'Half-Past Two' is a rock piece for young band intended to reinforce and deepen the students' understanding of dotted quarter/eighth note rhythms, providing a vehicle for this concept that is fun and memorable for both students and audiences. The title is both an homage to time-inspired rock songs ('25 or 6 to 4,' 'Rock Around the Clock,' 'Midnight Hour,' etc. . . .) and a nod to the concept being taught---placing a note halfway past beat two. A craftsman-like and gracefully wrought work in which the middle movement is particularly fine, a wistful slow waltz of lovely simplicity which begins and ends with a tranquil dialogue between the two unaccompanied violins. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including 'The Earle of Oxford's Marche' and 'Wolsey's Wilde.' Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures---dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options---are continually changing. Bravo! Electronic Music Design: Robin Meier Triades is a work in concertante form for solo double bass, an ensemble of twenty-one musicians and live electronics. This piece belongs to a larger cycle for double bass begun in 2013 with Nicolas Crosse, double bassist and soloist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain. The poetic universe of this project was taken directly from Solaris, Stanislas Lem's science fiction novel written in 1961. Solaris is a planet, that orbits around two suns, with a surface entirely covered by an ocean of protoplasmic matter, presenting an absolute enigma for the scientists who have been studying it for almost a century. The ocean creates gigantic formations on its surface that scholars have given names based on their shapes and distinctive features: Longus, Mimoids, Agilus, Vertebrides, Symetriades, Asymetriades... Triades follows in the continuity of these monstrous creatures endowed with phenomenal activity and prodigious dynamics surpassing anything imaginable by the human spirit. Every gesture made by the soloist, every timbre resulting from the heightened energy coming from the double bass, is related to a characteristic type of transformation. Digital software reacts to the soloist's physical actions on the instrument in real time. After electronic transformation, the sound is amplified through a large network of loudspeakers and subwoofers positioned in dome-form to surround the audience. This setting literally plunges the audience into a realistic experience of submersion. Triades is dedicated to both Nicolas Crosse and Robin Meier, without whom this sonic universe would never have been so amply developed. My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition of a harp and celeste, and lasts around 17 minutes. Although the work sets out to explore the lyrical characteristics of the solo instrument, it is only gradually that the violin finds its full, lyric voice, and thence, as the work progresses, a more dominant role. This, in one sense, is the 'journey' of the piece.The work's straightforward formal scheme consists of three movements (roughly fast-slow-fast) framed by a reflective introduction and epilogue. However, these formal divisions exist within a single, unbroken arc. Such an overall symmetrical shape places the slow Arioso (itself divided into three subsections) at the midpoint, sandwiched between the two Allegro movements. The dramaturgy of the piece centres on a twofold search. First there is the ongoing pursuit to 'recapture' the simple melodic material stated by the solo violin - accompanied by the harp's bass register - during the opening bars. Whilst aspects of this melody are invoked frequently throughout (especially in the violin cadenza which closes the Arioso movement), it is only with the final and most important climax of the work that the melody appears again in its complete form, now accompanied by violent, orchestral stabs. The second search is for a tonal resting place, the arrival of which is delayed until the close of the epilogue.The original version of the Violin Concerto, commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, was premiered in Amsterdam in February 2012 with Gordan Nikolic as soloist.
