The 31 kilometer (19 miles) long beautiful Thien Duong Cave or Paradise Cave lies in one of Vietnam’s national parks and was not discovered until 2005. Composer Jan de Haan visited this unearthly looking place. The grandnessand astounding splendour of this natural wonder made such an impression that it inspired him to write this composition. He experienced Paradise Cave as art, albeit formed by nature across millions of years. Back home, he renderedthe imposing experience in music. This resulted in a colourful and spectacular concert work for fanfare band. Paradise Cave is dedicated to the World Music Contest (WMC).

De 31 kilometer lange, prachtige Thien Duong-grot (oftewel Paradise Cave) , gelegen in een van de nationale parken van Vietnam, werd pas in 2005 ontdekt. Toen componist Jan de Haan deze buitenaards aandoende plek bezocht, maaktende grootsheid en adembenemende pracht van dit natuurwonder zo veel indruk op hem dat hij zich ge nspireerd voelde om dit werk te schrijven. Hij beleefde Paradise Cave als kunst, maar dan in miljoenen jaren gecreëerd door denatuur. Thuis zette hij zijn indrukwekkende ervaring om in muziek, wat resulteerde in een kleurrijk en spectaculair concertwerk voor fanfareorkest. Paradise Cave is opgedragen aan het Wereld Muziek Concours (WMC).

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and fanfare band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en fanfare maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire!

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

Op de gedenksteen in het Friese dorp Wons staat een erelijst (roll of honour) gegraveerd ter nagedachtenis aan de gevallenen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De titel van dit werk verwijst naar deze lijst. Deze compositie is echter tevens geschreven voor alle mensen die Wons hebben gemaakt tot wat het nu is: een prachtig dorpje vlak bij het IJsselmeer waar het prettig toeven is. De compositie begint met een statige inleiding, waarin het dorp zich presenteert aan de luisteraar. Dan klinkt een aansprekend ritmisch thema in een snel tempo dat de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid van voor de oorlog uitstraalt. Dit gaat over in een melodie in mineur, die het naderendeoorlogsgevaar aankondigt. Dan is er een grillig thema met stops waarin het schieten van de soldaten te horen is. Dit eindigt in enkele dissonante clusters die het tragische dieptepunt van de oorlog accentueren. De daaropvolgende stilte lost op in een gedragen middendeel in mineur waaruit enerzijds verdriet en anderzijds troost spreekt. Dan komt het snelle tempo van het begin weer terug, ditmaal in de vorm van een vreugdemars. De vrijheid wordt gevierd. Ook het thema van de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid is weer te horen. Er volgt nu een statig martiaal thema, een eerbetoon aan het dorp, waarna het werk wordt afgesloten met feestelijke klanken.

Auf diese bezieht sich der Titel des Werkes, der wörtlich übersetzt ‘Ehrenliste’ bedeutet. Diese Komposition wurde jedoch für alle Menschen geschrieben, die Wons zu dem gemacht haben, was es heute ist: ein schöner Ort nahe des IJsselmeeres, in dem es sich gut leben lässt. Das Werk beginnt mit einer feierlichen Einleitung, in welcher sich das Dorf dem Zuhörer präsentiert. Dann erklingt ein reizvolles rhythmisches und temporeiches Thema, das die Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit vor dem Krieg ausstrahlt. Ce monument a inspiré le titre de cette composition. Mais celle-ci a aussi été écrite pour toutes les personnes qui ont donné Wons son caractère d’aujourd’h ui : un joli village proche du lac d’IJssel où il fait bon vivre. La pièce débute par une introduction festive qui présente le village l’auditeur. S’ensuit un thème allègre et délicieusement rythmique qui reflète l’ambiance joyeuse, na ve et optimiste de l’avant-guerre. Puis nous entendons un motif sombre et fragmenté, représentant les fusillades ciblant les soldats. Cettepartie se termine par un faisceau de sons dissonants traduisant le caractère tragique de la guerre. Le calme revient avec un passage tranquille en mineur qui évoque la fois la frustration et l’apaisement. Le tempo du début est repris, cette fois sous la forme d’une marche victorieuse. Puis résonnent les accents premiers de gaieté, d’innocence et d’insouciance, invoquant la célébration de la liberté. Un thème martial et festif en hommage au village nous mène un pétillant finale.

As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

Die Partita, seit Jahrhunderten ein fester und beliebter Bestandteil der Orgelliteratur, besteht aus einer Anzahl Variationen zu einer Choralmelodie. Für seine Partita Piccola nahm sich Henk van Belcum die deutsche Hymne Wunderbarer König als Vorlage. Die Partita Piccola besteht aus vier Variationen und einer Choralbearbeitung, die auch einzeln für den Gottesdienst verwendet werden kann.Auf eine würdevolle Eröffnungsfanfare folgen neben der Choralbearbeitung Variationen zu einem Kanon Pachelbels und zu Händels Sarabande. Abgerundet wird das Werk schließlich durch eine festliche Courante. Die Partita Piccola ist eine Bereicherung für den Gottesdienst und dieKonzertbühne.

As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.
