In 1989, the
demonstration named the
Baltic Way also
known as the Baltic
Chain— was held in
the Baltic states of
Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania by its citizens
in a call for
independence from the
Soviet Union. On 23rd
August 1989, some two
million participants
formed a human chain,
hand-in-hand all the way
from the Estonian capital
of Tallinn its Latvian
counterpart, Riga,
through to the Lithuanian
capital of Vilnius - six
hundred kilometres long.
It became the longest
human chain ever created
and turned out to be the
final push needed for
much sought-after
independence. This
historic event became the
source of inspiration for
this composition. The
introduction of thefirst
movement, ‘Struggle
for Independence’,
is based on a nocturne
for piano by the renowned
Lithuanian composer and
painter Mikalojus
Konstantinas iurlionis
(1875-1911), thematic
material from which has
been incorporated
throughout the whole
composition. The
melancholic beginning is
followed by a powerful
theme which reflects the
resolve of the Baltic
people. The sudden
aggressive, dissonant
chords and a dominant
and—in rhythmic
terms—contrary
bass drum announce that
the resistance is not
going smoothly. Just for
a moment, we hear the
anthem of the Soviet
Union in the lower brass,
but this is relentlessly
pushed to the background
by the rest of the band
playing the Lithuanian
national anthem,
‘Tautiška giesm
’ (Lithuania, our
homeland). The second
movement, ‘Decades
of Suffering’,
echoes life under the
Soviet Union's thumb. In
the pursuit of
independence, a peaceful
protest is planned in
which a human chain is
formed across the Baltic
states of Estonia, Latvia
and Lithuania. This
‘Chain of
Freedom’ is
depicted in the final
movement of the work.

The piece
reflects the composer's
fascination with the
origins of the universe
and deep space in
general. The title comes
from a theory, formulated
by Pythagoras, that the
cosmos was ruled by the
same laws he had
discovered that govern
the ratios of note
frequencies of the
musical scale.
(‘Harmonia’
in Ancient Greek, which
means scale or tuning
rather than harmony -
Greek music was
monophonic). He also
believed that these
ratios corresponded to
the distances of the six
known planets from the
sun and that the planets
each produced a musical
note which combined to
weave a continuous
heavenly melody (which,
unfortunately, we humans
cannot hear). In this
work, these six notesform
the basis of the sections
MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and
HARMONIA. The pieces
opens with a horn solo
called t = 0, a name
given by some scientists
to the moment of the Big
Bang when time and space
were created, and this is
followed by a depiction
of the BIG BANG itself,
as the entire universe
bursts out from a single
point. A slower section
follows called THE LONELY
PLANET which is a
meditation on the
incredible and unlikely
set of circumstances
which led to the creation
of the Earth as a planet
that can support life,
and the constant search
for other civilisations
elsewhere in the
universe. ASTEROIDS AND
SHOOTING STARS depicts
both the benign and
dangerous objects that
are flying through space
and which constantly
threaten our planet, and
the piece ends with THE
UNKNOWN, leaving in
question whether our
continually expanding
exploration of the
universe will eventually
lead to enlightenment or
destruction.
Dit
werk weerspiegelt de
fascinatie van de
componist voor het
heelal. Het begint met
een hoornsolo met de naam
t = 0, waarmee
sommige wetenschappers de
oerknal aanduiden. Dan
volgt een weergave van de
oerknal zelf. Het
volgendegedeelte, The
Lonely Planet, is een
meditatie over het
ongelooflijke samenspel
van omstandigheden dat
leidde tot het ontstaan
van de Aarde.
Asteroids and Shooting
Stars beschrijft
objecten in de ruimte.
Het werkeindigt met
The Unknown,
waarmee we in het
ongewisse blijven over de
gevolgen van onze verdere
verkenning van het
universum. In 2005 won
Philip Sparke met
Music of the

