Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'I can?t remember when another work made a more lively, beautiful impression on me? ? this is what a very enthusiastic Felix Mendelssohn wrote to Niels Gade in January 1843. On March 2nd he premiered Gade?s C minor Symphony at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. On 26 October of the same year the 26 year old Danish composer conducted the second performance himself and in the following year he was engaged as co-conducter of the Gewandhaus concerts. His first symphony, however, was to remain Gade?s greatest success: unique are its colourful instrumentation, atmospheric melodies and the characteristic sound world which we know as Nordic. This volume presents Gade?s opus 5 as volume I.1 of the Complete Edition ?Niels W. Gade / Works?, edited by Finn Egeland Hansen. Dramatic Poem. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. 'Kalanus”, a 'dramatic poem for soloists, choir and orchestra” op. 48 was composed between June 1867 and March 1869 and is based on a text by Carl Andersen. A historical event during Alexander the Great's Indian campaign (326 AD) serves as the origin of the material: Alexander met Indian philosopher Kaljana, referred to as Kalanos in ancient sources. Gade had originally intended to unite the composition with 'Korsfarerne” (The Crusaders) (1866), and another work with Jewish-historical content in 'a type of trilogy”, however, he later abandoned his plan and 'Kalanus” remained in its singular form. The reception of the work was predominantly positive in regard to the music, while form and subject received a somewhat reserved response./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Dramatic poem for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. Gade composed the cantata ?The Crusaders? op. 50 for soloists, choir and orchestra (termed as ?Dramatic Poem? in the original print) in the summer of 1865; it was premiered on 24 April 1866. Together with the cantatas ?Kalanus? and ?Zion? written later, the work constitutes, in Gade?s understanding, a ?kind of trilogy? which centers on different manifestations of the ?longing for the true light?. The libretto of ?The Crusaders? by Carl Andersen is based on motives from Torquato Tasso?s ?Jerusalem Delivered? and spreads these over three sections which themselves are subdivided multiple times: I In the Desert ?
