Despite the
numbering, the overture
Leonore No. 2 was
Beethoven's first effort
to precede his only opera
with an adequate
introduction. It had been
composed last minute and
in between the rehearsals
for the premiere of the
opera Leonore oder Der
Triumph der ehelichen
Liebe (Leonore, or The
Triumph of Marital Love)
on 20 November 1805 at
the Theater an der Wien.
This comprehensive,
programmatic work was met
with incomprehension at
first performances just
like the opera itself.
Beethoven felt compelled
to re-write Leonore
completely and presented
it under its new title
Fidelio. In 1806 he
revised the overture to
such an extent that a
symphonic sonata movement
emerged; with another
incorrect numbering,
Leonore No. 3 has gone
down in music history and
above all it has achieved
a regular place in
concert repertory. And in
order to complete the
confusion: written in
1806/07, only Overture
No. 1 is Beethoven's
chronologically last
effort to write an
overture for Leonore,
before he - many years
later - put an end to
this infinite subject
with the so-called
Fidelio overture for the
third version of the
opera. After all, thanks
to the search after a
dramaturgically
convincing beginning of
the opera, the music
world has been enriched
by four quite different
orchestra scores.The
music text of the present
score is based on Volume
11 of the Supplements to
the Complete Edition. The
performance material of
the Fidelio and Leonore
No. 3 overtures is
available in Breitkopf

This volume
presents partly less
known, but undoubtedly
interesting and highly
welcome additions to the
chamber music repertoire
for violinists and
cellists in the reliable
Urtext of the Complete
Edition. The violin was
Sibelius's instrument. He
was active as a violinist
mainly during his studies
at the Helsinki Music
Institute from 1885-1889
and for a short time
thereafter. The present
volume contains Jean
Sibelius's opus-numbered
works for violin or cello
and piano, 36
compositions in total.
Most of the works of this
volume were created at
the beginning of the 20th
century and remained
unpublished until the
early 1920s. Sibelius
composed far less music
for the cello than for
the violin. Malinconia
(Op. 20), published in
1911, remained his only
opus-numbered work
exclusively for cello and
piano. This volume also
includes Two Pieces (Op.
77) and Four Pieces (Op.
78) as versions for
violin with piano and for
cello with
piano.

Whoever is
looking for orchestral
works in several
movements by Sibelius
before the seven
officially numbered
symphonies will run into
Kullervo op. 7, as well
as Lemminkainen op. 22.
Sibelius follows a
cyclical concept in these
four tone poems, so that
Lemminkainen, owing to
its time of origin, can
truly be labeled as his
Symphony No. Zero. The
previously unprinted
early versions, presented
in the respective volume
of the Complete Edition
for the first time, can
be dated to the year
1895/96. The first
revision was made in
1897, after the world
premiere. Only after this
premiere did Sibelius
write his First Symphony
before he again revised
the Lemminkainen scores
some of them much later
and had them
published.

Mendelssohn
's ConfessionThe
Reformation Symphony,
misleadingly numbered
posthumously as 5 by its
publishers, was
Mendelssohn's first
confrontation with the
large symphonic form in
Beethoven's wake. Linking
it conceptually with the
300th anniversary of the
Augsburg Confession in
1830 seems to have first
occurred late in the
progress of its
composition, yet the
premiere did not take
place until 1832 and
ultimately even enabled
the composer to distance
himself completely from
his work and its concept.
Thanks to access to a new
source [or, ... new
access to sources... or
...new access to a

can now finally refute
the legend that a
separate original or
early version of the
symphony once
existed.

Rameau’s third

“Hippolyte et

“Castor et

multi-facetted music it
represents quite a high
point of this genre. Its
performance history is
remarkable in that within
only five years two
clearly different
versions were being
performed.
The new
critical edition by Denis
Herlin for the first time
offers the possibility to
reconstruct the version
of May 1744 in addition
to the version of 1739.
Also, the Appendices
include the complete

the version of April

could not be heard since.
Last but not least the
changes of the successful

This

contains all the purely
instrumental numbers of
the opera in their
various versions. Apart
from the preludes and
ritornellos, these are
above all the diverse
dance numbers.

