Minor: Triads. Par ORFF CARL / KEETMAN GUNILD. Carl Orff devoted much of his life to the development of a philosophy of Music for Children, based on his belief that music is the natural outcome of speech, rhythm and movement. His ideas and pioneering work have had a major influence on music and dance education throughout the world and today that work continues under the guidance of leading teachers and educators in many countries.
The five basic German volumes of 'Music for Children' by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman were published between 1950 and 1954. Edition have since been published in Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Ghana, Great Britain (including a special Welsh edition), Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin-America, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the USA.
In 1952 the first edition in translation appeared, an English language adaptation by Doreen Hall and Arnold Walter for their Canadian and American students.
A few years later, Margaret Murray independently developed a version (1957-1966), essentially to fulfil the needs of United Kingdom teachers.
Inevitably the considerable growth of Orff-Schulwerk in the United States led to the publication of the American Edition (1977) to satisfy the requirements of a different educational system and national heritage.
Orff-Schulwerk: Music for Children has proved itself to be a stimulating source of material for music teaching. Carl Orff's fundamental educational ideas have revitalized music education in nursery schools, at all levels of primary and secondary education and in special music schools, based on the concepts that: - music, dance and language are inter-related and animated through rhythm. - when children discover, invent, improvise and compose, their experience of music is intensified. These creative activities are complementary to those of interpreting and listening to music. - all who take part are encouraged to contribute, not only vocally but also instrumentally. - the Orff approach to music education is many sided; it is concerned with practical music-making, it provides fundamental experiences and it lays the foundation for a comprehensive musical training. - movement games and activities for body awareness in space, time and flow, lead to movement improvisation and dance forms. - music and dance have been notated in many different ways in history. Various ways of writing down sounds and music, as well as playing from and interpreting different kinds of sources are being explored.
Today, countless teachers and institutions are using these ideas. More and more teachers look for ways of invovling their students in active music making. In particular, they seek to challenge their pupils' creativity by the use of music, dance and speech - as media of human expression - as a foundation of all education.
A prerequisite for work in Orff-Schulwerk is the artistic and pedagogical training of teachers. The Orff Institute was founded in 1961 as a Department of the 'Mozarteum', in Salzburg, Austria. Training offered includes a four-year diploma course, a two-year post-graduate course, and a one-year-course in English.
At the opening of the Orff Institute in Salzburg in 1963, Carl Orff ended his speech with a quotation from Schiller: 'I have done my part, now do yours.' That challenge has been taken up by teachers worldwide.