Sparke. Il titolo

quale il cosmo è retto

inizia con un assolo di

Hava
Nagila (the title
means ‘let us
rejoice’) is
perhaps the best known
example of a style of
Jewish music called
‘klezmer’.
Klezmer music originated
in the
‘shtetl’
(villages) and the
ghettos of Eastern
Europe, where itinerant
Jewish troubadours, known
as
‘klezmorim’,
had performed at
celebrations,
particularly weddings,
since the early Middle
Ages.‘Klezmerâ€
is a Yiddish term
combining the Hebrew
words ‘kley’
(instrument) and
‘zemer’
(song) and the roots of
the style are found in
secular melodies, popular
dances, Jewish
‘hazanut’
(cantorial music) and
also the
‘nigunim’,
the wordless melodies
intoned by the
‘Hasidim’
(orthodox Jews).Since the
16th century, lyrics
hadbeen added to klezmer
music, due to the
‘badkhn’
(the master of ceremony
at weddings), to the
‘Purimshpil’
(the play of Esther at
Purim) and to traditions
of the Yiddish theatre,
but the term gradually
became synonymous with
instrumental music,
particularly featuring
the violin and clarinet.
The melody of Hava
Nagila was adapted
from a folk dance from
the Romanian district of
Bucovina. The commonly
used text is taken from
Psalm 118 of the Hebrew
bible.
Hava
Nagila (de titel
betekent ‘laat ons
gelukkig zijn’) is
misschien wel het
bekendste voorbeeld van
klezmer, een Joodse
muziekstijl.De
klezmermuziek komt van
oorsprong uit de sjtetls
(dorpen) en de
getto’s van
Oost-Europa, waar
rondtrekkende Joodse
troubadours, bekend als
klezmorim, al sinds de
middeleeuwen hadden
opgetreden bij
feestelijkheden, en dan
met name
bruiloften.Klezmer is een
Jiddische term waarin de
Hebreeuwse woorden kley
(instrument) en zemer
(lied) zijn samengevoegd.
De wortels van de stijl
liggen in wereldlijke
melodieën,
volksdansen, de
joods-liturgische hazanut
en ook de nigunim, de
woordeloze melodieën
zoals die worden
voorgedragen
doorchassidische
(orthodoxe) joden.Sinds
de 16e eeuw zijn er aan
de klezmermuziek ook
teksten toegevoegd,
dankzij de badchen (de
ceremoniemeester bij
huwelijken), het
poerimspel (het verhaal
van Esther tijdens
Poerim/het Lotenfeest) en
tradities binnen het
Jiddische theater, maar
de term werd geleidelijk
synoniem aan
instrumentale muziek met
een hoofdrol voor de
viool en klarinet.De
melodie van Hava
Nagila is afkomstig
van een volksdans uit de
Roemeense regio
Boekovina. De meest
gebruikte tekst voor het
lied kom uit psalm 118
van de Hebreeuwse Bijbel.
Hava
Nagila (auf Deutsch
‚Lasst uns
glücklich
sein’) ist
vielleicht das
bekannteste Beispiel
für den jüdischen
Musikstil namens
‚Klezmer’.
Klezmermusik hat ihren
Ursprung in den
Shtetls“
(Städtchen) und den
Ghettos Osteuropas,
woumherziehende
jüdische Troubadours,
die man
‚Klezmorim’
nannte, schon seit dem
frühen Mittelalter auf
Feiern, vor allem
Hochzeiten, zu spielen
pflegten. Klezmer ist ein
jiddischer Begriff, der
sich aus den
hebräischen Wörtern
‚kley’(Instr
ument) und
‚zemer’
(Lied) zusammensetzt. Die
Wurzeln des Musikstils
liegen in weltlichen
Melodien, populären
Tänzen, jüdischem
‚Chasanut’
(Kantorengesang) und auch
‚Niggunim’,
Melodien ohne Text,
vorgetragen von
den‚Chassidimâ€
(orthodoxen Juden).
Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert
wurden die
Klezmermelodien mit
Texten versehen, was auf
die
‚Badchan’
(Zeremonienmeister bei
Hochzeiten), auf das
‚Purimshpil’
(Das Esther-Spiel zum
Purimfest) und
aufTraditionen des
jiddischen Theaters
zurückgeht. Der
Begriff Klezmer wurde
jedoch mit der Zeit
gleichbedeutend mit
Instrumentalmusik, im
Besonderen mit den
Instrumenten Violine und
Klarinette. Die Melodie
von Hava Nagila
ist eine Adaption
einesVolkstanzes aus der
rumänischen Bukowina.
Der üblicherweise
verwendete Text stammt
aus Psalm 118 der
hebräischen Bibel.