Stra
uss's first tone poem
distinguishes itself from
all other subsequent
orchestral compositions
in its existence in three
different versions. Even
among the operas and
other compositions in his
hand there is no other
work with a comparable
history of origin and
publication. What is
more, the final version
of Macbeth is the only
valid form of the work
and the only variant with
further sources (cf.
Critical Report) in
addition to the autograph
score. In contrast, the
second version has only
been preserved in an
autograph score and
autograph piano reduction
(the orchestral parts
which must have existed
have obviously not
survived). This was never
printed and was replaced
by the published third
version. The two
surviving versions should
therefore not be
considered to be of equal
status. Unlike the case
of Ariadne auf Naxos in
which the earlier version
was for a time the sole
valid alternative and was
yet never completely
displaced by the soon
dominating later version
of the opera, only the
final third version of
Macbeth is considered as
valid. Right from the
outset, it was a matter
of course for the editors
of the present volume to
include the second
version as a first
publication (in addition
to the above-mentioned
surviving pages of the
first version), albeit in
different forms. The
surviving pages of the
first version are
reproduced in facsimile
and the second version,
as a subordinate form of
the work, appears
alongside Strauss's piano
reduction in a modified
source edition, i.e.
without intervention on
the part of the editors.
The ultimate third
version is published as a
full edition (please
refer to the Critical
Report for further
details). In order to
facilitate a comparative
study of the second and
third versions, the
relevant page numbers of
the score are placed
opposite one another (the
autograph piano reduction
of the second version is
included at the end of
the music section of the
volume). The editors hope
that this synoptic
representation will
prompt interest in
further studies on
Strauss's art of
orchestration: a field of
research which has still
remained insufficiently
examined. A study of
Macbeth namely
illuminates as clearly as
could be wished how much
significance Strauss
allotted to sound
alongside form. The
subjects were not merely
intended to generate an
individual figure, but
also specific tonal
colours, and the
instrumentation was
simultaneously designed
to provide an optimal
communication of
thematic-motivic texture
to the audience. The 'new
path' threw up
consequences which caused
Strauss a considerable
amount of difficulty. He
was however a fast
learner and had already
swum free with Don Juan
and all the more with Tod
und Verklarung.

The new
scholarly-critical
edition of the score of
Rameau’s
“ballet
hroïque†Les
Indes galantes finally
clears up its convoluted
source history. At the
first performance, on 23
August 1735, it consisted
of a prologue and three
acts: Le Turc gnreux, Les
Incas du Prou and Les
Fleurs. But Les Fleurs
already proved
controversial in the
early performances, and
from 11 September of that
same year it was given a
wholly new form. For the
revival on 10 March 1736
Rameau and Fuzelier added
an entirely new act Les
Sauvages, and in the
years that followed, the
“ballet
hroïque†was
presented either complete
(1743, 1751 and 1761) or
abridged with a prologue,
Les Incas du Prou and Les
Sauvages
(1751–73).
With regard to the
instrumental movements
(dances and descriptive
pieces), the present
publication is based on
the complete edition
Opera Omnia Rameau (OOR)
volumes IV/2 and IV/7
edited by Sylvie Bouissou
which are currently in
preparation. It includes
not only the orchestral
pieces in the version
deemed valid by Rameau in
1736 (with version 2 of
Les Fleurs and Les
Sauvages), but also those
from the first version of
Les Fleurs (1735) as well
as its 1743 and 1773
revisions. Performers are
thus given a complete
selection of all the
orchestral numbers from
one of Rameau’s
central stage works for
use also in concert
performance.

With his

To this day, the concerto

Peter Damm, former

The history
of the symphony is full
of curiosities, ranging
from works that are
extremely long or scored
for extensive
instrumental forces to
those of dubious
authorship. There are
also famous symphonies
labelled as No. 0, works
with alternate or
multiple opus numbers,
and a wealth of
'unfinished' symphonies.
Krzysztof Pendereckis 6.
Sinfonie can also be
included in this
category, since his
Seventh and Eighth were
completed decades ago.
This work is comprised of
eight songs on Chinese
texts connected by solo
intermezzos played on the
Chinese stringed
instrument,erhu. As in
his two preceding works,
the focus here is on
vowels. This work,
however, is scored for
smaller orchestral forces
and possesses a more
intimate chamber music
character, at times with
greater melancholy than
before. Penderecki has
declared this symphony to
be his farewell from the
genre, although we know
from experience that
anything is possible with
symphonies.

masterpiece of a Baroque
“Tragdie en
musique†by the
French composer. This
edition of the
“Symphoniesâ€
includes all of the
purely instrumental
numbers of the opera in
their various versions.
The contents provides an
overview of the movements
according to keys so that
an effective suite can be
easily compiled for a
concert performance. The
expressive and diverse
music encompasses some of
Rameau’s most
popular instrumental
works.

