Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version.

At the beginning of the 1970s they entered the music business, where they proved to have a mastery of many styles - including rhythm and blues, jazz, and country. However, the Pointer Sisters acquired international fame at the beginning of the eighties with their soul-like pop music. A great hit was the up-tempo number Iâ??m So Excited, which is still a success on every dance floor. This sparkling arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars certainly provides the excitement that is suggested in the title.

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

Ze vertrokken vanuit Louisville, Kentucky in mei 1804. Ze slaagden er niet alleen in om de Grote Oceaan te bereiken doorvijandig gebied, maar ze vonden ook hun weg terug - in drie jaar! Het werk beschrijft deze reis niet, maar geeft de componist de mogelijkheid om deze geweldige prestatie te memoreren.

L’acquisition de ces terres permet aux États-Unis de doubler la superficie de leur territoire de l’époque. Meriwether Lewis et William Clark sont alors mandatés par le président Thomas Jefferson, pour cartographier les sources du Missouri et tracer une voie vers le Pacifique. Parti de Louisville dans le Kentucky, en mai 1804, le corps expéditionnaire (‘Corps of Discovery’) traverse d’interminables territoires hostiles, réussit atteindre le Pacifique et rentre au terme d’un périple de deux ans ! Cette composition ne fait pas le récit du voyage, mais permet au compositeur decommémorer les deux cents ans de cette fabuleuse expédition.

L’allora presidente Thomas Jefferson incaricò Meriwether Lewis e William Clark di cartografare le sorgenti del fiume Missouri e tracciare la strada verso il Pacifico. Partita da Louisville (Kentucky), nel maggio del 1804, la spedizione attraversò interminabili territori ostili, riuscendo a raggiungere il Pacifico per poi tornare alla base di partenza al termine di un periplo durato due anni. Questo brano non è un racconto del viaggio, ma permette al compositoredi commemorare i duecento anni di questa favolosa spedizione.

The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost creates will keep the audience engaged through to the very last note!

Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines.

Voor Music for a Solemnity liet Jan de Haan zich enerzijds inspireren door de eeuwenoude traditie in de Drentse stad Hoogeveen om met trommels tot de kerkgang op te roepen en anderzijds door de muziek van de succesvolle Amerikaansecomponist John Williams. Deze bijzondere combinatie resulteerde in een feestelijk werk met ritmische patronen en melodische lijnen die getuigen van respect voor Williams’ oeuvre.

Zu Music for a Solemnity ließ sich der Komponist einerseits vom alten Brauch der niederländischen Stadt Hoogeveen, mit Trommeln zum Kirchgang zu rufen, und andererseits von der Musik von John Williams inspirieren. Diese ungewöhnliche Kombination mündete in ein festliches Werk, in welchem sich alte Tradition in schönster Weise mit modernen Rhythmen und melodischen Linien vereinen.

Il y a quatre siècles, l’église de la ville d’Hoogeveen aux Pays-Bas n’avait pas de carillon. Les fidèles décidèrent de se rassembler pour le culte dominical au son d’un tambour. Aujourd’hui, Hoogeveen possède plusieurs carillons mais continue d’honorer cette tradition ancienne. Music for a Solemnity (Musique pour une occasion solennelle) est une oeuvre festive en hommage au tambour d’Hoogeveen. Les lignes mélodiques et les motifs rythmiques sont inspirés de la musique du célèbre compositeur américain John Williams qui Jan de Haan voue une grande admiration.

Una composizione che riprende le vicende del villaggio olandese di Hoogeveen nel XVII secolo. Dato che la chiesa non aveva un campanile, fu deciso di utilizzare un tamburino per chiamare i cittadini a messa. Benché oggi la cittadina sia ricca di campane, Hoogeveen onora questa antica tradizione del tamburino. Music for a Solemnity è un brano festivo ispirato dal tamburino da un lato, ma anche dalla musica di John Williams, le cui linee melodiche e la scrittura ritmica influenzano da sempre Jan de Haan.