met name
bruiloften.Klezmer is een
Jiddische term waarin de
Hebreeuwse woorden kley
(instrument) en zemer
(lied) zijn samengevoegd.
De wortels van de stijl
liggen in wereldlijke
melodieën,
volksdansen, de
joods-liturgische hazanut
en ook de nigunim, de
woordeloze melodieën
zoals die worden
voorgedragen
doorchassidische
(orthodoxe) joden.Sinds
de 16e eeuw zijn er aan
de klezmermuziek ook
teksten toegevoegd,
dankzij de badchen (de
ceremoniemeester bij
huwelijken), het
poerimspel (het verhaal
van Esther tijdens
Poerim/het Lotenfeest) en
tradities binnen het
Jiddische theater, maar
de term werd geleidelijk
synoniem aan
instrumentale muziek met
een hoofdrol voor de
viool en klarinet.De
melodie van Hava
Nagila is afkomstig
van een volksdans uit de
Roemeense regio
Boekovina. De meest
gebruikte tekst voor het
lied kom uit psalm 118
van de Hebreeuwse Bijbel.
Hava
Nagila (auf Deutsch
‚Lasst uns
glücklich
sein’) ist
vielleicht das
bekannteste Beispiel
für den jüdischen
Musikstil namens
‚Klezmer’.
Klezmermusik hat ihren
Ursprung in den
Shtetls“
(Städtchen) und den
Ghettos Osteuropas,
woumherziehende
jüdische Troubadours,
die man
‚Klezmorim’
nannte, schon seit dem
frühen Mittelalter auf
Feiern, vor allem
Hochzeiten, zu spielen
pflegten. Klezmer ist ein
jiddischer Begriff, der
sich aus den
hebräischen Wörtern
‚kley’(Instr
ument) und
‚zemer’
(Lied) zusammensetzt. Die
Wurzeln des Musikstils
liegen in weltlichen
Melodien, populären
Tänzen, jüdischem
‚Chasanut’
(Kantorengesang) und auch
‚Niggunim’,
Melodien ohne Text,
vorgetragen von
den‚Chassidimâ€
(orthodoxen Juden).
Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert
wurden die
Klezmermelodien mit
Texten versehen, was auf
die
‚Badchan’
(Zeremonienmeister bei
Hochzeiten), auf das
‚Purimshpil’
(Das Esther-Spiel zum
Purimfest) und
aufTraditionen des
jiddischen Theaters
zurückgeht. Der
Begriff Klezmer wurde
jedoch mit der Zeit
gleichbedeutend mit
Instrumentalmusik, im
Besonderen mit den
Instrumenten Violine und
Klarinette. Die Melodie
von Hava Nagila
ist eine Adaption
einesVolkstanzes aus der
rumänischen Bukowina.
Der üblicherweise
verwendete Text stammt
aus Psalm 118 der
hebräischen Bibel.

Variations on a
Chord was composed on the
occasion of the second
lustrum of the Dutch
Brass Band Championships
celebrated in 1990. The
piece is the immediate
sequel to Contrasten a
piece which was composed
in 1986, and which is
performed all over the
world. Not only was the
final chord of this
previous work used as a
starting point for the
new composition, but
Variations on a Chord is
also the first concert
piece for brass band
composed by Jan de Haan
since then. The several
variations are based on a
solemn theme. The
so-called minor-major
seventh chord is easily
detectable. The structure
of the piece is such that
the lyrical theme is
preceded by a majestic
introduction, and
isfollowed by eight
variations each strongly
contrasting in character.
The piece finishes in a
short but extremely
spectacular coda.
Dit werk is een
directe opvolger van het
in 1986 geschreven
Contrasten. Niet
alleen vormde het
slotakkoord van dit
laatstgenoemde werk het
uitgangspunt voor deze
compositie. Variations
on a Chord is tevens
het tweedenadien
geschreven concertwerk
voor brassband van Jan de
Haan. De verschillende
variaties zijn gebaseerd
op een gedragen thema. In
dit thema, voorafgegaan
door een majestueuze
introductie is duidelijk
de karakteristiek van het
zogenaamdeklein-groot (of
naamloze) septiemakkoord
te herkennen. Daarna
volgen acht qua karakter
zeer verschillende
variaties op dit
thema.

