera forms (aria, recitative, ensemble, chorus) are dissolved and replaced by a new interplay of music, speech, and scenes. A focus on a single protagonist and the quick, delicate alternation between spoken text and music allows for the development of conflicting and contradictory psychological profiles with a heightened intensity within the melodrama. Near the end of his life, Benda revised the work significantly, drawing from his experience of real performances and their effectiveness. The changes leading to the new version of his „Medea' music were quite extensive, affecting almost every single measure: numerous details of the part writing (tempi, voice leading, rhythms, accompanying figures etc.) were revised, the instrumentation was changed, middle voices were led in a more lively manner, and the music as a whole was shortened and effectively compressed. The composer regarded the latter, modified „Medea' as the authorized version of the work. The premiere took place in 1784 in Mannheim, however, the altered work received little attention since then and has become tangible again for the first time with the OPERA Edition. All previous editions of the work - and along with them, all previous recordings - are based on the earlier version of 1775. The third volume of the OPERA series 'Medea” contains a linen-bound book and the edirom on a USB stick in credit card format. The number of users permitted to simultaneously use the digital content of the edition is not limited. (+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

Par PURCELL HENRY. Purcell Dido and Aeneas (Full Score, paperback) The opera ?Dido and Aeneas?, a recount of the well-known story from Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid, has established itself as a favourite with the public. This is due to the skill of composer Henry Purcell and his librettist Nahum Tate, who combined an overriding tragic theme with masterfully inserted comic episodes. Long believed to have been conceived in 1689 for a performance at a ?School for Young Gentlewomen?, scholars have debated the origins of ?Dido? in recent decades, a process hampered by the lack of early musical sources. This edition addresses these challenges and evaluates the earliest sources that reproduce the opera in its surviving form. Surprisingly, these date from the 1770s and 80s, some ninety years after the work was written. Three key manuscripts ? now held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (UK), at Tatton Park Library which is a National Trust property near Manchester (UK), and at the Wakayama Prefectural Library (Japan) - were all copied from the same original, most likely a handwritten score from 1704 which reappeared in the early 1770s, only to disappear again. This is the first 'Dido' edition based on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source. It was produced during the second half of the 18th century by Philip Hayes, one of England's most prominent musicians. He was known in musicology for his meticulous copies of Purcell's music, often from the autograph manuscripts. The Bodleian and Wakayama manuscripts are presented in a new light and their role in this edition has been reassessed accordingly. - Urtext edition based for the first time on the Tatton Park manuscript as the main source - Informative Foreword (Eng/Ger) on the genesis, transmission, reception and performance practice - Complete facsimile reproduction of the Chelsea libretto / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur Mixte et Orchestre

