It was inspired by a new generation of solo guitarists whose extraordinary technical and virtuosic skills have paved the way for a new understanding of instrumental performance practice. Detailed explanations are given for the instrument's technical potential within the historical context of traditional guitar technique. From 1991 to 2000 he was a permanent member of the Ensemble musikFabrik. Today he lives in Berlin. Ming Tsao (b. Berkeley, CA, 1966) is professor of composition at Gothenburg University. Sables reprend certains des partis pris d'Altitude 8000, en les poussant plus loin: absence d'événements ponctuels (aucun son percussif), continuité extrême (aucun silence, si ce n'est au début de la pièce...). Les notes sont considérées comme de simples 'grains de sable' dont l'accumulation va créer des formes, des 'dunes'. La pièce n'est pas encore véritablement spectrale, mais utilise déjà des phénomènes de résonance naturelle. La note de programme écrite à l'occasion de la création précise: 'Le système harmonique utilise les seuls points de référence objectifs... qui sont les résonances naturelles et le bruit blanc, symbolisé par le cluster. La trame harmonique est en évolution permanente: il n'y a pas à un moment donné 'une harmonie', mais un processus de transformation harmonique qui est en cours... Le parti pris non événementiel entraîne qu'il est impossible de distinguer des parties distinctes. On peut seulement considérer cinq régions séparées par des moments où le (les) processus d'évolution se renverse(nt). Tout est soumis à cette règle: trame harmonique, orchestration, densités, intensités, architecture à un moment donné. Toutefois les processus en cours dans chaque ordre de phénomène ne sont pas nécessairement concomitants, et il existe des processus 'croisés'... Le principe de continuité entraîne une écriture 'microcosmique': les notes n'ont pas d'importance par elles-mêmes. Shostakovich's eleventh symphony is highly programmatic, a large-scale tribute to the 'victory' of the Great October Revolution of 1917, composed on the 40th anniversary of the occasion. The first of the four movements is called The Palace Square, setting the sombre scene where the violent events of the day would occur, and Shostakovitch includes two Russian prison songs. The second movement, The Ninth of January, pictures the workers' march through the streets and their slaughter. In memoriam is the title of the third movement, a pensive requiem, and in the last movement, The Tocsin, the spirit of revolt returns, with militant songs and a triumphant, percussive finale. Chapel Music is a work of celebration to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Alice Millar Chapel and Religious Center at Northwestern University. The texts are drawn from a variety of religious and secular sources. The work opens with a processional, with the sopranos leading the chorus through the hall to the stage. A brass quintet is positioned offstage throughout the piece before rejoining the orchestra in the final movement.
