Skip James was one
of the most influential
early Bluesmen, but his
importance as a stylist
remained undiscovered
until he was brought out
of a long retirement by
the Folk/Blues revival of
the early 1960â??s. Born
in 1902 and raised in
Bentonia, Nehemiah Curtis
James was brought up in a
religious family: his
father was a bootlegger
who reformed and became a
Baptist preacher. Skip
learned piano in school
but picked up guitar from
his friend Henry Stuckey.
In 1931 Skip was picked
up by a scout for
Paramount Records and he
cut 26 tracks, of which
18 were released, in a
two day session at their
Grafton, Wisconsin
studios. These recordings
presented a unique and
haunting genius that
influenced legendary
bluesmen as Robert
Johnson, Kansas Joe McCoy
and Johnny Temple. But
the recordings sold
poorly, having been
released during the Great
Depression, and he
drifted into
obscurity.
<
span style=font-family:
Arial;> We have included
as online downloads
Skipâ??s 1931
recordings. The crackling
sound of these rare
recordings cannot obscure
the brilliance of this
seminal Blues
master.
After over 30
yearâ??s retirement from
music, Skip was
rediscovered by Blues
enthusiasts Bill Barth,
John Fahey and Henry
Vestine. They persuaded
Newport Folk Festival in
1964, where his
renditions of his old
songs were still powerful
and moving. His
performances as well as
his old and new
recordings influenced a
generation of new
musicians: Eric Clapton,
Alan Wilson of Canned
Heat, Cream, Deep Purple,
Chris Thomas King, Alvin
Youngblood Hart, Derek
Trucks, Beck, Big Sugar,
John Martyn, Lucinda
Williams and Rory Block
to name a
few.
Books on
legendary Blues musicians
written by white
musicologists tend to
offer a subjective
perspective on how the
artists felt, thought or
reacted. A tainted
picture is captured that
has more to do with the
writerâ??s social and
musical experiences. This
autobiography is
different. The words,
thoughts and feelings
come directly from the
artistâ??s lips. This is
the story of Nehemiah
â??Skipâ? James told
by Nehemiah â??Skipâ?
James.

A
sinister legend hangs
over the Borgia family, a
legend of corruption,
abuse of power, orgies,
sex and murder. These
rumors proliferated
especially during the
papacy of Alexander VI, a
descendant of the family,
who was even called the
Antichrist. On his death,
contemporary witnesses
reported that the devil
himself prowled around
the death chamber and a
black dog run along the
corridors of the Vatican
as his emissary. One
might say that this
Borgia pope, who ruled
together with his family
with the greatest
brutality, became
demonized.
Unscrupulousness,
poison-toting, incest and
other malice are to this
day the hallmarks of this
pontiff. 2. NEPOTISM
Rodrigo Borgia was
elected Pope on August
11, 1492. From the very
start, the new pope was
prepared to use any means
to eliminate his
opponents, either through
the infamous âBorgia
poisonâ or by
excommunication and
execution. His son
Cesare, who wanted little
to do with the church,
was appointed cardinal
against his will.
Alessandro Farnese, broth
of Giulia Farnese, the
Pope's mistress, also
became a cardinal.
Numerous Spaniards were
brought into the country
and were appointed to
ecclesiastical posts.
This infuriated the
opponents of Alexander
VI. The Dominican
Girolamo Savonarola from
Florence demanded the
removal of the Pope. He
was tortured and banned.
Giuliano della Rovere
wanted to convene
councils to depose the
Pope, which Alexander
managed to prevent
through artful political
maneuverings. Through
great brutality, brillian
political skill and power
games, this pope was able
to achieve his goal of
leaving for his children
a great legacy. Alexander
VI constantly changed his
allies and always acted
unscrupulously to improve
his financial situation
and expand his sphere of
influence. At the centre
of the second movement of
this work is the medieval
hymn Dies Irae (Day of
Wrath), which acts as a
warning in the background
condemning the Pope's
actions.

in the Irish countryside.
The 12-line poem
expresses a
city-dweller's longing
for the simple, tranquil
life of Innisfree.
Includes proven
part-singing
strategies---the tune
first appears in unison,
then becomes a canon; a
peaceful bridge passes
the melody through lower
voice parts, while others
sing sweet counterlines;
and a modulation leads to
full triadic harmony.