Symphonie dramatique. Par BERLIOZ HECTOR. Romeo et Juliette Op. 17 Hol. 73: Symphonie dramatique For his third symphony ; Romeo et Juliette (1839) Berlioz turned to his greatest literary passion, Shakespeare, drawing once again on his own most fervent experiences. Berlioz's discovery of Shakespeare in 1827 had been overwhelming not only for the dramatic force of the poetry and drama, but also because the leading actress of the company, Harriet Smithson, immediately won his heart. She later became his wife. He began to think seriously about composing some kind of musical ; Romeo and Juliet but it was not realised until 1839. The symphony is scored for doublechorus (to represent the two warring families), solo voices as secondary characters, with the lovers themselves represented by the orchestra. Par MIRANDA LIN-MANUEL. It was really fun to make an arrangement on these three great melodies from Encanto! Here, the band will be able to work with latin rhythms, syncopation (which doesn't rush) and with possible solo elements on the melody. Use your imagination and feel free to re-arrange to let your musicians shine. (Example: bar 27 and onwards can be performed as a duet) All three songs can be played separately. They have different degrees of difficulty and if the band lack the ability to perform the last melody, you can easily stop before that. 1. 'We don't talk about Bruno' (1-55) benefits greatly from having a Guiro saying 'go-ap tsh tsh'. This piece can be stopped by playing to the end of bar 54. If you want to play this piece only, you can easily extend it, by repeating from 27, perhaps with other soloists? 2. 'Surface Pressure' (55-116) If the cowbell-part is not played, percussionists have to play these two weak beats in 56. The groove for drum set is also very important from 68. Also, that you get a proper swing feeling on 84- 98 and that the drummer in 99 really goes back to even eighths. If you want to extend this piece, you may repeat from 84. If you want to end after this song, you can insert a ritardando 2 bars before 116 and preferably add a quarter note high G, then a quarter rest, and then a darker G. Another possibility is to repeat from 84 and then stop at the first note in 100. 3. 'The Family Madrigal' can of course also be played alone. This is truly a song that gets people clapping! I have chosen to make the opening rhythm a little easier by adding an eighth note to the one (120) If the ensemble has a very good understanding of rhythm, it can be skipped, but then the only tone in the phrase that is on the pulse beats will be the quarter note in the second measure. You can start the piece straight on bar 120 without the drum intro. If you want to extend this piece, you can repeat 152 – 199. (Or you can go all the way back to 136) If you do so, you can perhaps skip the first house at the end, if the audience is not standing on the chairs dancing Have fun performing this arrangement! The Movie Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, led by a matriarch (Botero) whose children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz)—receive magical gifts from a miracle that helps them serve the people in their rural community called the Encanto. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening, and save her family and their magical house. Encanto premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021 The film received critical acclaim for its characterization, music, animation, voice acting, emotional depth, and cultural fidelity; reviews named magic realism and transgenerational trauma as the film's core concepts. Publications have described Encanto as a cultural phenomenon. The film was nominated for three awards at the 94th Academy Awards, winning Best Animated Feature, and received numerous other accolades. The film's soundtrack also became a success, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Compilation Albums charts; 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' and 'Surface Pressure' were its two most successful songs, with the former topping both the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart for multiple weeks. Par DE HAAN JACOB. The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one, and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion, ” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together. ” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals. ” His vision is rejected, and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury, ” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep, ” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In the second movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world. ” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast, which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. She then populates the earth by giving birth to an enormous race. Original Version. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Schumann’s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann’s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 – a piece he actually called a ‘Concertstück’ – removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer’s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków. This Full Score matches the separately available edition for Cello and Piano (EP 73488). Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann’s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Cello and piano edition available separately from Edition Peters: orchestral parts available for rental Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton Robert Schumann’s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann’s original conception of the work – not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann’s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann’s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann’s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann’s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ‘My ultimate wish,’ says the editor, ‘is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character – one that is lighter and happier, even “cheerful”, as Schumann himself described the work.'/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Orchestre

Nymphea Reflection is a work by renowned composer Kaija Saariaho, arranged for String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Schleswig Holstein Festival, it was first performed on the 16th of August 2001 in Elmshorn, Germany by Sinfonietta Cracovia, conducted by John Axelrod.Saariaho states that the starting point for Nymphea Reflection came from the idea of arranging her string quartet Nymphea. Originally working on a straight arrangement, she eventually realised that this would be very difficult, and she'd need to find a new way of composing that particular piece of music. She designed a formal concept for each of the six sections, imbuing them with very different characters. Her simulation of electronic processing by means of orchestration is an innovative take on a new form, while the effect of the poem by Arseniy Tarkovsky, whispered by the musicians gives a haunting new perspective to both music and words. / Orchestre A Cordes

