While
composing Serenata, Jan
Van der Roost didn't
focus too much on
virtuosity, acrobatics or
spectacle. Instead, he
wanted to let the solo
instrument shine as a
melodic and expressive
voice. And indeed: the
warm sound of the
euphonium touches the
heart of the audience
straight away in the
first section with a
melodious theme. Then
follows a rigaudon, a
noble and elegant dance
from the Renaissance era.
Despite the fact that
some of the variations on
the main theme require
some technique and
agility, the overall
character mostly remains
songful. The composition
as a whole builds further
on these two musical
ingredients, but thanks
to a clever alternation
of melodic and technical
passages, it offers a
nice stylistic diversity
to the listeners. The
band is definitely not
'just accompanying' but
fully participates and
begins a dialogue with
the soloist: both musical
partners have their say.
The end is more
spectacular and sonorous,
giving an extra boost of
energy to the soloist as
well as the band in a
grand finale!

Persian bamboo flute),
Ranjbaran aims
not only to highlight
the modern
flutist’s ability
to play agile and
brilliant passages, but
also to emulate the
delicate sound of the
Ney, particularly in
extended solo passages.
The three-movement
27-minute concerto was
commissioned by the
Philadelphia Orchestra
for its principal flutist
Jeffrey Khaner. The
piano reduction
(published separately)
was designed by the
composer to be practical
in
recital performances.
CONCERTO for Flute and
Orchestra has been
recorded for Naxos by
Érik Gratton
with the Nashville
Symphony conducted by
Giancarlo
Guerrero. The
melancholic tone of the
Ney (the Persian bamboo
flute) is known for its
alluring sound, emulating
the human voice. Â In
Persian literature, the
Ney is considered a
mystic instrument capable
of expressing deep human
emotions.In writing my
flute concerto, I aimed
not only to highlight the
modern flautist’s
ability to play agile and
brilliant passages but
also to emulate the
delicate sound of the
Ney, particularly in
extended solo flute
passages.Two prominent
characters permeate the
first movement of my
concerto. Â They are
marked in the score as
lamentoso, and con
spirito, expressing grief
and loss, and joy of
living respectively.
 The lament is mostly
expressed in several
extended cadenzas for
solo flute while the con
spirito consists of
robust and energetic fast
sections played by all
forces of the orchestra.
 Apart from these two
characters there are
moments of mystery,
comedy and the grotesque,
among others.In the
second movement, the
lyrical and poetic
character of the flute is
prominently presented in
dream-like passages
surrounded by shimmering
and tender orchestral
colors. Â The solo
flute is left out in an
agitated middle section
that references the first
movement. Â In the
third section of the
movement the solo flute
returns in meditative
fashion culminating in a
duet with the harp.The
third movement is written
as one continuous quasi
scherzo, challenging the
limits of agility and
brilliance of the flute.
 Some of the materials
from the earlier
movements are presented
again with joyous
character. Â The coda
elevates the concerto
into its brightest and
most festive character,
driving to the end with
relentless energy.

Marc Douyon was inspired
by the very diverse music
of Spain. This colorful
and engaging work uses a
triplet rhythm that
prevails throughout much
of the composition. The
music starts with an
ambiguity of keys between
major and minor, and
subsequently travels to
different keys. The first
two sections are
military-like, and
feature the melody mostly
in the left hand. The
middle section is
relatively calm with
melodic fragments played
over an ostinato-like
figure in a sequential
fashion. The fourth
section features
idiomatic Spanish rhythms
reminiscent of the
Andalusian region of
Spain. Here, melodic
fragments are played over
a relentless bass
accompaniment.

The text
of the piece was inspired
by a conviction that the
deepest meanings of
Advent/Christmas are
alive and meaningful
throughout the year. At
the heart, the text is a
prayer. Musically, the
piece affords a great
opportunity for each
voice section to take
turns sharing the melody.
Though mostly homophonic,
a countermelody is
introduced first by the
piano, and then reappears
in the alto line midway
through the piece,
providing a nice contrast
both texturally and
lyrically. The piece
builds to a dramatic
climax in the final
verse, and then scales
back down for a
contemplative finish.
This piece works
especially well in the
season of Advent and
Christmas, though it's
themes resonate and would
be appropriate throughout
the church liturgical
year.

Strauss (1864–1949),
the composer of
large-scale operas and
tone poems, also wrote
lieder throughout his
life. His entire oeuvre
stretching over a period
of 78 years is framed by
lied compositions: the
Weihnachtslied dating
from December 1870 (the
secondentry in the
chronological catalogue
of Strauss's works) and
the lied Malven written
in November 1948
(StraussÂ’s last
completed composition).
His lied compositions
include lieder with piano
accompaniment, genuine
orchestral lieder and
subsequent
orchestrationsof original
lieder with piano.
Strauss frequently
conducted his own operas
and orchestral works and
also gave public
performances ofhis lieder
both as pianist and
conductor. As was
customary in the concert
practice of the time, he
combined lieder with
larger-scaleworks: it was
not uncommon for tone
poems and lieder to
appear on the same
programme. Music
publishing houses were
active in the
dissemination of Strauss
lieder across the world:
in the first prints, the
early lieder were
published in their
original register, mostly
only with German texts,
but numerous editions
were subsequently issued
for other vocal registers
or with additional texts
in English, later also in
French, Italian and
Russian translations. The
broad spectrum was
rounded off by
arrangements of lieder
(such as purely
instrumental piano
arrangements by Max Reger
and Walter Gieseking),
arrangements and
orchestrations by other
composers andlieder
albums containing
collections of Strauss
lieder not ordered
chronologically according
to their opus numbers.
The fact that Strauss is
to this day one of the
most frequently performed
composers is not only due
to his operas and tone
poems, but also his
lieder, particularly the

monumental anthology in
four volumes comprising
nearly two hundred
compositions by Italian,

Austrian composers chosen
by Clementi in his
combined role of editor
and, in some cases,
arranger. Above all, the
double and self-evident
destination for organ and
piano, in itself not new
but nevertheless not so
frequent, since it deals
with a choice of
compositions mostly
concerning the so-called
stile osservato. The name
of each instrument is
printed on the same line
and in the same font. If
then, we add to this that
an appropriate number of
pieces is taken from what
can more correctly be
called the harpsichord
repertoire, the anthology
acquires what could be
described as a
distinctive and even more
interesting
‘keyboard
eclecticism’.
