Having
been invited several
times onto the jury of
the prestigious
Certamen Tarrega
in Benicasim, I thought I
would involve a few
composers in a gift to
the father of the modern
guitar. So I asked the
composers to write a
Prelude of the kind that
Tarrega wrote and which
count among his most
significant
compositions. These
Preludes for Tarrega, all
written between August
and November 2015, are
very different from each
other. The common
feature, however, between
these and the Preludes by
Tarrega is their brevity,
an average level of
performance difficulty
and guaranteed easy
listening, even when
written in a non-tonal
language (like the
meditative and melancholy
piece by Emilio Calandin
and the one by Marco
Smaili, with its
Impressionistic feel
reminding one of
Tarrega's most famous
pupil, Miguel
Llobet). In some
Preludes (the ones by
Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto
Tagliamacco, Claudia
Montero) the reference to
Lagrima, one of
Tarrega's most famous
Preludes, is evident in
form, title and some
citations. Ugoletti and
Tagliamacco work well and
expressively on harmony
and counterpoint, while
the Argentinian Claudia
Montero links Tarrega to
a heartbreaking Buenos
Aires... In Alessandro
Spazzoli there is rather
more a connection with
Tarrega's sense of melody
and deep simplicity,
while Marco Reghezza
remembers ironically what
was brewing in European
music when Tarrega was
alive: in fact, his
Como Preludio goes
across the 24 keys - and
even a reference to
Wagner's Tristan
raises its head... I
am delighted for this
volume to come out at the
time of the fiftieth
edition of the Certamen
Tarrega. (Piero

a number of decades, and

The Welshman scored his
first success in 1965,

Unusual, a song that was
a worldwide hit. Stefan

Mosè
in Egitto (1818) is the
fourth of the nine opere
serie that Rossini
composed for Naples
between 1815 and 1822. As
his letters to his mother
show, Rossini was very
proud of this opera,
considering it an
especially fine
achievement that might
appeal more to posterity
than to the audiences of
his day. In fact, it
proved to be one of his
most frequently performed
opere serie. The present
reduction for voice and
piano, in two volumes,
derives from the critical
edition of the score,
published by Fondazione
Rossini Pesaro in
collaboration with Casa
Ricordi by Charles S.
Brauner: the edition is
based mainly on the
autograph score now
housed in the
Bibliothèque
nationale de France in
Paris. This autograph
score is complete but it
is not completely
autograph and many
sections have offered
some problems for the
reconstruction of the
text: the recitative in
Act I and the Aria
Mosè in Act II
arenot by Rossini, the
first five recitatives in
Act II are not in
Rossini's hand and may or
may not be by Rossini,
also not in Rossini's
hand is the Aria Amaltea,
although undoubtedly by
Rossini because borrowed
from his earlier opera
Ciro in Babilonia. The
Preface and the Critical
Commentary offer for the
first time some valid
tools to reconstruct the
entire history of the
opera, since the first
performance in Naples
(1818, 1819) to the
Parisian ones (1822 -
1840). In particular in
the appendices are
included the original
Aria Faraone which,
composed by Michele
Carafa for the first two
productions of the opera
in Naples in 1818 and
1819, was later replaced
by the Aria Faraone
Rossini himself composed
in 1820 and, in Appendix
II, the new ending of the
recitative following
Duetto N. 3 which Rossini
composed for one of the
Parisian performances,
after 1822.

The Golden
Age is a programmatic
composition in four
movements. I
Overture For the
Netherlands, the
seventeenth century was a
period of great
flourishing in the fields
of economy, culture and
politics; thus it is
called the Golden Age.
Overseas trade boomed,
and the Dutch East India
Company (known as the VOC
by the Dutch) was founded
and expanded to become a
powerful -and, at the
time - modern enterprise.
II ¡Adiós
españoles!(Farewel
l, Spaniards!) In 1567,
the Spanish army invaded,
led by the Duke of Alva.
There was a fierce
resistance against the
Spanish tyranny; toward
the end of the sixteenth
century, the Dutch
proclaimed theRepublic.
However, the Spanish
continued the war. Only
with the Treaty of
Münster in 1648 did
the Dutch get their much
sought-after
independence. This was
also the end of the
Eighty Years’ War.
III Rembrandt’s
Night WatchThe field
of culture, particularly
literature, painting,
sculpture, architecture,
the art of printing, and
cartography developed
fast. It was in the
Golden Age that the
celebrated painter
Rembrandt van Rijn
created his famous Night
Watch. IV The
Admiral Overseas
trade entailed the
colonization of large
areas in Asia, from where
precious products that
yielded lots of money
were brought in.
Surrounding countries
were also involved in
such practices.
Colonizers poached on
each other’s
territories in the
literal and figurative
sense - in this context
the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars
are legendary. The fourth
movement starts with the
English patriotic song
Rule Britannia, after
which the Dutch Admiral
Michiel de Ruyter makes
the English change their
tune; one can even hear
the roaring of cannons.
When the smoke of battle
has cleared, a small
fragment of a Dutch song
about Michiel de Ruyter
appears, followed by a
fitting closing.
