Confident in
its message yet humble of
heart, this text speaks
to our reliance on
Calvary's cross and
reminds us of the grace
that is at the heart of
our faith. The
beautifully contoured
tune is written in a
gracious Celtic hymn
style and is given
nobility by dotted
rhythms that punctuate
the powerful text. The
effective piano chords of
the accompaniment contain
many impressionistic
color tones, giving the
piece a modern
sensibility. Strong!

A
Basque Carol (also known
as Gabriel's Message)
originated from the 13th
or 14th century. This
brilliantly crafted tune
is at once hauntingly
beautiful, yet warm and
joyous. The lasting power
of this song is in the
craftsmanship of the
melody. Its contours are
complex and skillful, yet
incredibly simple to
sing. A Basque Carol's
popularity can also be
attributed to it's
elegant translation into
English by Sabine
Baring-Gould. While
translations often feel
blunt or coarse, this one
is especially poetic (his
wings as drifted snow,
his eyes as flame). In
this orchestration, a
flowing, cinematic style
is combined with rich,
thickly-textured string
voicings inspired by
composer Ralph Vaughn
Williams. This graceful
arrangement features an
obbligato line on solo
recorder (optional solo
flute or violin). It may
be performed by orchestra
and soloist alone, or
with soprano and alto
choir (or S/A soloists).
There is even a moment
quoted from another
favorite holiday carol,
Jesu Bambino. A lovely
addition to your next

BJ
Brooks' setting of this
well-known Robert Frost
text for SA voices and
piano, examines the
meaning of the text and
its implications through
text painting and within
the contour of the
melodic phrases. Two
roads of tonal and
neo-tonal concepts are at
play between the vocal
melody and the undulating
accompaniment. New to the
Carl Fischer choral
catalog, Brooks'
thought-provoking and
musically interesting
piece is a must-sing for
any women's choir.

A new edition
of this early Martin hymn
resetting! In this
version, the key has been
lowered and the rhythms
adjusted to reflect a
more traditional approach
to the text, refining the
anthem for reverence and
worship. The contours of
the melody convey longing
and repentance while the
B section weaves gentle
counterpoint into a sonic
tapestry of beauty. An
approachable yet
effective option for Holy
Week or services of
contemplation. Superb!

to the fictional world of
legends, myths and fairy
tales. The
introduction to the first
part (The Castle)
describes the majestic
contours of the sceneof
action. Its
instrumentation (horns)
immediately makes you
imagine being in Medieval
spheres. The addition
of trenchant copper
instruments even gives
the part a heroic tinge.
After entering through
the gate, a lot of hustle
and bustle appearsto be
going on in the
courtyard. Pages, squires
and soldiers are busy
attending to their arms.
Beer is being brewed,
flax is being spun,
cattle are being tended
and some craftsmen from
neighbouring villages are
busily at work. In
the upperchamber of the
round tower lives an old
man (The Old Wizard). He
hardly ever comes out,
and nobody knows exactly
what he is doing. It is
said that he is engaged
in wizardry and magic. It
is all very
mysterious. There are
also festivities, some
ofthem sober, others
exuberant. The
wedding in the third part
is celebrated in a grand
manner. With a flourish
of trumpets, the bride
makes her entrance at the
hand of her father.
Afterwards, at the party
there is dancing to the
music played byminstrels