Par MIRANDA LIN-MANUEL. It was really fun to make an arrangement on these three great melodies from Encanto! Here, the band will be able to work with latin rhythms, syncopation (which doesn't rush) and with possible solo elements on the melody. Use your imagination and feel free to re-arrange to let your musicians shine. (Example: bar 27 and onwards can be performed as a duet) All three songs can be played separately. They have different degrees of difficulty and if the band lack the ability to perform the last melody, you can easily stop before that. 1. 'We don't talk about Bruno' (1-55) benefits greatly from having a Guiro saying 'go-ap tsh tsh'. This piece can be stopped by playing to the end of bar 54. If you want to play this piece only, you can easily extend it, by repeating from 27, perhaps with other soloists? 2. 'Surface Pressure' (55-116) If the cowbell-part is not played, percussionists have to play these two weak beats in 56. The groove for drum set is also very important from 68. Also, that you get a proper swing feeling on 84- 98 and that the drummer in 99 really goes back to even eighths. If you want to extend this piece, you may repeat from 84. If you want to end after this song, you can insert a ritardando 2 bars before 116 and preferably add a quarter note high G, then a quarter rest, and then a darker G. Another possibility is to repeat from 84 and then stop at the first note in 100. 3. 'The Family Madrigal' can of course also be played alone. This is truly a song that gets people clapping! I have chosen to make the opening rhythm a little easier by adding an eighth note to the one (120) If the ensemble has a very good understanding of rhythm, it can be skipped, but then the only tone in the phrase that is on the pulse beats will be the quarter note in the second measure. You can start the piece straight on bar 120 without the drum intro. If you want to extend this piece, you can repeat 152 – 199. (Or you can go all the way back to 136) If you do so, you can perhaps skip the first house at the end, if the audience is not standing on the chairs dancing Have fun performing this arrangement! The Movie Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. It follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, led by a matriarch (Botero) whose children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz)—receive magical gifts from a miracle that helps them serve the people in their rural community called the Encanto. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening, and save her family and their magical house. Encanto premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021 The film received critical acclaim for its characterization, music, animation, voice acting, emotional depth, and cultural fidelity; reviews named magic realism and transgenerational trauma as the film's core concepts. Publications have described Encanto as a cultural phenomenon. The film was nominated for three awards at the 94th Academy Awards, winning Best Animated Feature, and received numerous other accolades. The film's soundtrack also became a success, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Compilation Albums charts; 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' and 'Surface Pressure' were its two most successful songs, with the former topping both the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart for multiple weeks. Par FELDMANN WALTER. Commissioned by the Ensemble Intercontemporain In 1989 I first discovered the writings of Anne-Marie Albiach. H II linéaires especially impressed me, on the one hand through the sensual presence of the words, and on the other hand, above all, through the spatial disposition of the typography. This is a form of writing which has nothing to do with all that has existed before it. This impression was the starting point for a creative work which has since become a kind of a project to which I will dedicate myself throughout my life. Since that time of my first discovery (in which hundreds of pages of sketches and a published excerpt of a score of a syntagma have been composed, namely « monstrueuse vécut dans le cadre » la mémoire) I have attempted to develop a new musical system that encompasses all the parameters of composition. All of these works which I have composed are independent from this enormous project, but at the same time they form the experimental laboratory for the all-encompassing musical system towards which I am working and developing: a new system of determining pitches, metre, dynamics, musical diction, manner of performance, etc. With « monstrueuse vécut dans le cadre » la mémoire it appears that the research for this project has been concluded. After the two large cycles « Les Géorgiques » on texts from Claude Simon and « Tristram Shandy » from Laurence Sterne, both employing techniques from my work with Albiach’s texts, I could finally compose this work, which was originally conceived for voice and 6 instrumental groups – the system was mastered, so to speak. Anne-Marie Albiach’s establishes the genetic code for the piece, without the words having to be spoken. . Her text is, in the true sense of the word, measured from one syntagma (syntactical element), from one void (space) to another, and this results in temporal structures of ensemble texture. This is opposed to another texture, which is the temporal measurement of a recitation of the text by the author: her voice, using the range of her/ Répertoire / Alto Solo, Grand Ensemble en 6 groupes: 1) Contreb

Farewell to philosophy. Par BRYARS GAVIN. I have a great fondness for the lower string instruments: I am a bass player, my mother is a cellist, as are both my daughters; my own ensemble includes two violas, a cello and a bass, and for the instrumentation of my opera Medea I omit the entire violin section from the orchestra. As I have written a number of works for solo instrument or voice with orchestra I welcomed the opportunity to write a concerto for cello and orchestra and especially one which focuses particularly on the instrument’s lyrical qualities. Although the piece is in one continuous movement, and the soloist is playing almost without a break, it nevertheless falls into distinct sections which are recognisable by a shift of tempo as well as by a change in the music’s character.
One of the early ideas Julian Lloyd Webber and I discussed was that it might form a companion piece to one of the Haydn concertos. Given my friendship with some members of the English Chamber Orchestra and my awareness of their repertoire, this suggested a number of particular musical references. The subtitle to the work, for example, combines the subtitles of two idiosyncratic Haydn symphonies and I allude to them in different ways but chiefly through orchestration: for The Philosopher by including a section in the concerto where the orchestration resembles that of the symphony’s first movement (pairs of English and French horns, muted violins and unmuted lower strings); for The Farewell, by the progressive reduction in the orchestration towards the end. Indeed, apart from the orchestral tutti in the last few bars, the last pages of the score are virtually for string quartet. The subtitle also refers to my own background as a philosophy graduate...
The piece was commissioned by Philips Classics for Julian Lloyd Webber and is dedicated to him.
The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Judd, 21 November 1995, Barbican Hall, London.

Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Haydn Symphony No.69 in C major (Laudon) (Hob.I:69) (Full Score) Letters of the composer have come down to us only on a few of Haydn’s symphonies, amongst them the “Laudon” Symphony Hob. I:69. In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets. Also, the symphony requires two bassoons, but no flutes, corresponding with the available musicians at the court of Esterházy between 1775 and 1776.

Although I never had any 'official' lessons with him, Heinz Holliger has become and will always remain a lifelong teacher to me. And we have developed a friendship that started 10 years ago, in Davos, where he heard me playing Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke Op. 73 for the first time. Since then, we have performed together countless times, stood on (and behind) the stage, discussed, philosophized, made jokes. May this exchange never cease! The next occasion will be the World Première of my Oboe concerto which I dedicate to him in sincere friendship. Jörg Widmann / Hautbois Et Orchestre

Par SORENSEN BENT . When it comes to titles, almost all the works I have composed have found their title before or at the same moment I started them. That is why it was also surprising - not to say transgressive - for me that my work for 9 instruments for Ensemble MidtVest was completely untitled until the last bar. Then it dawned on me that the titlelessness was a natural result of the music's volatility. It was - and is - as if the music was constantly escaping from itself. The beginning of the work is definitely an escape into a new chapter, and that feeling runs through the entire work.
In a longer section, the music flies towards a Barcarole, where the piano has a soloist role, and this is probably a result of my recurring dream of Venice - the gondolas in the swaying rhythms of the canals. Hence the Italian title, 'Fuggitivo' - fugitive.
The work was composed for and commissioned by Ensemble MidtVest with support from the Danish Arts Foundation. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par BALAZS ARPAD. Television viewers of nearly a hundred countries have experienced Árpád Balázs's touching melodies. The series of cartoons have neither dialogue nor text: the music presents the amiable and entertaining adventures of the rabbit with chequered ears and its friends. Balázs has rephrased and developed the well-known melodies and as a result a ''children's story symphony'' of seven movements has been created in which, in contrast with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, there is no narrator but the instruments themselves represent the story-tellers. The composer has again associated the groups of instruments with one another in a colourful and varied manner, skilfully alternating the modes of solo, chamber orchestra and orchestra.
Movements I, II, IV and VII represent a ''short suite'' that can be independently performed, thus due to its duration of four minutes and easier level, ensembles with more modest opportunities can also perform it. The most well-known parts of the cartoon series music - the main title and the ending - are included in both versions./ Répertoire / Concert Band

This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. Par PART ARVO. This piece is Pärt's tribute to Benjamin Britten who died in 1976. Arvo Pärt: In the past years we have had many losses in the world of music to mourn. Why did the date of Benjamin Britten's death - 4 December 1976 - touch such a chord in me? During this time I was obviously at the point where I could recognize the magnitude of such a loss. Inexplicable feelings of guilt, more than that even, arose in me. I had just discovered Britten for myself. Just before his death I began to appreciate the unusual purity of his music - I had had the impression of the same kind of purity in the ballads of Guillaume de Machaut. And besides, for a long time I had wanted to meet Britten personally - and now it would not come to that.
'The last chord of Cantus is seemingly never-ending. It just stands there, neither growing nor decaying. Something has been achieved and it shouldn't be given up. The content of the whole work leads up to this point.' Nora Pärt/ Répertoire / Orchestre à Cordes et Cloche

