The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustratedhimself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, areligious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can beplayed easily at the right moment. The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one,and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in “The Net of Religion,” which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin inJerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths “come together.” In the first movement of this composition, The Vision, Urizen prepares his vision of the world, and he presents this to the “Eternals.” His vision is rejected,and Urizen locks himself up in his own abstract world. When he does emerge again, he is confronted with rage by the gathered Eternals. Urizen flees the wrath of the Eternals, “the flames of eternal fury,” and enwombs himself in his own world. Whenthe Eternals see Urizen in his “stony sleep,” they wonder if this is death. The blacksmith Los is torn by grief because of the isolation of Urizen. It brings him to rouse his fires, prepare his forge, and to give Urizen’s world concrete form. In thesecond movement, The Creation, Urizen’s world, but also man, woman, and child are created. Los is horrified with the appearance of Urizen’s body. He mourns and pities Urizen, and from his blood a female form comes into being, with thename Enitharmon. The Eternals, fearful of the female form, decide to erect a tent to obstruct their view to eternity. Enitharmon and Los beget a son, called Orc. Los baptizes him as a child of the “fallen world.” Orc is fed at Enitharmon’s breast,which makes a girdle of jealousy restrict Los’ chest. He takes the child to the top of the mountain and chains him down. The cries of Orc awaken Urizen, who explores his world creating instruments of scientific measurement to do so. Los encircles theface of Enitharmon from the sight of Urizen and Orc. This is a wonderful collection of klezmer music, inspired by the Jewish dances and songs of the klezmorim from Eastern Europe - from the lyrical HORA to the fast, compelling FREILACH. Some of the pieces have a second part ad libitum - for playingtogether or for variation in a repeat. For the accompaniment, chord symbols have been added and on the included CD there are complete versions as well as play-along versions of all pieces, played live by genuine klezmer musicians.

On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

Deze compositie is echter tevens geschreven voor alle mensen die Wons hebben gemaakt tot wat het nu is: een prachtig dorpje vlak bij het IJsselmeer waar het prettig toeven is. Dan klinkt een aansprekend ritmisch thema in een snel tempo dat de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid van voor de oorlog uitstraalt. Ce monument a inspiré le titre de cette composition. Mais celle-ci a aussi été écrite pour toutes les personnes qui ont donné Wons son caractère d’aujourd’h ui : un joli village proche du lac d’IJssel où il fait bon vivre. La pièce débute par une introduction festive qui présente le village l’auditeur. S’ensuit un thème allègre et délicieusement rythmique qui reflète l’ambiance joyeuse, na ve et optimiste de l’avant-guerre. Puis nous entendons un motif sombre et fragmenté, représentant les fusillades ciblant les soldats. Cettepartie se termine par un faisceau de sons dissonants traduisant le caractère tragique de la guerre. Le calme revient avec un passage tranquille en mineur qui évoque la fois la frustration et l’apaisement. Le tempo du début est repris, cette fois sous la forme d’une marche victorieuse. Puis résonnent les accents premiers de gaieté, d’innocence et d’insouciance, invoquant la célébration de la liberté. Un thème martial et festif en hommage au village nous mène un pétillant finale.

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!

De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd. Dit concertwerk in de reeks door Jacob de Haan verklankte staten is een suite in drie delen, gebaseerd op een bekende volksmelodie uit Arkansas.Tijdens de eerste maten komt in de euphoniums en bassen direct de volksmelodie naar voren, die uitmondt in een aantal lyrische maten. Deze vormen de inleiding tot een sneller tempo (Allegro risoluto) waarin de melodie in fragmenten wordt geëxposeerddoor euphoniums, baritons en bugel, canonisch beantwoord door de trombones. In het daaropvolgende Allegro molto klinkt een concertino-achtig spel in diverse instrumentgroepen, afgewisseld met een nieuwe, zangerige melodie. Het deel sluit af met devolksmelodie in de trombones, maar nu gedempt.Het tweede deel is een ballade waarin de volksmelodie in majeur klinkt. Na een inleiding van gedempte cornetten en trombones gevolgd door zacht koper is de melodie te horen in de euphoniums en baritons in een lyrische zetting. Even wordt detoonsoort weer mineur, wanneer instrumentgroepen elkaar imiteren. Met een bugelsolo komen we terug in majeur. Na een tussenspel klinkt een ornamentele variatie, vertolkt door een cornetsolo en euphoniumsolo,waarna een naspel met gedempte cornetten en trombones volgt. Het laatste deel komt tot klinken in een flitsend Allegro vivace, aanvankelijk vergezeld door chromatische lijnen in de begeleiding en een markant, door kwartentriolen afgewisseld ritme in het slagwerk. Dan klinkt de blues door in de cornetten enhoorns, begeleid door een jazzy ritme waarin de sfeer van de Bolero van Ravel even doorklinkt. Dit leidt via een parallelle triolenpassage terug naar het beginthema van dit deel, dat nu in diverse instrumenten te horen is. Dan verschijnt devolksmelodie weer in haar pure vorm in de euphoniums, waarop de bugel en later de solocornet reageert. Via enkele syncopische maten horen we het begin van de melodie nu in majeur gespeeld door respectievelijk cornetten en hoorns. Het slotgedeelteomvat een melodieuze lijn in lange noten die leidt naar een spetterend einde in kwartentriolen.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ werd geschreven in opdracht van de AD Concert Band uit het Britse Solihull, ter gelegenheid van het veertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest in 2016. De titel, Ad Excel, heeft een dubbele betekenis, die is gebaseerd op de Engelse van het Latijn afgeleide term ‘to excel’ (excelleren, uitblinken) én op het veertigjarig jubileum van de band, aangezien XL in Romeinse cijfers het getal 40 aanduidt. Het werk opent met een opgewekte fanfare waarin frequent van maatsoort wordt gewisseld. Dan volgt een speels hoofdthema, eerst in het hout en dan het volledige orkest. Een bridgegedeelte leidt naar een legato tweede thema, dat twee keer klinkt.Daarop keert de bridge terug om beide hoofdmelodieën in nieuwe toonsoorten en instrumentaties te introduceren, waarna een coda, ontleend aan de openingsfanfare, het werk besluit.
