Isaac
Watts (1674 –1748) was
born in Southampton,
England and was brought
up in the home of a
committed religious
Nonconformist; his
father, also Isaac Watts
had been incarcerated
twice for his views.
Watts could not attend
Oxford or Cambridge
because of being a
Noncomformist and because
these universities were
restricted to Anglicans,
instead attending the
Dissenting Academy at
Stoke Newington in 1690.
Watts lived at Abney Hall
in Stoke Newington until
his death in 1748; he was
buried in Bunhill Fields.
He left an extensive
legacy of hymns,
treatises, educational
works, and essays. His
work was influential
amongst Nonconformist
independents and
religious revivalists of
the 18th century by
contributing to English
hymnody with new poetry
to be used in worship.
The older tradition was
based on the poetry of
the Bible which was
developed from the
teachings of the
16th-century Reformation
leader John Calvin.
Watts’ introduction of
extra-Biblical poetry
opened up a new era of
Protestant hymnody with
other poets following in
his path. Many of
Watts’ hymns are
included in the
Christadelphian Hymnal,
the Episcopal Church’s
Hymnal 1982, Evangelical
Lutheran Worship, the
Baptist Hymnal, the
Presbyterian Trinity
Hymnal, and the Methodist
Hymns and Psalms. Many of
his texts are also used
in the American Hymnal
and The Sacred Harp.
Several of his hymns are
used in the hymnals of
the Church of Christ,
Scientist and The Church
of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints. Of the
more that 600 tunes in
the Sacred Harp, 149 of
them have words by Isaac
Watts. Similarly, of the
180 tunes in the Missouri
Harmony 2005 Edition,
Isaac Watts is credited
with the words for 75 of
them. The majority of
these words come from
Watts monumental Psalms
and Hymns, first
published in 1707.

Latin. Psalms 47 from the
Bible.
Psalm 47
was commissioned by
the Sigma Alpha Iota
Chapter of Hardin Simmons
University (Abilene,
Texas), Suzanne Watts,
conductor, back in 1978.
I was a graduate student
at the time, and the
premiere was a great
success. Consequently,
the work has received
many performances since
that time; however, it
remained unpublished
until now. In a modified
tripartite structure, the
psalmist uses the
imperative verb tense as
a command to the people:
(you clap), (you shout),
(you sing) to exemplify
that praise and joy
should be public,
intelligent, cheerful,
and constant. The
psalmist admonishes that
praise and joy are
visual, aural, palpable,
and most definitely
contagious. The
contrasting slow section
with a soprano solo
should be like an
accompanied arioso, where
the soloist is supported
by lush, major/minor
seventh chords in
inversion (accompanied
recitative). The soloist
actually becomes the
narrator in this section,
the preacher or deliverer
of the news that the
people will be protected,
sustained and blessed.
The rapid tempo of the
A-section returns and the
staggered entrances in
the last section/coda
indicate the ecstasy
knowing that belief can
manifest itself in
individualized,
energized, emotional
responses that can change
the world. Rise up and
claim the power of
JOY!. Psalm 47A
was commissioned by
the Sigma Alpha Iota
Chapter of Hardin Simmons

conductor, back in 1978.

Text by Isaac

“At
the Cross†contains
the very rich texts of
Isaac Watts and Ralph
Hudson. My desire is to
treat each verse with
utmost respect by
highlighting—throu
gh music—the
suffering, shame, hope,
beauty, and glory of the
cross. The cross embodies
all of these attributes.
You will notice there is
a somberness that begins
at m. 84, mirroring the
darkness that ensued
while Christ hung on the
cross (Mark 15:33). A
“darkerâ€
sound from the altos is
encouraged. This is the
turning point in the
song, preparing the
singers for the response
to such a sacrifice.
Although the text speaks
of grief and debt
(starting at m. 93), one
can see the hope that
builds, with the
realization that complete
surrender is the only
response to such a
sacrifice. Much thought
and energy (under
control) should be
expended to aid this
verse in building to the
climactic point of the
song, when hope is found
in the cross and the
burden has been
lifted.

Alas! And Did My Savior
Bleed, with the tune