Par PAUSET BRICE. 'Sleeping Beauty', one of the most famous of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, has been the object of numerous analyses, commentaries, and renditions of all sorts. Its motifs, typical of the genre (pact, numeral symbolism, destiny, curses, enclosed space) abound in the crude and concise text from the 1812 version, the one I chose from among the seven versions spanning 1812 to 1857. The themes of suspended temporality (the entire castle deeply asleep) and fragile beauty are less common, but musically very inspiring. The instrumentation being used (string quartet, double-choir and orchestra) is treated as a composite derived from opera. The principle theme is distilled in the solo string quartet, the double-choir is assigned the narration, while the orchestra is entrusted with numerous descriptive elements designed to transpose the real action: ascending the stairway, spinning, etc. Of course, specific situations will put this lovely construction into peril. In the context of my work on 'critical exegesis' with regards to the stage, this project is an attempt to create music that in itself satisfies a large number of the demands normally present in the operatic setting: characters, action, movement, singing, dramaturgy, scenography, décor, lighting, etc. It is not a question of inventing new metaphors, but rather, of managing to transcribe the phenomena used in the Grimm Brothers' fairly tale with purely musical classifications and objects, rich with associative images: thus a music of situations and phenomena, more than of representation. Two sections of the piece were already composed for double-choir in a preparatory form (Zwei Studien über Dornröschen composed in 2007). The whole, amounting to about 25 minutes, is divided into 9 'scenes' equivalent to the interpretations of transitional moments in the Grimm Brothers' story: 1. '...keine Kinder...' 2. die Feen 3. '...alle Spindeln abschaffen...' 4. '...ein Wunder von Schönheit...' 5. Der alte Turm 6. '...Eine alte Frau... 7. Stich und Schlaf 8. Dornen und Kuss 9. New Version 1994. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. Symphony No. 6 was created in the late 1960s, and was first performed in Havana on 26. November 1969 by the Cuban National Orchestra under my direction. This symphony reflects not only the excited atmosphere of awakening during those years but also my efforts to include in the composition the large number of new human and artistic stimuli that I experienced at that time. So the banjo starts to play a Vietnamese song of freedom ('Stars in the Night'), later the first bars of Mikis Theodorakis hymn of freedom is heard. The second movement is based on the poem 'Fe de erratas' (errata sheet) by Miguel Barnet. In the original version, the three parts of the symphony merge without interruption. In the revised version, I separated them to make it easier for the audience to register the caesuras which are also internal caesuras as regards content. Apart from strengthening the string sound, the most significant alternation in comparison to the first version is that I fully composed all of the 'aleatoric' passages and pitches which originally were to be freely improvised as was the fashion at that time. Thus I wanted to free them the realm of chance and indeterminacy and to bring them back into my artistic control. - Hans Werner Henze/ Répertoire / 2 Orchestres

Par WEILL KURT. Kurt Weill developed his creative energies mainly within the world of musical theater, where he proved to be an immensely productive and imaginative innovator, but he also left behind a small body of work for the concert hall. The Concerto for Violin and Wind Orchestra op. 12 dates from the spring of 1924. Scored for two flutes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, one oboe and trumpet, percussion and four contrabasses, the concerto comprises three movements. While composing the work, Weill informed his publisher: 'I am working on a concerto for violin and wind orchestra that I hope to finish within two or three weeks. The work is inspired by the idea - one never carried out before - of juxtaposing a single violin with a chorus of winds.' The specific character of Weill's concerto as music written for chamber orchestra (with an often soloistic treatment of instruments) leads to a transparency that requires utmost precision in the ensemble playing. In the quest for an overall sonic balance, the coarser-sounding wind instruments need to explore all dynamic nuances. The solo part is challenging not only from a technical standpoint but also from an acoustic one (it is crucial to make the violin 'sound'). In spite of these challenges - or precisely because of them - critics in the 1920s called the solo part highly idiomatic and extremely rewarding. Since then the concerto has become a 'modern classic' in concert halls around the world. (Elmar Juchem, August 2010)/ Répertoire / Violon et Orchestre d'Instruments à Vent

a 6 et a 8. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. The Serenade in E-flat, K. 375, exists in two versions, one for two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, and another for the same forces plus two oboes, forming an octet. From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first, six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl, it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October, the name-day of St. Theresa. The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextetwith the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics, he also altered the work's melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre, thereby enabling him, for example, to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets. The opportunity arose to divide melodic phrases among the clarinets and oboes or to make them more brilliant and incisive by doubling them at the unison or octave. - Urtext of the New Mozart Edition - Parts sextet version (BA5333), octet version (BA5334) and study score both versions format 22. 5 x 16. 5cm (TP315) available for sale/ Répertoire / Partition de Poche

