The
cantata Argre dich, o
Seele, nicht BWV 186 is
in a sense the companion
work to the much
better-known cantata Herz
und Mund und Tat und
Leben BWV 147. Both were
composed in Advent 1716
as Bach's last two
cantatas for the Weimar
court, and both were
arranged for another
Sunday in Bach's first
Leipzig cantata cycle by
the addition of
recitatives and a
large-scale chorale
movement, heard at the
end of both parts. The
sound of the Cantata BWV
186 is characterized by
the four-part woodwind
ensemble writing. The
final chorale, heard
twice, anticipates the
opening choruses of the
chorale cantatas from
Bach's second cycle.

Chorale Fanfare
opens with a stirring
fanfare section. This is
followed by the the
composer's original
chorale melody which is
true in style to the
traditional chorales of
J.S. Bach and so many
others of the reformation
era.
The
chorale is presented in
the organ, at first just
the unadorned melody with
each phrase adding more
harmonic lines. Then it
is richly voiced in four
parts for the brass
players. The fanfare
motifs return and build
to a glorious
conclusion.
The
3-minute work is
appropriate for
moderately advanced
performers and would
sound wonderful in a
large hall or church.

During his
short lifetime Max Reger
(1873-1916) was a
prolific composer with
many of his best known
works being composed for
organ. The ten chorale
preludes in this
selection are from his
set of Thirty Short
Chorale Preludes Op.135a
composed as short
voluntaries for
liturgical use rather
than for recitals in
these arrangements Philip
Sparke has kept this in
mind and each prelude can
be performed with minimal
instrumentation for those
occasions where a small
band is needed. They also
make great pieces for
band warm-ups or studies
in intonation, sound and
balance.
Max Reger
(1873-1916) is de
componist van 30
Koraalbewerkingen, op.
135a voor orgel. Hieruit
stammen deze tien
preludes. Eigenlijk waren
ze bedoeld als vrij
muzikaal intermezzo
binnen de kerkelijke
muziek. En ook met dit
arrangementvoor
blaasorkest houdt Philip
Sparke rekening met dit
oorspronkelijke doel. Hij
maakte ze speelbaar voor
een minimale bezetting
zodat u ze ook met een
klein ensemble tijdens de
kerkdienst kunnen
uitvoeren. Verder zijn ze
ook bijzondergeschikt als
opwarmstuk en als stem-,
klank- of balansoefening.
Bovendien kunt u ze als
kleine suite gebruiken in
een concertprogramma.
Veelzijdig!
Max
Reger komponierte eine

Genres. Unter anderem
schrieb er 30 kleine
Vorspiele zu den
gebräuchlichsten

die mehr als für den

als Vortragsstücke

This
stately work is very
loosely based on the
opening chords from 'The
Lamb', although there are
no direct quotations from
that work. The opening
chorale is played as
gradually more themes are
added above in a
dignified and legato
subject where instruments
sustain notes to give a
lingering echo effect.
Players need to be aware
of their role in this to
maximise the effect. The
second subject increases
the intensity until the
time signature change
introduces a second
chorale. Then, a short
imitative passage leads
to a rising appogiatura
theme and the climax of
the work, which
re-introduces the
original chorale in a
major tonality. With
versions for brass
ensemble, brass band,
wind orchestra and
woodwind orchestra, this
work has been placed in
concerts when a
meaningful, reflective
moment is required.

Bach's
chorale cantata Lobe den
Herren, den machtigen
Konig der Ehren BWV 137,
has long been, thanks to
its popular chorale text,
one of the most
frequently-performed
works by the Kantor of
St. Thomas's. Unlike the
cantatas in the cycle of
chorale cantatas, the
text of the hymn is not
only used in the opening
and final chorales, but
Bach uses it in all the
movements. The new
edition reflects the
current state of research
and presents this work in
Carus's clear-to-read
music setting. Score and
