Als
Johannes Brahms im Jahre
1876 seine 1. Sinfonie
der Offentlichkeit
vorstellte, war dies ein
lang erwartetes Ereignis.
Zwar war der Komponist
schon eine geraume Zeit
beruhmt und hatte sich in
fast allen musikalischen
Gattungen hervorgetan: er
hatte Klaviersonaten,
Lieder, Konzerte sowie
Orchester- und Chorwerke
(u.a. das Deutsche
Requiem) vorgelegt und
mit drei
Streichquartetten
Beitrage zu einer Gattung
geliefert, die seit
Beethovens spaten
Quartetten als
kunstvollste und intimste
musikalische Gattung
uberhaupt galt. Nur eine
Sinfonie hatte er noch
nicht komponiert, denn er
gehorte zu den
Komponisten, denen die
Schwierigkeit bewusst
war, mit einem
sinfonischen Werk
gegenuber dem
Beethovenschen Erbe
bestehen zu
konnen.Giselher Schubert
schildert diese Umstande
in diesem Buch und
verdeutlicht, dass ein
selbstkritischer
Komponist, wie es Brahms
ausgepragt war, sich so
lange Zeit schwer tun
musste, bis er glaubte,
den Erwartungen von
Freunden und Fachleuten
entsprechen zu konnen. Er
beschreibt neben der
Entstehungsgeschichte
dieser Sinfonie, der
schon bald der Beiname
die Zehnte (Beethovens)
gegeben wurde, die
Quellenlage, gibt
kommentierend die
Reaktionen auf die ersten
Auffuhrungen wieder und
stellt Betrachtungen an
zu einer Analyse des
Werkes. Anregungen zur
weiteren Beschaftigung
mit dieser Sinfonie geben
in einer Auswahl
Literaturverzeichnis und
eine Diskographie. Anhand
der vollstandig
wiedergegebenen Partitur
kann der Leser den
Notentext beim Horen
verfolgen und die
analytischen Kommentare
nachvollziehen.

The Famous
One in the Leading
EditionBeethoven spent a
relatively long time on
his 5th Symphony. Thus,
first sketches can
already be found from as
early as 1804, four years
before the work was
premiered in Vienna in
December 1808. Not only
impressive is its
striking opening theme,
letting everyone know
immediately that this is
Beethoven being played,
but also its nickname
symphony of fate. Nothing
in the sources prefigures
the much-cited fate,
musically knocking here
at the door. The
autograph of the score
and the set of parts
prepared from it,
including Beethoven's
revisions, serve as the
main sources of this
Urtext edition, together
with the missing copy of
the score, now extant
only incomplete in
photographs, and the
original edition of the
parts authorized by
Beethoven. The new
performance material is

Beethoven
did not work continuously
on this symphony and
interrupted his work a
couple of times. As the
sketches show, he
presumably wrote down
first ideas in the autumn
of 1800.No other
autograph material has
survived. As Ferdinand
Ries, a pupil of
Beethoven, bitterly
reports, Beethoven gave
him the autograph, but it
was unfortunately stolen
by a friend, out of pure
friendship. In April
1803, the composition was
premiered publicly,
together with the first
symphony and the third
piano concerto with
Beethoven himself as
soloist. Although
Beethoven's first two
symphonies are still
influenced by Haydn and
Mozart, novelties can
already be discovered.
The second symphony
starts breaking away from
traditional forms and
lets us surmise the
monumentality of
Beethoven's innovation.
The editor, Armin Raab,
critically illuminates
the transmission of the
work and its sources. He
also clears up a wide
spread belief in older
literature, that this
cheerful work might have
been composed parallel to
the Heiligenstadter
Testament. The practical
performance material by
Breitkopf & Hartel is
based on the music text
of the New Beethoven
Complete Edition and
constitutes the
authoritative reading of
Beethoven research.

It was only
shortly after the 5th
Symphony that Beethoven
completed the Pastoral
Symphony. The two formed
a complementary work
pair, consigned together
to a patron in June 1808,
publicly premiered in
Vienna in December 1808,
and published by
Breitkopf & Hartel in the
spring of 1809. During
this period, Beethoven
revised the symphony
several times. Only in
the course of preparing
for publication did
Beethoven send Breitkopf
& Hartel a letter,
together with a list of
corrections, disclosing
the title that he
desired, Pastoral
Symphony or recollections
of country life. More an
expression of feeling
than painting. The
Pastoral with its
tone-painting elements
gives evidence of
Beethoven's closeness to
nature, characterizing in
five movements his
various experiences and
images of nature. Based
on the music text of the
Beethoven Complete
Edition, the new
performance material of
this recently published
edition presents the
current, authoritative
status of Beethoven
research for this
work.