Full Score. Par BERLIOZ HECTOR. Hector Berlioz (1803–1869), considered the father of modern orchestration, possessed an intuitive musical genius all the more remarkable for his limited formal musical education. A brilliant colorist, a master of the unexpected rhythmic break, he brought a new symphonic richness to Romantic music. Both damned and venerated by his contemporaries — Mendelssohn considered him devoid of talent, Paganini declared him the one true heir to the spirit of Beethoven — Berlioz seems to have sought in music a way to soothe and give voice to the turbulent psychological instabilities and contradictions of what has come to be called 'program music' — i. e. , instrumental music with an extramusical significance. He strove to communicate musically the experiences, psychological themes, scenic description, and literary allusions more commonly associated with the confessional writings of Romantic poets. This Dover edition presents two of the greatest of these 'program' pieces: the Symphonie Fantastique (1830) and Harold in Italy (1834). Here are the full scores of both major symphonic works — painstakingly reproduced from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition, available for the first time in one convenient volume — plus Berlioz's 'program' for the Symphonie Fantastique. Musicians and music lovers everywhere will value this high-quality, inexpensive edition — ideal for study and performance. Three of his finest are presented here in full score, including the A Minor Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. Early Version Of 1844 And Late Version Of 1845. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. Replaces BA 9050- The orchestral parts are unchanged and continue to be available as BA 9050-65/-74/-75/-79/-82/-85 Mendelssohn' s Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première- the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim- and Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David- now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn' s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter' s correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard' s playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice. - New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs - Revised Urtext edition - With a separate booklet on performance practice (Eng/Ger)/ Répertoire / Violon et Orchestre

Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir (Lord God, we praise Thee all of us) BWV 130 Cantata for the Feast of St. Michael Composed for Michaelmas, 1724, Bach's cantata 'Herr Gott dich loben alle wir' belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which uses a hymn, as perhaps various preachers also did, to interptet the ideas of the Biblical texts. The hymn used here, composed by Paul Eber in 1554, has twelve stanzas. Texts for two recitatives and two arias were written to go with each of stanzas 2 to 10. Bach used the first stanza as a processional, and the last two stanzas were made into a concluding chorale withthe original text. - Urtext of the New Bach Edition/ Répertoire / Partition de Poche

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. J. S. Bach ’s Four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach ’s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721. Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the “New Bach Edition”. At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter’s new edition of Bach’s great four suites nowpresents the Urtext as found in the “New Bach Edition” i. e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a “Violino concertato” part. - Urtext editions of these important works. - Newly engraved parts and fully realized continuo. - For the first time an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 with “ Violino concertato ” is included. - Full scores, study scores and performance material available for sale./ Répertoire / Partition de Poche

Musique A Grande Vitesse (MGV ) translates as 'high speed music' and was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North European Paris-Lille line in 1993.The piece runs continuously, but was conceived as an abstract, imaginary journey- or rather five inter-connected journeys, each ending with a slow, mainly stepwise melody which is only heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination.Thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole. Throughout the piece ideas - rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, motivic, textural - constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'.The opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9, 11, or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and a harmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally, MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic, syncopated figure (again first heard over C, E and A) begins the second section, featuring Brass, in D flat. The topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning, description or timetables. The piece's tempo changes and unpredictable slowings down bear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey, while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso, with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno, was resisted: more suitably the band (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs. / Orchestre

Mass in Time of War. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Haydn was in England, in 1795, when he received word from his new Prince, Nicolaus II Esterházy, that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed, and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister, except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose, every year, a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria, which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church, and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion, and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt.
