heroic main theme
representing the Spirit
of America. A rousing
version of Anchors Aweigh
takes us to the naval
base at Pearl Harbor and
the activities of the
day. By the end of
Anchors Aweigh, the mood
seems to change,
foreshadowing the fate of
the U.S. fleet. Next, the
haunting theme of the
Japanese National Anthem
is heard and the distant
sound of propellers as
they approach. When the
planes arrive, the battle
rages until there is
total destruction.

Squish! is a love story,
King Kong’s love
story. But not the
conventional one
immortalised in the 1933
Hollywood film - the
terrifying giant ape
astride the Empire State
Building who clasps the
fainting heroine, while
swiping hopelessly at the
planes which eventually
send him crashing dead to
the ground. This is the
American Sign Language
(ASL) version which has
something of a twist at
the end. Squish! was
written as
Composer-in-Residence
with Cuatro Puntos and
was commissioned with
funds from the
Connecticut Officeof the
Arts. The premiere took
place at the American
School for the Deaf (the
oldest permanent school
for the deaf in the
United States founded in
1817) in West Hartford,
Connecticut, on 7th
December 2016.

until the mood calms
suddenly to introduce a
chorale which leads to a
duet-cadenza for cornet
and euphonium. The
rhythmic mood of the
opening soon returns and
leads to the main theme
of the work, a modal
caccia which
features various section
of the band. A short
bridge passage leads to a
change of key and a new
cantabile theme
which isintroduced by
euphoniums and baritone.
This is taken up by the
full band after another
change of key and leads
back to the caccia
theme. A transformed
version of the opening
fanfare returns to close
the work.

Squish! is a love
story, King Kong’s
lovestory. But not the
conventional one
immortalised in the 1933
Hollywood film - the
terrifying giant ape
astride the Empire State
Building who clasps the
fainting heroine, while
swiping hopelessly at the
planes which eventually
sendhim crashing dead to
the ground. This is the
American Sign Language
(ASL) version which has
something of a twist at
the end.
Squish!
was written as
Composer-in-Residence
with Cuatro Puntos and
was commissioned
withfundsfrom the
Connecticut Office of the
Arts. The premiere took
place at the American
School for the Deaf (the
oldest permanent school
for the deaf in the
United States founded in
1817) in West Hartford,
Connecticut, on
7thDecember 2016.