Beethoven
composed the ballet music
“Die Geschöpfe
des Prometheusâ€
during 1800–01,
commissioned by the
ballet master Salvatore
Viganò for
performances with his
Viennese company.
Although the ballet was
initially quite
successful, with almost
thirty continuous
performances, it did not
enjoy a sustained
performance tradition.
Its overture, however,
was a different matter:
considered almost a
symphonic movement in
terms of orchestration,
style and structure, it
was often performed on
its own even during
Beethoven’s
lifetime.
In
general, previous
editions of this overture
relied on the first print
as the main source.
However, the authenticity
of this source cannot be
convincingly proven. For
this new edition,
Beethoven specialist
Jonathan Del Mar
incorporates various
manuscript sources,
including a set of parts
from 1803/4 that has
never been considered
before. In this way,
numerous discrepancies
could be
clarified.

The genesis
of Beethoven's 4th
symphony came at an
extraordinary time for
the composer not only
regarding productivity:
Thus, in 1806 he
composed, among other
things, the 4th piano
concerto, the three
Rasumovsky string
quartets op. 59, the 32
piano variations in c
minor WoO 80, as well as
the violin concerto op.
61. The first performance
of the B-flat-major
symphony occurred in
March 1807 at one of the
two noteworthy
subscription concerts
conducted by Beethoven in
the Palais Lobkowitz in
Vienna. In the course of
time, this
intellectually-stimulatin
g work- so described by
one of the reviewers of
the Allgemeine
musikalische Zeitung -
found ever-increasing
appeal. Throughout the
entire 19th century this
symphony ranked with the
best-loved and most
frequently performed
works; its popularity
spread to England where
the London Philharmonic
Society played it at
least 25 times in the
period between 1813 and
1850.Extant are only a
few drafts of the 4th
symphony. The autograph
served as the main source
for the present edition
edited by Prof. Bathia
Churgin, likewise editor
of the 3rd symphony in
the new Beethoven
Complete Edition.
Consulted as reference
sources were copies of
the score and orchestral
parts as well as the
original edition of the
parts.

The
European Hymn is the hymn
not only of the European
Union but of Europe in a
broader sense. The melody
has been taken from the
Ninth Symphony by Ludwig
van Beethoven from
1823.In the last movement
of this symphony
Beethoven set music to
the 'Ode to Joy' by
Friedrich von Schiller
from 1785. This poem
sprang from Schiller's
idealistic vision of men
who become brothers - a
vision Beethoven shared
with him.In 1972 the
Council of Europe adopted
Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy'
as its anthem. The
well-known conductor
Herbert von Karajan was
commissioned to arrange
three instrumental
versions - for solo
piano, wind orchestra and
symphony orchestra.
Without words, in the
universal language of
music, the anthem is an
expression of the
idealistic values of
freedom, peace and
solidarity which Europe
stands for.In 1985 the
heads of state and
government adopted the
hymn as the EU's official
anthem. It does not
replace the national
anthems of the member
states, but rather
celebrates common values
as well as unity in
diversity.The score of
this offical anthem is
exclusively available
from the Schott
publishing house.

The Eroica
according to the Complete
EditionExploring the
Eroica is the name of the
essay with which the
editor made herself known
back in 1998 and which
contributed decisively to
the research into the
complex transmission.
Written in 1803, the
autograph of the work is
lost today. The title
Sinfonia Eroica is
already found in the
first edition (but only
there as well). The main
source of the edition is
the copy of the score,
which was carefully
examined and emended by
Beethoven, and into which
he made corrections even
after the appearance of
the first printed set of
parts. In addition, the
copies of the parts used
for first performances
(before publication) as
well as the extremely
error-filled first
edition of the
instrumental parts are
also relevant; more so,
however, is another
printed set that
Beethoven personally
revised. Thanks to the
new performance material,
the musical text of the
new Beethoven Complete
Edition can now also be
heard alternatively to
the Breitkopf Urtext
edition by Peter
Hauschild (PB/OB
5233).