The opening
of this three-movement
work features an initial
appearance of the
thematic material that
returns in various guises
later on in the work. The
leitmotiv centres on a
minor second. A range
of thematic variations is
heard in the lively and
energetic
Metamorphosis One.
This movement is
interrupted by an
atmospheric meno mosso,
containing melodic
passages that return to
the opening
theme. Metamorhosis
Two is characterised
by various changes in
tempo and musical
character. Seven
different soloists
transform the thematic
material each in their
own way. This eventually
culminates in a
passionate tutti
passage. The source of
inspiration for
Metamorphosis
Three is the
so-called BACH-motif, a
musical autograph
consisting of the notes B
flat, A, C and B. This
distinctive motif arises
from the leitmotiv (here
a descending minor
second), which
continuesto evolve
through various
transpositions and
transformations. For the
composer, this
spectacular last movement
is an homage to one of
the greatest and most
influential composers in
the history of music:
Johann Sebastian
Bach.
An
impressive contest piece
commissioned by Brass
Band Schoonhoven,
performed at the 2014
European Brass Band
Championships.
In de
opening van deze
driedelige compositie
wordt het thematische
materiaal gepresenteerd
dat verderop in het werk
in allerlei
transformaties voorkomt.
De ‘kleine
secunde’ dient
daarbij als leidmotief.
In het levendige en
flitsende
Metamorphosis One
wordt volop gevarieerd
met de thematiek. Het
deel wordt onderbroken
door een sfeervol meno
mosso met daarin
melodische passages die
teruggrijpen op het
beginthema. In
Metamorhosis Two
treden veel veranderingen
op in het tempo en het
muzikale karakter. Zeven
verschillende solisten
transformeren ieder op
hun eigen wijze het
thematische materiaal.
Uiteindelijk resulteert
dat in een gepassioneerd,
tuttigespeeld
gedeelte. De
inspiratiebron voor
Metamorphosis
Three is het
zogenaamde BACH-motief,
een muzikale handtekening
met de noten Bes, A, C en
B. Dit karakteristieke
motief ontstaat vanuit
het leidmotief (in dit
geval een dalende kleine
secunde) en verandert
voortdurend van gedaante
door allerlei
transposities en
omvormingen. De componist
beschouwt dit
spectaculaire laatste
deel als een eerbetoon
aan een van de grootste
en invloedrijkste
componisten uit de
geschiedenis van de
muziek: Johann
SebastianBach.
In
der Eröffnung dieses
dreisätzigen Werkes
wird zum ersten Mal das
thematische Material
präsentiert, das im
weiteren Verlauf in
diversen Gewändern
wiederkehrt. Kern des
Leitmotivs ist eine
kleine Sekunde. Eine
Reihe von thematischen
Variationen ist in der
lebhaften und
energiereichen
Metamorphosis One
zu hören. Der Satz
wird von einem
stimmungsvollen Meno
mosso aus melodischen
Passagen, die zum
Eröffnungsthema
zurückführen,
unterbrochen. Metam
orphosis Two ist von
mehreren Wechseln im
Tempo und im
musikalischen Charakter
geprägt. Sieben
verschiedene Solisten
verwandeln das
thematische Material
jedes auf seine eigene
Weise. Das Ganze steigert
sich schließlich zu
einemfulminanten
Tutti. Quelle der
Inspiration für
Metamorphosis
Three ist das so
genannte BACH-Motiv, eine
musikalische Signatur aus
den Tönen B, A, C und
H. Dieses ausgeprägte
Motiv geht aus dem
Leitmotiv hervor (hier
ist es eine absteigende
kleine Sekunde),welches
fortwährend durch
verschiedene
Transpositionen und
Transformationen
weiterentwickelt wird.
Für den Komponisten
ist dieser
spektakuläre letzte
Satz eine Hommage an
einen der größten
und einflussreichsten
Komponisten der
Musikgeschichte:
JohannSebastian
Bach.