Chen
Yi’s most
performed and most
beloved choral music is a
series of 10 Chinese folk
songs adapted for
S.A.T.B. Chorus
(published in 3 volumes:
312-41731, 312-41732,
312-41733). This special
version is a setting of
the familiar collection,
adapted for
children’s chorus
and
strings. Remembering
when I studied
composition in the
Central Conservatory of
Music in Beijing, I
learned to sing hundreds
of Chinese folk songs
collected from more than
twenty provinces and
fifty ethnic groups, and
went to countryside to
collect original folk
music every year. I
got to know that the folk
songs are a mirror of
people’s daily
lives, their thoughts and
sentiments, local customs
and manners. They are
sung in regional dialects
and use the idioms of
everyday speech with
their particular
intonations, accents and
cadences. This
correlation between
speech and music
distinguishes folk songs
of one region from
another. I learned
all songs by heart and
sang them back in the
exams every week.Â
They melted in my blood
and became my natural
music language. The
more I walk into the
music life,the more I
treasure the rich culture
I have learned from my
homeland. When I
became the
Composer-in-Residence of
Chanticleer and was
invited to write the
first work for its
concert program, as well
as another version for
its
Singing-In-The-Schools
program, I decided to
introduce A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs to my
American audiences, and
add a new flavor to
Chanticleer’srich
repertoire. The work
includes ten folk songs,
taken from eight
provinces (Anhui,
Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi,
Taiwan, Sinkiang, Jiangsu
and Guizhou) and five
ethnic groups (Han,
Hasake, Uighur, Miao and
Yi). I arranged them
for choirs (men’s
or children’s
chorus) with various
combinations in voices,
to be sung mostly in
Chinese, some in
English.  From the
mysterious mountain songs
originally sung in the
open air with high and
long notes that can carry
over great distances, the
sweet and delicate
melodies of young love
compared with nature, the
humorous antiphony by
little children, and the
lively dancing tune by
villagers, you may get an
idea of various music
styles in Chinese folk
songs according to
geographic, ethnic and
linguistic differences,
and appreciate the beauty
of the Chinese folk
music. The pure choir
sound and the
sophisticated singing by
Chanticleer, in terms of
pitches, language and
musical expressions,
really attract and
inspire me to create some
more new works in the
years to come. In
thisedition of A Set of
Chinese Folk Songs for
standard SATB mixed choir
(with piano rehearsal
score), I divided these
ten songs into three
volumes. They are
Fengyang Song, The
Flowing Stream, Guessing,
Thinking of My Darling,
Mayila, Jasmine Flower,
Riding on a Mule,
Awariguli, Diu Diu Deng,
andMountain Song and
Dancing Tune.—Chen

