the individual readings
(alternative readings,

call for great music The
Dettingen Te Deum is a
brilliant example of how
Handel could capture the
tone for festive
occasions as had never
been done before. The
expression of the exalted
character of this
official work is imparted
through Handel's express
use of timpani and
trumpets. Gentler and
more serious movements
effectively complement
the work. The basis for
the present critical
edition of this work is
the London autograph,
which has survived and
from which Handel
probably conducted the
first performance. In
addition, the initial
concluding version of the
chorus Make them to be
number'd has been
published in this
edition. In this version
Handel strived for a more
compact and stricter
voice leading. Score and

Johann
Sebastian Bach's
Magnificat BWV 243 was
composed in its first
form in E flat, right at
the beginning of Bach's
period in Leipzig, for
the Visitation of Mary on
2.7.1723; for a further
performance on the 1st
day of Christmas, Bach
added four extra
Christmas movements
following a Leipzig
tradition. Only in the
1730s did Bach arrange
the Magnificat in the
well-known version in D;
the orchestration was
slightly altered,
particularly improving
the considerable
practical performance
problems encountered in
the E flat major version.
Our critical new edition
contains the version of
the Magnificat in D,
based on Bach's autograph
score. For Christmas
performances the extra
movements are available
separately, transposed
for performance with the
D major version of the
Magnificat (Carus
31.243/50). Score and
part available separately

In 1827,
shortly after a stay with

an echo of his contact

Palestrina. Mendelssohn
himself considered the