The twelve
“London
Symphoniesâ€
comprise the sublime
final statement of
Haydn's symphonic oeuvre.
They were written for the
London impresario Johann
Peter Salomon, and Haydn
himself conducted their
premieres during his
lengthy stays in the
English metropolis in
1791/92 and 1794/95.
Hailing from 1791, the
Symphony in D major no.
96 numbers among the
first symphonies written
in and for London. The
epithet given to it by
posterity, “The
Miracleâ€, was
bestowed erroneously, for
the miracle - that no one
was injured when a
chandelier fell during a
concert - took place
during a performance of a
different Haydn symphony.
And yet it is a miracle
of musical esprit
nonetheless; from the
subtle relations between
the motives consisting of
broken triads that open
all four movements, to
the virtuosic shifts in
mood owing to surprising
harmonies, Haydn here
submits a prime example
of how he develops
musical ideas. This study
edition adopts the
musical text of the Haydn
Complete Edition, thereby
guaranteeing the highest
scholarly quality. An
informative preface and a
brief Critical Report
make the handy score an
ideal companion for all
current and soon-to-be
Haydn fans.

Rameau's
“Les Fêtes de
l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†was long
considered second-rate
because its première
was associated with a
political event. Yet this
ballet abounds in novel
dramaturgical effects
that foreshadow his later
operas, such as
“Zaïsâ€,
“Zoroastreâ€
and “Les
Boradesâ€. Working
together with his
librettist Cahusac,
Rameau sought to weave
the dance numbers,
choruses and stage
machinery more tightly
into the main plot. He
also experimented with
stylistic devices unique
to this work, the most
famous being
unquestionably the scene
in which the Nile
overflows its banks (an
impressive ten-voice
double chorus with solo
voices and orchestra) and
the sextet from
“Arurisâ€, a
scoring found nowhere
else in his
uvre.
For the
first time, this
scholarly-critical
edition of “Les
Fêtes de l'Hymen et de
l'Amour†presents a
reference version of the
work that is based on all
the major sources for
both the libretto and the
music, including two
recent musical
discoveries. As most of
the performance material
for the première has
vanished, our edition is
based on the version
prepared for the Acadmie
Royale de Musique in
1748.

The two
string quartets by
Camille Saint-Saens
appear here in one volume
for the first time. The
String Quartet No. 1 in E
Minor op. 112 (1899)
numbers among the
composer's most
successful pieces and is
emblematic of the genre
in the French repertoire.
Here Saint-Saens displays
his fully developed
mastery and presents the
wealth of his inspiration
and musical prowess. Only
three years before his
death, he surprisingly
composed the String
Quartet No. 2 in G major
op. 153 (1918) which,
with its classicistic
stance, represents a
homage to the masters of
the late eighteenth
century Viennese
School.
In
addition to the first
critical edition of the
two string quartets, this
second volume of
theOeuvres instrumentales

Saint-Saens includes the

string quartet, the

previously unknown and
unpublished Adagio from
Symphony No. 2 in A Minor
op. 55 for string

and reception histories
of all these pieces; the

those of 1749. Orchestras

Giambattista

A memorable
musical competition
commissioned by the
emperor Joseph II took
place on 7 February 1786
as part of a festival in
the orangery of the
Schönbrunn palace. A
German Singspiel ensemble
performed Mozart’s
“Schauspieldirektor
†whilst Antonio
Salieri’s
“Prima la musica e
poi le parole†was
performed by the Italian
court singers and
musicians. This charming
opera satire belongs to
the genre of
“metamelodrammaâ
in which the opera
itself becomes the
subject of the action.
The people who are part
of an opera production,
for example the
librettist, composer and
prima donna, appear as
characters on the stage
and are presented in a
humorous self-reflection.
In this ‘theatre
about theatre’
Salieri parodies the
music from Giuseppe
Sarti’s
“Giulio
Sabino†in his
insert arias, thus
playing on the music
which was totally
familiar with the
audience of the time. By
reflecting on the
musical-dramatic style of
that period and
discussing whether
‘the word’
or ‘the
music’ should take
priority, this
masterpiece is considered
to be an early forerunner
to Richard
Strauss’s
“Capriccioâ€.<