The 1712
Overture stands out in
P.D.Q. Bach's oeuvre for
two reasons, among
others: it is by far the
most programmatic
instrumental piece among
those by the minimeister
of Wein-am-Rhein so far
unearthed, and 2) its
discovery has led to a
revelation about the
composer's father, Johann
Sebastian Bach, that has
exploded like a bombshell
on the usually serene
musicological landscape.
The overture is based on
an anecdote told to
P.D.Q. Bach by a cousin,
Peter Ulrich. Since P.U.
Bach lived in Dudeldorf,
only a few miles down the
road from Wein-am-Rhein,
he was P.D.Q.'s closest
relative, and he was, in
fact, one of the few
members of the family who
was on speaking terms
with P.D.Q. The story,
related to P.D.Q.
(fortunately for us
posterity types) in a
letter, may be summarized
thus: The town of
Dudeldorf was founded by
two brothers, Rudi and
Dieter Dudel, early in
the 18th century. Rudi
remained mayor of the
newborn burg for the rest
of his long life, but
Dieter had a dream of
starting a musicians'
colony, an entire city
devoted to music, which
dream, he finally
decided, could be
realized only in the New
World. In 1712, he and
several other bagpipers
sailed to Boston, never
to return to Germany.
(Henceforth, Rudi became
known as der deutscher
Dudel and Dieter as the
Yankee Dudel).
Unfortunately, the head
of the Boston Musicians'
Guild had gotten wind of
Dudel's plans, and
Wilhelm Wiesel (pron.
VEE-zle), known none too
affectionately around
town as Wiesel the
Weasel, was not about to
share what few gigs there
were in colonial America
with more foreigners and
outside agitators. He and
his cronies were on hand
to meet Dudel's boat when
it pulled into Boston
Harbor; they intended to
prevent the newcomers'
disembarkation, but Dudel
and his companions
managed to escape to the
other side of the bay in
a dinghy, landing with
just enough time to rent
a carriage and horses
before hearing the sound
of The Weasel and his
men, who had had to come
around the long way. The
Germans headed West, with
the Bostonians in furious
pursuit. soon the city
had been left far behind,
and by midnight so had
the pursuers; Dieter
Dudel decided that it was
safe for him and his men
to stop and sleep until
daybreak. When they
awoke, they found that
they were in a beautiful
landscape of low,
forested mountains and
pleasant fields, warmed
by the brilliant morning
sun and serenaded by an
entrancing variety of
birds. Here, Dudel
thought, her is where I
will build my colony. The
immigrants continued down
the road at a leisurely
pace until they came upon
a little church, all by
itself in the
countryside, from which
there suddenly emanated
the sounds of a pipe
organ. At this point, the
temptation to quote from
P.U. Bach's letter to
P.D.Q. cannot be
resisted: They went
inside and, after
listening to the glorious
music for a while,
introduced themselves to
the organist. And who do
you think it was? Are you
ready for this -- it was
your old man! Hey, no
kidding -- you know, I'm
sure, that your father
was the guy to get when
it came to testing new
organs, and whoever had
that one in Massachusetts
built offered old
Sebastian a tidy sum to
go over there and check
it out. The unexpected
meeting with J.S. Bach
and his sponsors was
interrupted by the sound
of horse hooves, as the
dreaded Wiesel and his
men thundered on to the
scene. They had been
riding all night,
however, and they were no
spring chickens to start
with, and as soon as they
reached the church they
all dropped, exhausted,
to the ground. The elated
Germans rang the church
bells and offered to buy
everyone a beer at the
nearest tavern. There
they were taught, and
joined in singing, what
might be called the
national anthem of the
New World. The melody of
this pre-revolutionary
patriotic song is still
remembered (P.D.Q. Bach
quotes it, in the bass
instruments, near the end
of the overture), but is
words are now all but
forgotten: Freedom, of
thee we sing, Freedom
e'er is our goal; Death
to the English King, Long
live Rock and Ross. The
striking paucity of
biographical references
to Johann Sebastian Bah
during the year 1712 can
now be explained: he was
abroad for a significant
part of that year,
testing organs in the
British Colonies. That
this revelation has not
been accepted as fact by
the musicological
establishment is no
surprise, since it means
that a lot of books would
have to be rewritten. The
members of that
establishment haven't
even accepted the
existence of P.D.Q. Bach,
one of whose major works
the 1712 Overture
certainly is. It is also
a work that shows
Tchaikowsky up as the
shameless plagiarizer
that some of us have
always known he was. The
discovery of this awesome
opus was made possible by
a Boston Pops Centennial
Research Commission; the
first modern performance
took place at the opening
concert of the 100th
anniversary season of
that orchestra, under the
exciting but authentic
direction of John
Williams.

(1930-2011) arranged two
verses for mixed choir
from Sándor

exercises, Himfy Stanzas.
Like a choral rhapsody,
this two-movement work,
Metropolis, juxtaposes
the idyll of the night
and the hustle and bustle
of early morning workers.
The title Metropolis
appears first as a
counterpoint to the peace
of the countryside, then
as a home for work,
factories, and a vibrant
affirmation of life. Both
movements share the
effective use of the

the prominent use of

Larger choirs will indeed