Beethovenâ
€™s incidental music
op. 84 was written in
1809 for a performance of
Goethe’s drama
“Egmont†at
the Burgtheater in
Vienna. Numerous
composers of the day
tried their hand at
writing music for the
dramatic material of
Goethe’s tragedy,
several in collaboration
with the author himself.
The overture reflects the
themes of the play
through its expressive
music, and over the last
two hundred years it has
become one of the most
popular works by
Beethoven conceived for
the stage.
For
this new edition,
Beethoven specialist
Jonathan Del Mar draws on
various manuscript
sources including a
handwritten set of parts
which has never been
taken into account
before. Thus, numerous
discrepancies such as
missing notes in the
flute part or unclear
bowing could be clarified
for the first
time.

After the
first sketches had been
put to paper in 1815,
Beethoven only finally
put the finishing touches
to his last completed
symphony in 1824. With
its extended finale in
which soloists and choir
perform, building the
bridge to the symphonic
cantata with their
invocation of fraternity,
it marks a caesura in the
history of the symphony
that echoed long into the
nineteenth century. The
main theme of the ode
“To Joy†by
Friedrich Schiller, set
to music in the final
movement, has become one
of the most popular
melodies in all of
classical music and today
serves as the official
anthem of Europe. Based
on the musical text of
the Beethoven Complete
Edition and furnished
with a new preface, this
recently prepared edition
reflects the latest in
Beethoven scholarship.
Now,in this study
edition, it is available
to everyone at a
reasonable price and in a
handy format.

Despite the
numbering, the overture
Leonore No. 2 was
Beethoven's first effort
to precede his only opera
with an adequate
introduction. It had been
composed last minute and
in between the rehearsals
for the premiere of the
opera Leonore oder Der
Triumph der ehelichen
Liebe (Leonore, or The
Triumph of Marital Love)
on 20 November 1805 at
the Theater an der Wien.
This comprehensive,
programmatic work was met
with incomprehension at
first performances just
like the opera itself.
Beethoven felt compelled
to re-write Leonore
completely and presented
it under its new title
Fidelio. In 1806 he
revised the overture to
such an extent that a
symphonic sonata movement
emerged; with another
incorrect numbering,
Leonore No. 3 has gone
down in music history and
above all it has achieved
a regular place in
concert repertory. And in
order to complete the
confusion: written in
1806/07, only Overture
No. 1 is Beethoven's
chronologically last
effort to write an
overture for Leonore,
before he - many years
later - put an end to
this infinite subject
with the so-called
Fidelio overture for the
third version of the
opera. After all, thanks
to the search after a
dramaturgically
convincing beginning of
the opera, the music
world has been enriched
by four quite different
orchestra scores.The
music text of the present
score is based on Volume
11 of the Supplements to
the Complete Edition. The
performance material of
the Fidelio and Leonore
No. 3 overtures is
available in Breitkopf
Urtext editions..

The
premiere of this work in
December 1813 ranks among
the greatest successes
Beethoven ever celebrated
in public as a composer.
One reviewer wrote at the
time that in its themes
the new symphony was
“so favourable and
easily comprehensible
that every music lover
falls for the powerful
allure of its
beauty.†The
incisiveness of the
themes is fundamentally
related to the basic
ostinato rhythms, which
help shape each
movementÂ’s
distinctive character.
Richard Wagner even
called the composition,
with its ecstatic finale,
an “apotheosis of
the dance.†Based

Sandwiched
between the popular
Symphonies Nos. 7 and 9,
the relatively short
Eighth Symphony finds
itself in a difficult
position even now. Right
after the premiere in
February 1814, one critic
opined that it had made
“no splash.â€
At first glance it makes
recourse to already
outmoded forms and
genres, even reviving a
minuet for the third
movement (in lieu of a
slow movement) after an
Allegretto scherzoso. But
Beethoven engages
intensively with music
history, breaking apart
traditional procedures
and patterns and finding
new, surprising solutions
that make his Eighth a
milestone in symphonic
history. Based on the
musical text of the
Beethoven Complete
Edition and furnished
with a new preface, this
recently prepared edition
reflects the latest in