Par . Here we present 'Griffenfeldt», a folk-dance in the style of a Norwegian «reinlender». This arrangement can be used as the first item in a concert, or after an interval. The musicians can come on stage as they join in. That is why two of the measures are notated 'repeat till ready', here you have to wait until everyone is in place! If everyone is ready from the start, the repetition can be omitted. Be sure to play with a bouncy but singing style, not with short and harsh articulations. Do the trills on the beat, but these can also be omitted if it makes it too difficult. To bring out the folk music style a little extra, you can ask the musicians to play on the 'backbeat', i.e. emphasize the last half of each quarter-note. In addition, the music will really come to life if all 'solo' places are done standing up. The musician Ånon Egeland tells this story: «This song got its name from a party where it all just got a bit too lively: one of the party-goers started shooting into the ceiling with a gun just as this reinlender was being played. The fiddler - or was it the man with the gun? - was called Griffenfeldt, and that gave the name for the song.» / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

Par YE XIAOGANG. 'Datura was commissioned by Accessible Contemporary Music and was written in a unique way. I composed the piece in installments over the summer of 2006 and emailed them to Seth Boustead who forwarded them on to the ensemble. In this unique way of working I was able to have time between each installment to think about what would come next and to get feedback from the performers about the music. This is a very new and different way for a composer to work. Usually I write the piece in solitude and then hand it to the performers but writing in installments allows more communications between the performers and the composer and allows the audience to hear the piece as its created.
Datura is another series of pieces composer written about Asian plants and flowers. Datura is a very common houseplant in south China and very beautiful but it can also be used as a hallucinogen, usually with unpleasant results. In this piece the composer juxtaposed the other beauty of the plant with the intense inner would it can create by using alternately tranquil and intense musical passages.' Full Score. Par BERLIOZ HECTOR. Hector Berlioz (1803–1869), considered the father of modern orchestration, possessed an intuitive musical genius all the more remarkable for his limited formal musical education. A brilliant colorist, a master of the unexpected rhythmic break, he brought a new symphonic richness to Romantic music. Both damned and venerated by his contemporaries — Mendelssohn considered him devoid of talent, Paganini declared him the one true heir to the spirit of Beethoven — Berlioz seems to have sought in music a way to soothe and give voice to the turbulent psychological instabilities and contradictions of what has come to be called 'program music' — i. e. , instrumental music with an extramusical significance. He strove to communicate musically the experiences, psychological themes, scenic description, and literary allusions more commonly associated with the confessional writings of Romantic poets. This Dover edition presents two of the greatest of these 'program' pieces: the Symphonie Fantastique (1830) and Harold in Italy (1834). Here are the full scores of both major symphonic works — painstakingly reproduced from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition, available for the first time in one convenient volume — plus Berlioz's 'program' for the Symphonie Fantastique. Musicians and music lovers everywhere will value this high-quality, inexpensive edition — ideal for study and performance. Reprint of Nos. 1 and 3 of Serie I, Symphonien (1900), of Werke von Hector Berlioz, Breitkopf and Härtel, Leipzig, 1900–1910. Breitkopf & Hartel edition./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Air pour l'orchestre. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. In October of 1997, I received an invitation from New York Philharmonic Music Director Kurt Masur asking me to contribute a musical message for the coming millennium. Maestro Masur's letter read 'My dream would be to have you provide us with a work lasting from 10 to 15 minutes that could both stand on its own or perhaps be combined with musical messages with other composers which we might compile for a full evening's concert.'
I welcomed the opportunity to bring one of six unique perspectives to this collective exploration of the meanings of the new millennium, and it is my hope that the Multi-Arts Production Fund will chose to support the New York Philharmonic's 'Messages for the Millennium' project. My Millennium Message, Fraternité, Air for Orchestra, can best be described as a quiet and placid work in which all the instruments of the orchestra are as one ... and sing in praise of harmony and peace.

Solo for Oboe or Violin. Par BACRI NICOLAS. The title only appears frivolous to those who have lived little. With the passage of time, the seasons that pass, the differences in quantity and quality of light, of temperature and weather, become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes, incredulous and wondrous, events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth, our blossoming, our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless, everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman, initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto, this time with Lisa Batiashvili, that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with, each time, a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico, l’automne’, whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind, hence the ‘Concerto amoroso, le printemps’, was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years, it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux, with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’, created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude, with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer, the ‘Concerto luminoso’, which took on this role’./ Répertoire / Orchestre
