epoch-making Overture to
A Midsummer Night's Dream
has been performed on the
basis of a more than
dubious transmission.
Neither the first edition
of the parts (1832), and
certainly not the print
of the score based on
these parts (1835) go
back directly to the
autograph of the
17-year-old composer,
which is now located in
Krakow. No wonder, since
Mendelssohn had breezily
given away his original
at an early date. The
result: during his
lifetime, versions were
published with his
authorization, even
though they were full of
unintended
inconsistencies. Yet the
autograph of 1826 is
unequivocal: it is clear,
practically free of
irregularities and
diverges considerably
from the corrupted
printed version.

above all with logical
and compositionally
compelling performance
instructions, laying bare

I
simply can't say it
better than the Doc
himself. Read what he
says about the Pivot
System, then grab some
samples, then a physical
book shipped right to
your home above. From the
Forward During the
initial or formative
years of a player's
career, he acquires the
mechanical habits which
determine the extent of
his development
invariably by pure
chance. If he happens to
be numbered among the few
fortunate ones who
unconsciously utilize
their physical factors to
advantage, eventually
someone will mistakenly
refer to him as being a
'natural' or 'born with
it.' If, as is more
likely the case, he
happens to be one whose
physical factors clash or
function incorrectly, he
inadvertently seals his
own fate. Either he can
give up shortly after
high school as most do,
or he can continue down
the blind alley of his
own circumscribed
potential. Most of these
unfortunates merely
resign themselves to a
career of mediocrity ('I
never had the chops'),
shying away (rom the
'lead book' in favor of
second, third or fourth
parts. A few (even worse)
go on mouthpiece jags or
scavenger hunts for no
pressure systems, etc. ,
always seeking, but never
finding the 'gimmick'
which will 'straighten
out my chops.' Some,
however, after a thorough
analysis, adopt the
scientific principles
which utilize every one
of their playing factors
with maximum efficiency.

The
Reformation cantata Ein
feste Burg ist unser Gott
BWV 80b, published by
Carus-Verlag for the
first time in a practical
performing edition,
remained unknown to Bach
scholars until well into
the 20th century. The
evidence of its existence
is three fragments of the
first folio of Bach's
score, which can be dated
to the years 1728-1731.
By contrast, the
long-familiar expanded
new version of the
cantata with its powerful
opening chorus (BWV 80)
dates from the 1730s or
1740s. It only survives
in a copy of Bach's
score, but this allows
conclusions to be drawn
about the history of the
versions; thus, by using
the fragments mentioned
above, it has been
possible to reconstruct
the first version. This
result is a Bach cantata
which is less extensive
and in a more concise
normal format, with
reduced wind instruments.
A relaxed, contrapuntal
four-part chorale
movement with the first
and last verses of the
Lutheran hymn forms the
framework, and the other
movements are the same as
in the later new version.
This simpler cantata is
also entirely suitable
for celebrating
Reformation Day, as Bach
did around 1730. Score

The
Hida High School is in a
highland city called
Takayama in Gifu
Prefecture. Takayama City
has some of the highest
mountains in Japan,
atmospheric rows of
houses and streets, and a
beautiful landscape. The
magnificent views from
these mountains can be
described as a paradise
above the clouds. When
the composer visited
there in the summer of
2001, the lovely flowers
spreading through the
valley and the refreshing
air welcomed him. The
flowers looked as if they
were fashionably dressed
and fully enjoying
conversation and a short
summer at a reunion
party. The composer was
inspired by this scenery
to compose this piece.
The musical party opens
with happy greetings of a
reunion andjoyful themes
follow one after another.
A light xylophone solo, a
waltz and an adagio
featuring alternate solos
by alto saxophone,
euphonium and trumpet
lead to a brilliant
finale featuring brass
and percussion played in
irregular time. A
beautiful musical picture
that your band will enjoy
performing for many
years.
