In
Sanskrit, the word
Vrishti means rain and in
the Hindu context, the
work evokes (divine)
light falling on the
world like rain, the
influx of luminous
thoughts. Vrishti is a
manifestation of superior
consciousness in our
life, a spiritual
fullness. This piece is
based on a mantra to Siva
I once heard in Jaisalmer
(Rajasthan) in July 2008.
M. Rupendra Gopa Ji
allowed me to record his
vocal performance. The
in-depth study of this
mantra revealed important
factors (temporality,
rhymicity, intonation,
articulation, agogics)
that influenced my own
compositioin, showing
through the surface as a
far-off echo in filigree
or as a faint trace like
a thermal imprint or a
fossil light. For the
performer, the most
tangible traces of this
palimpsest-like process
are found in the constant
change between binary and
ternary meters, and in
the 27-strophe structure
that follows the original
design and proportions of
the original mantra.

Programme note: In 1999
my friend, American
guitar virtuoso David
Starobin, wanted me to
write a concerto for
guitar and orchestra. It
quickly dawned on me,
that this commission
presented a golden
opportunity to contribute
to the time-honoured
tradition of composing a
series of variations on
Nicolo Paganini's famous
24th Caprice for violin
solo, a work which itself
is a set of variations.
The 16 bar (with the
first 4 bars repeated)
theme is not particularly
sophisticated or
intricate, but its
inherent simplicity and
logic just grow on you,
almost to the point
ofdistraction - and the
secret behind it being
hauled through the
wringer by composers as
disparate as Liszt,
Brahms, Rachmaninoff and
Lutoslawski is perhaps
found in its - what I'll
call, with a quick
nervous look over my
shoulder: brilliant
banality. You can do
anything with that tune,
it'll always be
recognizable and just
there, however much you
maul it. The piece
(subtitled Guitar
Concerto no 2) was
written pretty quickly,
premiered and
subsequently recorded for
Bridge Records with David
and the Odense Symphony
Orchestra conducted by
Jan Wagner, and everybody
was happy. But the story
didn't end there, and it
must be the ultimate
proof of the durability
of the theme, not to
mention the flexibility
and far-sightedness of
David Starobin , when he
14 years later suggested
why not transcribe the
solo part for piano?. The
idea appealed to me
immediately. One thing
was clear from the
beginning: the new
version could in no way
sound like a
transcription. My aim was
to end up with a
solo-part sounding like
were it the one-and-only,
the real thing, if you
like. The orchestral
score remains exactly the
same in both cases. Both
versions, the two
Paganini Variations, are
comparable to a set of
twins, not quite
identical, but almost.
And both each others's

Within musical
activities there exists a
great diversity of
different aspects that
often go far beyond any
particular
specialization. Of all
cultural activities
clearly music is one that
manifests numerous
multidisciplinary
features which not only
enriches music itself but
also all who are involved
in it. This is certainly
the case of Jordi
Vilaprinyo, an excellent
pianist, brilliant
composer and a dedicated
pedagogue with a
remarkable career as a
professor at the
Conservatorio Municipal
de Musica de Barcelona
and in other educational
institutions. All of this
is all in addition to his
role as a tireless
advocate of everything
relating to the piano,
which reveals his
exceptional personality
completely dedicated to
his greatest
passion-music.
T
he academic year 2011-12
marked the celebration of
the 125th anniversary of
the Conservatorio
Municipal de Musica de
Barcelona. In honor of
the occasion, Jordi
Vilaprinyo composed a
series of eleven short
pieces which present a
pianistic-musical
portrait of each
professor of the Piano
Department in our
Conservatory. This piece,
written in the form of a
suite, brings together
eleven imaginative
musical sketches which
reflect the personal
qualities and musical
personalities of his
colleagues as seen
through the eyes of Mr.
Vilaprinyo. These eleven
portraits reveal the
respect which Jordi feels
for his colleagues and at
the same time they are
ideal teaching
pieces.
The
various portraits are
written in a free and
diverse musical language
which is always
effective. Certain
moments are quite
evocative while others
are more descriptive and,
at times, more energetic.
The varied textures and
sonic balance are always
highly controlled and
affecting. However, I
would like to emphasize,
that although the work
could be considered as
program music due to its
personal nature, the
pieces stand apart for
their musical
quality.
Publish
ed by Editorial Boileau,
the work was premiered in
a student concert which
Professor Maria Rosa
Ribas organizes each
year. Professor Ribas is
one of the members of the
Piano Department depicted
in the musical portraits.
The premiere, performed
by students of the
Conservatory, took place
in the Auditorio Eduard
Toldra on May 30,
2011.
The Onze
retrats [Eleven
Portraits] are dedicated
respectively to the
following professors:
Carolina Saldana, Merce
Molero, Maria Drets,
Montserrat Cabero, Maria
Jesus Crespo, Carles
Marques, Maria Rosa
Ribas, Albada Olaya,
