years ago in Rome, I
encountered a murmuration
of starlings and I was
amazed with its
overwhelming beauty,
changing shape as it
moved. Moving of a fish
school that you can watch
in an aquarium, has the
same beauty and the
energy. According to the
scientists, their fine
movement in a flock is
based on the following
three simple rules: -
steer to avoid crowding
local flockmates - steer
towards the average
heading of local
flockmates - steer to
move towards the average
position (center of mass)
of local flockmates The
word Boids refers to
bird-like objects
(bird-oids), representing
the beauty of their
movements in a flock
which is a result of
balancing out with each
other, following the
principle of least
effort. I wonder if these
rules can be applied to
the way a string quartet
is shaped. Boids again
has been written as a
sequel to the piece Boids
(2017), a 4 minute study
for string quartet in the
frame of the Kronos
Quartet's educational
project 50 for the

'Per Piero'
and 'Per Maurizio' are
among the most recent
pieces written for solo
guitar by Gilberto
Cappelli. The first
piece, written in 2006,
represents a surprise
present for my fiftieth
birthday: it was written
after a request of a
pupil of mine, Alessandra
Lucchi, who performed it
as a premiere during my
birthday party. The
second piece (2009)
expresses the
composer’s
participation for the
pain caused by the sudden
death of Maurizio
Biasini, scientist and
guitarist who completed
his musical studies at
Cesena Conservatory where
Gilberto Cappelli was in
the Board of Examiners.
The piece was premiered
at a concert in memory of
Maurizio held in the
Bonci Theatre in
Cesena. The use of a
particular tremolo effect
is a typical
characteristic of all the
guitar works of this
composer; a tremolo which
is very different from
the traditional one. The
performer is asked to
produce – as much
as possible – a
long and continuous
sound, as if it were a
voice or the long sound
of string or wind
instruments. The tremolo
will have to be very
dense and homogeneous. In
the case of a tremolo on
two or three strings it
is necessary to start
playing two or three
sounds simultaneously
only once and then
continuing alternating
them – but always
tending to achieve a
homogeneity of sound.

The Sudoku
fever has finally reached
the world of music.
'Musik-Sudoku' is the
first musical variant of
the popular
number-placement puzzle.
Instead of numbers, the
seven solfege syllables
Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si
have to be entered in a
certain order. The really
special thing about it is
that the notes in the
marked boxes match the
beginning of a famous
melody - from 'Let it be'
by the Beatles to
Mozart's 'Kleine
Nachtmusik' -, thus
providing a musical clue
to the solution.The
puzzles of varying
difficulty, from
'elementary' to
'virtuoso', can also be
resolved by players
without a special
knowledge of music. What
is most required is
brains, power of
deduction and a bit of
patience. And for the
experts among the puzzle
freaks, there are also
dodecaphonic sudokus and
sudokus based on musical
symbols.Coming from a
family of musicians, the
brothers David and Bernat
Puertas jointly invented
the musical sudokus. The
appropriate software was
developed by Bernat, the
computer scientist, who
currently works in a
games company. The idea
for the musical solutions
was conceived by his
brother David, who is
both a musician and an
author of books on music
by composers such as
Mozart and
Stravinsky.

Schumann fanden bisher
relativ selten Beachtung
- (Regers
Schumann-Variationen fur
zwei Klaviere sind eine
Ausnahme) - vielleicht,
weil sie zu sehr in sich
vollendet und
abgeschlossen sind und
deshalb kaum
Moglichkeiten zur
Veranderung enthalten.
Dennoch beschaftigte mich
schon langer die Idee,
eine ,,Musik mit
Schumann, Nachklange oder
Erinnerungen an Schumann
zu gestalten, mit der
Absicht, ein heiteres,
liebenswurdiges (und
nachdenkliches) Werk zu
schreiben, einmal ohne
Experimente-, als
,,Divertimento fur den
Normalhorer, gelegentlich
behutsam verbunden mit
modernen Techniken -
nicht ohne
hintergrundigen Humor.
Der 1. Satz wurde
inspiriert von den
,,Papillons (opus 2 fur
Klavier); er gliedert
sich in vier
variationsahnliche
Abschnitte. Die
,,Ouverture exponiert
drei kurze Themen, die
sich trotz ihres
gegensatzlichen
Charakters wie
selbstverstandlich
erganzen
(Einleitungsgirlande und
Schlussfanfare der
Papillons und das
bekannte Anfangsmotiv aus
,,Vogel als Prophet). Die
Abschnitte ,,Thema,
,,Variationen und ,,Coda
entwickeln und verandern
das Hauptthema der
,,Papillons; dieses
dominiert uber weite
Strecken des Satzes und
wird mit den Motiven der
Ouverture kombiniert.
Vielfaltig gegliedert ist
das ,,Lyrische
Intermezzo. Zu Beginn
gewinnt ein Motiv aus den
,,Nachtstucken (fur
Klavier) Bedeutung,
taucht mehrere Male auf,
von mehrtonigen b-a-c-h
Clustern ,,gestort. Im
Mittelpunkt stehen das
Thema des 2. Satzes der
g-moll Klavier-Sonate op.
22 (ein Mondnachtlied
ohne Worte; Holzblaser)
und ein Adagio-Gedanke
aus dem Klavier-Zyklus
,,Kreisleriana (tiefe
Streicher); beide Themen
werden kontrapunktiert
von zwolftonigen
Strukturen und
Klangbandern
(Holzblaser). Die
,,Fruhlings-Symphonie-Fan
fare eroffnet das Finale.
Danach bilden sich uber
rotierenden Klangflachen
(Streicher) einzelne Tone
und Intervalle,
aleatorisch frei,
verdichten sich, wie aus
der Erinnerung
auftauchend, zu Motiven
aus Schumanns
bekanntester Symphonie.
Nach diesem zogernden
Beginn entwickelt sich
ein fast klassisch
anmutender
Sonaten-Durchfuhrungsteil
mit mehreren melodischen
Gedanken (Kopfmotiv der
g-moll Klaviersonate,
tanzerische und ostinate
Themen aus der
Fruhlings-Symphonie), die
zum Teil in- und
ubereinander geschichtet
werden, bis auf dem
Hohepunkt des Satzes das
Schlussthema der
Klavierfantasie op. 17,
pathetisch-ironisch in
den Blechblasern
erklingt. Eine kurze
Reprise mit dem
Hauptgedanken fuhrt zur
Anfangsfanfare zuruck;
der Satz verklingt im
pianissimo. Wollte man
dem ganzen opus ein Motto
voranstellen, dann die
Schumann-Uberschrift (aus
den Kinderszenen) :
,,Fast zu ernst - aber