Evolution was commissioned by
Kunstfactor for the 4th
section of the Dutch
National Brass Band
Championships (NBK) 2011.
It is dedicated to Jappie
Dijkstra and the Music
Information Centre (MUI),
Arnhem, Holland, in
acknowledgement of their
outstanding work in
developing brass band
repertoire. The composer
writes:-The idea for the
piece came when I was
reading an article about
a branch of Chinese
philosophy which is
abbreviated as Wu Xing,
which has no exact
translation but can mean,
for example, five
elements, five phases or
five states of change. It
is central to all
elements of Chinese
thought, including
science, philosophy,
medicine and astrology,
and in simpleterms tries
to create various cyclic
relationships between
five elements in all
walks of life. An example
is: Earth - Metal - Water
- Wood - Fire - (Earth)
etc. where (in one cycle)
earth bears metal, metal
changes to liquid (water)
when heated, water helps
trees grow, wood burns to
create fire, fire
produces ash (earth) and
the cycle continues.I was
particularly interested
in the cycle of emotions:
Meditation - Sorrow -
Fear - Anger - Joy -
(Meditation) etc. and
thought this cyclic
principle would provide
an effective emotional
journey for a piece of
music. So
Evolution has five
equal sections which
loosely characterise this
emotional cycle. I have
tried to make the music
grow organically, with
minimal repetition, and
each movement evolves
from the musical elements
at the end of the
previous one, with the
opening material
appearing, transformed,
at the end of the piece
to complete the cycle.
Evolution
is geschreven in opdracht
van Kunstfactor voor de
4e divisie van de NBK
(Nederlandse Brassband
Kampioenschappen) 2011.
Het werk is opgedragen
aan Jappie Dijkstra en
het MUI (Muziekuitleen-
en Informatiecentrum) te
Arnhem, als waardering
voor hun inspanningen met
betrekking tot de
ontwikkeling van het
brassbandrepertoire.De
componist schrijft:Het
idee voor
Evolution kwam in mij
op toen ik een artikel
las over een tak binnen
de Chinese filosofie
waarvan de naam wordt
afgekort tot Wu Xing -
waar geen exacte
vertaling voor is, maar
wat zoveel betekent als
vijf elementen, vijf
fasen of vijf stadia van
verandering. Het gaat om
een wezenlijk onderdeel
van allecomponenten
binnen het Chinese
gedachtegoed, inclusief
de wetenschap, filosofie,
geneeskunst en
astrologie. Simpel gezegd
draait het om het
creëren van diverse
cyclische verbanden
tussen vijf elementen die
in ieders leven een rol
spelen. Een voorbeeld:
Aarde - Metaal - Water -
Hout - Vuur - (Aarde)
enz. In deze cyclus bevat
aarde metaal; metaal
verandert in vloeistof
(water) door verhitting;
water helpt bomen te
groeien; hout dat brandt
creëert vuur; en vuur
produceert as (aarde). Zo
blijft de cyclus
voortgaan. Zelf was ik
vooral ge nteresseerd in
de cyclus van emoties:
Meditatie - Verdriet -
Angst - Boosheid -
Vreugde - (Meditatie)
enz. De gedachte aan dit
cyclische principe
leverde een reis door een
muzikale wereld van
emoties op.
Evolution bestaat
uit vijf delen die
betrekking hebben op de
emotionele cyclus. Ik heb
geprobeerd de muziek op
natuurlijke wijze te
laten ontstaan, met zo
weinig mogelijk
herhalingen. Elk deel
vloeit voort uit de
muzikale elementen uit
het slot van het
voorgaande deel. Het
openingsmateriaal komt,
in getransformeerde
gedaante, terug aan het
einde van het werk,
waarmee de cyclus wordt
afgerond.
Evolution

