'Still Falls the Rain' is perhaps Edith Sitwell's greatest poem. Maconchy set the poem for double choir, unaccompanied, with some antiphonal writing. The recurrence of the phrase 'still falls the rain' throughout the poem is echoed in the music and helps to give shape and coherence to it. After the impassioned and tragic character of the main part of the poem, it ends on a calmer, even hopeful note (the Dawn after the Night raids perhaps). It was commissioned by the Chelmsford Festival and first performed there on 22 May 1985 by the BBC singers, conducted by John Poole, in Chelmsford Cathedral.

From program notes by Christina Dahl: Schoenfeld has described his Three Intermezzi (for Piano Solo) as one of a very few works he has written simply to please himself. In his words, 'Here is music my hands feel like touching with sounds my ears enjoy perceiving.' Its three movements were written at different times, but coalesced into a single work. The Three Intermezzi explore an interior world devoid of anything ostentatious. Schoenfeld's signature counterpoint--echoing both Bach and Brahms--is evident throughout. The music is intimate, serene and contemplative. 'It's the sort of music I improvise at night with the lights out and the house empty,' he says. The first Intermezzo quotes a bit of a Bach prelude, then develops it in waves and spirals that course up and down the keyboard. The second Intermezzo emerges from a single repeated note into an oscillating minor third and finally into a dark and soulful Sicilienne. The third Intermezzo, as long as the other two combined, explores the boundaries where decidedly crafted music and mediation combine..

When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. Four Imaginary Landscapes from Basho for violin and piano was commissioned by Concert Hall Shizouka. This work consists of four pices which can be performed independently. Three pieces: 2. Spring (Petal by petal fluttering down yellow mountain roses-, Sound of the rapids.) 3. Summer (The summer grass-, holding still the dreams of the stalwart warriors.), and 4.