Werk:Die Idee zu diesem
Stück kam mir beim
Lesen eines Artikels
über eine Richtung der
chinesischen Philosophie,
die abgekürzt Wu Xing
heißt, was nicht
wörtlich übersetzt
werden kann, aber so viel
wie fünf Elemente,
fünf Phasen oder
fünf Stadien der
Verwandlung bedeutet.
Dieses Prinzip nimmt eine
zentrale Positionim
gesamten chinesischen
Gedankengut ein, sei es
in der Wissenschaft,
Medizin oder Astrologie.
Einfach ausgedrückt,
werden damit in allen
Lebensbereichen
verschiedene zyklische
Beziehungen zwischen
fünf Elementen
hergestellt.Zum Beispiel:
Erde - Metall - Wasser -
Holz - Feuer - (Erde) -
usw. In diesem Zyklus
enthält die Erde
Metall, das sich bei
Erhitzung verflüssigt
(Wasser); Wasser lässt
Bäume wachsen, deren
Holz verbrennt (Feuer)
und zu Asche wird (Erde),
womit der Kreislauf von
neuem beginnt.Mich
interessierte besonders
der Kreislauf von
Gefühlen: Meditation -
Trauer - Angst -
Ärger - Freude -
(Meditation) usw. Ich
dachte mir, dass dieser
Kreislauf eine
wirkungsvolle emotionale
Reise“ durch ein
Musikstück darstellen
könnte. Folglich
besteht Evolution
aus fünf gleichen
Abschnitten, die diesen
Kreislauf der Gefühle
grob nachzeichnen. Ich
habe versucht, die Musik
organisch wachsen zu
lassen mit möglichst
wenig Wiederholungen.
Jeder Satz entwickelt
sich aus den Elementen
vom Ende des
vorhergehenden Satzes und
das Material der
Eröffnung vollendet am
Schluss des Werkes den
Kreis.

The famous
monolith Ayers Rock (also
called Uluru) is the only
true attraction in the
Northern Territory of
Australia. This colossal
red rock lies in the
middle of a desert plain.
At dusk, a beautiful
spectacle develops as the
setting sun envelops the
rock in rose-red hues.
There are tourists who
climb the rock, while
this is a taboo according
to the indigenous
religion of the
Aboriginals. Besides, the
climb is very strenuous.
A walk around the rock is
also an unforgettable
experience.During a
journey through
Australia, Henk Hogestein
was inspired by this
rock; he composed this
robust rock number to
cherish the memory of
it.
De beroemde
monoliet Ayers Rock (ook
wel Uluru genoemd) is de
enige echte trekpleister
in het Noordelijk
Territorium van
Australië. Deze
kolossale rode rots ligt
midden in een
woestijnvlakte. Bij het
vallen van de avond
ontvouwt zicheen prachtig
schouwspel als de
ondergaande zon het
geheel in rozerode tinten
hult. Henk Hogestein werd
tijdens een reis door
Australië ge nspireerd
door deze rots, hij
componeerde dit stevige
rocknummer ter
herinnering.
Ayers
Rock ist wohl die
größte Attraktion
im Norden Australiens.
Der riesige rote
Felsbrocken ragt mitten
in der Wüste auf und
bietet zu Sonnenauf- und
Untergang ein
großartiges
Schauspiel. Touristen
nutzen den Berg gerne zum
Klettern, für die
Aborigines, die
Ureinwohner Australiens
ist er jedoch ein
heiliger Ort und damit
tabu. Henk Hogestein
setzte seine
persönlichen
Eindrücke von diesem
besonderen Ort in diese
rockige Nummer um.

There are all
sorts of marches: fast
and slow, solemn and
energetic, military and
civil, procession and
funeral. Orion is a
so-called ‘slow
march’. However
the moderate tempo does
not make a passive or
heavy impression. On the
contrary, this march
contains natural optimism
and spontaneity. The
persistant
‘pulse’
gives this majestic march
a noble character
Orion ist
zwar ein langsamer
Marsch, sein getragenes
Tempo wirkt aber
keineswegs passiv oder
schwerfällig, vielmehr
strahlt er natürlichen
Optimismus und
Spontaneität aus. Die
eher einfach gehaltene
Komposition ist
vielseitig einsetzbar und
soinstrumentiert, dass
sie auch von kleineren
Formationen ohne
nennenswerte
Veränderung im
Gesamtklang gespielt
werden kann. Der fast
durchgehend rhythmische
Puls des Schlagzeugs
verleiht dem
majesÂtätischen
Marsch das gewisse Etwas.
